Review Summary: Creepy soundtrack to a creepy story

4 of 4 thought this review was well written

Saya no Uta or Song of Saya… the creepiest, most disgusting, morbid thing ever to be created by mankind. This visual novel is mesmerizingly freaky. It took me a while to finally stop looking at it, I’m still not done with it, can’t read a lot of it at once, but I’m hooked. But this is not about the story, as strange and disturbing as it maybe, this is about the soundtrack. Amazingly composed, the Saya no Uta OST is filled with this eerie feeling that fits the story perfectly.

The song “Song of Saya I” is what I consider to be the theme of the whole story, as it is the theme of the monster girl, Saya. The song starts with this mysteries keyboard tone, fallowed by what seems like a little girl singing. About halfway thought the song, this kind of soft screeching noise comes in. “Song of Saya II” is pretty much the same thing with more harsh screeching noise and softer keyboards. Both “Song of Saya I & II” are the most terrific masterpieces on the album.

Most of the other songs on the album can be explained in two ways, soft songs and harsh songs. Soft songs such as “Seek” and “Sin” are mysterious and eerie in sound. They add suspense to story, most of the time having a lot of beeps and low screeches. Some of the other soft songs are more peaceful and relaxing, like “Sabbath” and “Silent Sorrow”. One of the soft songs, “Schizophrenia”, borderlines the harsh songs by using harsh screeches, and an overall harsh sound, but the song is surprisingly soothing and doesn’t give off a terror fill like in songs like “Scream” and “Shapeshift”. “Schizophrenia” is one of the most amazing tracks on the album, as I see it as the music form of the disgusting world the main character, Fuminori, sees in his daily life. An odd ball song in the album is “Savage” it is more like a hard rock song, then the creepy electronicish songs in the rest of the album.

The last two songs on the album are song by a singer named, Kanako Itō. Kanako Itō is a Japanese female singer, famous for her work in video games and anime. Even though I consider her songs probably the two worse songs on the album, they are quite enjoyable. “Song of Saya” is a vocal version of “Song of Saya I & II” even though it changes a lot about the songs, making it not as great as the other two. The other one “Shoes of Glass” is a good song, but I consider it probably one of the worse songs on the album.

This album in its bizarre way, has kept my interest and is one of the reasons why I keep on reading Saya no Uta, even though it creeps the hell out of me. Pure preference is what keeps this album from being a Classic. As superb as I think it is, it doesn’t seem Classic material. But this album and its story will stay in mind for a long long time, mainly because the mental image of seeing Fuminori devouring the organs of his best friend’s girlfriend is permanently burned into my mind along with a few other disturbing scenes. GOD, I hope I never have severe brain injuries now.

Is this just a VN or has it been released as an anime?

And is it similar to Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni?

Someone should do Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo soundtrack reviews.

Haven't heard of this though, guessing it's just a VN because i couldn't find it in a couple of databases.

It's just a VN... if it was an anime I wouldn't watch it, seeing everything, will just be too much.

I finished this game only on good ending so far. Which is weird because that one doesn't have that much of a 'good ending' to me at all, but hell.
I'm a bit sad I haven't continued with the other routes at that point since it's been like what, 1 year ago since I played this? Afraid I'll have to start all over.

About the music, it's pretty atmospheric to say the least. I admit that the scene that used 'Scream' at the end was pretty dark, but most stuff was fine with me. It was a funny feeling to search for the beauty of the story beneath all that fucked up bullshit such as a neighbor killing is his wife and child because he thinks they are monsters, for the love of god.

Shoes of Glass is actually a pretty nice track, in my opinion. I like the mood it gives off after finishing the game.
