Cherub Rock- With its slowly building opening, leading to a bombastic arena rocker, its the perfect start to this superb album. This song may be one of thier most radio-friendly tracks. Its absract lyrics are clever yet simple. I really love the guitar solo in this song. 4.5/5
Quiet- If your into a little more hard rocking music, this provides immense satisfaction. The riff gets tiresome, but its awaked by another fantasic guitar solo. Even thoug its probably my least favorite song on siamese dream, its still a good tune. 3.5/5
Today- Also a very popular song on the radio. Catchy opening hook, and fantastic melody. Billys lyrics seem happy and "innocent" in this, but they are acctually very dark. The song has much to do with suicide and such, even though he sings "today is the greatest...day ive ever known" This song has no solos, and barely tops 3 mins, but its insanely addicting. 4/5
Hummer- My favorite from the album. This song has a very emotional feeling to it, and i love to listen to it all the time. Many loud and quiet parts in this song layered under many melodic solos. It has no structure, unlike many other tracks on this album, so it stands out. The cello in this song is absolutely amazing. The song would be nothing without it. My favorite line- "Ask yourself a question, anyone but me, i ain't free" 5/5
Rocket- Another one of my favorites from the album. Interesting riffs, and a wonderful ending. Here is what Billy said about Rocket:
"There's this line from the song 'Rocket', 'Bleed in your own light'. I wanna f
uckin' bleed in my own light, not in Kurt Cobain's, not in Perry Farrell's. I wanna go down in my own f
ucking ship. That's what I'm about." A perfect way to lead into the next song. 5/5
Disarm- After Hummer and Rocket pass by leaving their audio imprint on you, the mood takes a sudden turn with the orchestral and haunting ballad of Disarm. Its a song billy wrote about his parents. Most people cant tell this by the lyrics though. I love the line "Ooh, the years burn." This is acoustic, but live its usually played electric. 5/5
Soma- Disarm leads you into the song Soma. But dont be so quick to call it soft rock though, after a while it turns into a hard rocking crowd pleaser. The guitar solo in this is extrordinary. Billy said "Soma is based on the idea that a love relationship is almost the same as opium: it slowly puts you to sleep, it soothes you, and gives you the illusion of sureness and security." Still, the album has yet to lose its touch. 5/5
Geek USA- Now the white-hot rage of Geek USA quickly rips through your ears. Once called Suicide Kiss* Geek USA has an amazing beat to it near the middle to the end. Its a song with wonderful dynamics. A real trip back to the 1970's style of rock n roll but with a 90's grunge vibe to it. Minor slow interlude to wind the song down, followed by a respectable solo by billy and a pre-outro that tricks you to believeing the song is over when there is still much left. 5/5
Mayonaise- Then Geek USA yields to this wonderful ballad. Much of this song was written by James Iha, but as the control freak billy is, he stuck his nose into it. But billy didnt do anything bad to this song, its amazing. I also love to listen to this song when i am down. A lot of emotion in this song. It has, yet again, an amazing guitar solo by Billy. 5/5
Spaceboy- Now the whole album seems to takes another U-turn as the quiet ballad of Spaceboy comes into play. This was written about Billy's handicapped brother, who he felt was just like him. Also an acoustic song with a nice cello. It does get boring so i gave it a rating of: 3/5
Silverf
uck- Snap your seatbelt in because after the quiet ballads, the loud and powerful Silverf
uck takes over. A long song with a fairly drawn out quiet part in the middle. Played at the end of many pumpkins concerts. Truely an intense song, one of those "Barn Burners" as James calls them. Its much better live though. 4/5
Sweet Sweet- Short quiet song. There isnt much to say about this song. Its acoustic and isn't bad. It has some neat lyrics. I wouldnt consider it a filler. 3/5
Luna- Finally, the album ends on a whisper with Luna. Another peaceful and tranquil song where Billy keeps singing "I'm in love with you...I'm so in love" A decent way to end the album. 4/5
This cd is a must get if you dont have it(imo anyways). You won't be tempted to skip through a single track. Siamese Dream will enrapture you with its sheer perfection. Although future efforts were more ambitious, the Smashing Pumpkins never made an album this flawless again. You can't lose by adding this one to your collection.
Overall- 5/5
