Review Summary: Just like hardcore should be.
Coldfront - Demo 2008
Coldfront is a hardcore band from Canberra, Australia. They play very passionate hardcore reminiscent to bands 'Paint It Black' and 'Have Heart'. Just like many other bands in the Australian hardcore scene, they play with a melodic touch.
The demo starts out with the song 'Distance'. 'Distance' starts with a quick drum fill to a very fast 2/4 beat. The vocals come in, which sound like a low throaty yell. After a standard and rather boring hardcore verse, a rather melodic chorus accompanied by one of those hardcore-octaves leads. This is definitely a good saver of the song, if there wasn't this melodic part, the song would be absolutely terrible. That is one factor that really works for Coldfront; their music never gets boring because they always know when to mix things up. The lyrics on the chorus are rather depressing, such as these lines:
"I'm so far from home
I wont make it through..."
Eventually the song breaks down and the mood is as depressing as ever; with the bassist leading the way for the rest of the song, giving the vocalist a break.
'Breakdown' starts with the drummer playing a beat on the toms and snare. Eventually all of the instruments come in, and the tempo increases. The riffs on 'Breakdown' are definitely an improvement from the ones on 'Distance'. Another one of those octave leads come in, making the song a lot more catchy and interesting. The song breaks-down(hehe, get it?), and ends rather melodically. The end part reminds me of something Break Even would have done on their 'Young At Heart' release.
"Demo 2008" is a fairly solid hardcore release, though it has its flaws; some may get annoyed from the vocalists voice, i certainly did. The structures on the songs are both extremely similar as well, which gets annoying. But if you are a fan of melodic hardcore, then i recommend it.
Both of the songs are short, angry, and fun. just like hardcore should be.
