Red Hot Chili Peppers-mothers milk(1989)

the Chili Peppers are:
Antony Keidis-vocals(also known as "antwan the swan")
Flea(michael balzary)-bass
John Frusciante-guitar
chad smith-drums

This album is dedicated to the late Hillel Slovak who died of an accidentle heroin overdose, when hillel died their drummer jack irons left because he couldnt cope with the constant reminder of a lost friend.Antony and Flea recruited john frusciante on guitar and chad smith on drums. Mothers milk is their first album after the loss of jack and hillel, but it is still a great one nonetheless. It may not be as funkier as "uplift mofo party plan" or as raw as "freaky styley" but it still lives up to the chilis standards, even though some hardcore hillel fans dont give this album the credit it deserves.

track analysis

1.Good time boys-starts off with a little bass and guitar intro...the song is obviously about the band and their effect on people...and what they are tryin to accomplish..average song..7/10

2.Higher ground-most probably the most recconisable song on the album, its a cover of an old stevie wonder song,it has an excellent bass intro that is one of fleas best, the chorus is very cacthy and this song is just so good..makes u wanna dance like a mofo.excellent song 10/10

3.Subway to venus-starts with a flea playin the trumpet and it carries on throughout most of the song..has a simple but effective chorus and catchy "space is king or so i sing, subway to venus"..nice simple bass line as well...good song 8/10

4.Magic Johnson-really fast paced song about basket ball..not much to say about it really...quite borin..not very good song 5/10

5.Nobody Weird Like me-starts with a nice slap/pop bass riff..this song is,mistake me if im wrong, about antony keidis the lead singer...."The Freakist show i know/is the show of my own".....rather amusing lyrics..."bless my soul/im a freak of nature/walking totem pole"...teh latter of that line reffers to the totem pole tatoo on his back...good song...8/10

6.Knock Me down- this song is dedicated to hillel i think...has a nice cacthy riff .fleas nice slap/pops are kinda strategically placed...and the chorus is obviously directed at drugs and hilel.."if u see me gettin mighty/if u see me gettin high/knock me down/im not bigger than life"....there is also a nice vocal solo by some black woman at abot 2:48....and it finishes with "its so lonely when u dont even know yourself" repeated until it fades out...beautiful song..9.5/10

7.taste the pain-starts with a mix of vocals and bass blurred together....the bass riff on this is cool....the song is simple but quite catchy..i cant quite tell wether this song is about drugs or a woman..but either way the lyrics are nice and meaningful..good song 8/10

8.stone cold bush-this song is most probably the most funkiest on the album next to higher ground...great bass solo and guitar solo which follow one another..loadsa distortion on the geetar solo.i thnk this song is about a hooker or jus a girl...a great song anyways..with a great catchy chorus "sheeeeeeeeeeessss stooooooooooooonnnneeeee coooooooolllllllddddddd BUSH!"..one of my favs one the album.10/10

9.FIRE!-this song is a jimi hendrix song and it has also been covered by alice cooper and it features on waynes world....this song is speeded up and the geetar solo is executed excellently by hillel ...this is the only song on the album that was recorded with hillel slovak and jack irons..decent.definately chilified!!.7/10

10.Pretty Little Ditty-the albums intrumental..this is my favourite instrumental of alltimes....it sounds like it should be two songs really..and also cazy town stole one of the geetar riffs..Bastards!!this song is qute emotional.and it gives a kinda sad feeling...god damn excellent..10/10

11.Punk Rock Classic-fast paced punk soudin song that takes the piss out of punk bands that try seekin attention by sayin they dont wanna be on mtv when they really do...it has a great solo aswell..with funny lyrics..."put us on mtv/all we really need/beging on our knees/PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!" and then the song finishes with the intro to 'sweet child o mine',,,HA!....great song..8/10

13.Johnny,Kick a hole in the sky-one of chilis best.starts with "star spangled banner" in a funky voice..i think this song is about the native americans.has a good bass intro aslwell..this song is kinda political from the native americans point of view.,....has a great punchy bass line alll the way throuhg and the chorus is really catchy..."wont somebody testify kick a hole right in the sky/testify testify kicka hole right in the sky/slap a liar in his eye kicka hole right in the sky/testify testify kick a hole right in the sky johnny,JOHNNY JOHNNY!"...also one of my favs on the album..10/10

i give this album a 9.9/10 i thnk it is the chilis best...and johns hair was at its best round about this time....he had cool pink long hair..w00t!

Excellent review... I'm not gonna nitpick on grammatical errors or anything, 'cause overall it was very solid, summed up what I like about the album. Mother's Milk is second to both BSSM and Uplift Mofo in my mind, but nonetheless is one of my favorite albums ever.

Highlights... Good Time Boys, Stone Cold Bush, Knock Me Down, Taste The Pain, Johnny Kick A Hole In The Sky, and the Crazy Town-sampled Pretty Little Ditty. Pretty Little Ditty nearly drove me to tears the first time I heard it -- given, I wasn't expecting it, and suicidally depressed -- so it's probably my favorite song off of the whole album.

Johnny Frusciante really shines here, as well... I wish he'd shred a bit more, just for fun, as he shows hints of the ability in the solo to Punk Rock Classic... note the "subtle" rip on Guns'n'Roses at the end, as well, courtesy of the lead riff to Sweet Child O' Mine.

Overall, a very good album. Excellent musicianship, very good songwriting, and a funk/punk/metal fusion much-copied, but rarely surpassed. 7/10?

Good review for the most part, but I got to disagree with you about Magic Johnson. I know its a weird little song but the bass and guitar are so good on this song, it makes it great. IMO atleast.

Actually Freaky Styley was funkier than the Uplift Mofo Party Plan. George Clinton produced F.S. and really funkedified it.

^^ I was gonna correct that, but for some reason I decided not to. Uplift Mofo was overall a better album, though... aside from the covers, Jungle Man, and Blackeyed Blonde, there wasn't a lot of really memorable material on Freaky Styley. Uplift Mofo has only... two songs that I ever skip, heh... very solid, their most punk/metal-influenced.

Besides, Uplift Mofo has Walkin' On Down The Road, the most underrated Chilis cut ever, heheh.

Are you guys kidding...i've got all the chilis albums and i think that mothers milk doesnt come anywhere near to BSSM. And i agree that magic johnson is good.. and was my favourite song on the album for a while.

When they played "Stone Cold Bush" on SNL, it was so awesome. Lots of bass and guitar solo stuff; probably the most amazing display of talent that ever performed on Saturday Night Live, except for maybe Faith No More and Blind Melon. I guess all those early 90s alternative rock bands were awesome on SNL.

How can you be a big Chili Peppers fan and not think Freaky Styley is great? Theres not a bad song on it.

Freaky Styley is my favourite chili peppers record, then BSSM and then One Hot Minute. I own them all though.

There are good songs on Freaky Styley... I love Jungle Man, American Ghost Dance, Blackeyed Blonde, etc., it just doesn't manage to match the metallic funky fury of Uplift Mofo, heh. Plus... Kiedis' vocals are almost painful on quite a few Freaky Styley songs... he picks up a bit more momentum and force circa Uplift Mofo.

WTF are you talking about, what songs is Kiedis painful to listen to? If you want to hear some painful vocals listen to Universally Speaking.

great review, mothers milk is my # fav after bssm (by the way there is only slap on power of equality, and naked in the rain. flea didn't want to be a show off on this album so he slowed down his bass styling from his trade mark fast paced style) magic johnson is a great little song that deserves more credit. i agree that pretty little ditty has the stuff to make you cry coz it's THAT good. the bass solo on stone cold bush is no doubt the best i've heard and it's what inspired me to take up bass (how come no review for "sexy mexican maid"???)

By far mothers milk is my fav. album and BSSM next. I guess the main reason i favor mothers milk is because i model my bass work under flea and i think the album showed his best bass work.

"Good Time Boys" is my favorite track, and favorite RHCP song. Fabulous riff too.

I agree with what you said about Higher Ground. The vid to it is also amazing and fun to watch over and over again. Magic Johnson is not boring! I like that song! And also, in your review, you said nothing about Sexy Mexican Maid, what's up with that? But overall, it's a great album you're right about that one. Not quite the best though.

Album Rating: 3.5

Brilliant album. The guitar work on this is technically John's best. Although BSSM has all the recognisable riffs, this is so funked out and fast it's unbelievable, he was only eighteen when he played all this, listen to it with that in mind.

The only song I don't like is Nobody Weird Like Me, but even that has a time and a place for me.

Chilis Album IMO

1. One Hot Minute

2. BSSM

3. Mother's Milk

4. Califonication

5. Uplift Mofo Party Plan

6. Freaky Styley

7. By The Way

8. RHCP (Pretty good, just not my brand of vodka)
