Release Date: 2003 | Tracklist

Review Summary: Outkast defy any expectations for this smorgasbord of an album.

The time was 2003. Hip-hop was mostly reduced to the sounds of Joe Budden and Lil' Jon. Until one day, 2 rappers from Atlanta decided to make a double album of epic proportions. Big Boi and Andre 3000, also known as Outkast, decided to enhance their creativity by releasing Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. Big Boi's side, Speakerboxxx, was a very hardcore album with pounding basslines, deep voices, chunky wah-wah guitars, and tight rhythms. Both of the covers for this album sum the album up perfectly. Speakerboxxx shows Big Boi sitting in a very furry chair, wearing some thick soled moccasins. This shows that this is going to be a Southern hip-hop album. The Love Below depicts Andre 3000 holding some kind of gun with pink steam coming out of it. A gun with pink steam? That sounds pretty wussy, but this side is about love. Now, I will get on to the three best tracks. "Bust", "Hey Ya!", and "The Way You Move". These tracks show this album's diversity, as Bust showcases a tight beat, a chorus effect, wah-wah guitars, Big Boi's deep voice, and Killer Mike's "yeti-aggravating" yells. Hey Ya! was overplayed to death in 2004, but the radio doesn't play it anymore. This was far and away the album's most popular song. The Way You Move is a fun song with a smooth bassline. Anyway, this album is diverse like jerk chicken, and you should really pick it up if you don't have it.

The Joe Budden reference is unfair and unfounded. =/

I forgive you. "Pump It Up" was very misleading, after all.

I personally like Andre's side more. Just the sheer experimentation of his music on The Love Below is really awesome to me.

What's up with Big Boi's cover? He's sitting in an Aboriginal chair, clad in moccasins.

you shouldn't talk about the album cover in the review... and 2003 wasn't reduced to joe budden and lil jon.

the second sentence makes it sound like outkast came out of nowhere with this album. they were pretty damn famous even before this album came out.
