Review Summary: A metalcore gem.

It’s all too common to come upon a conversation amongst metalcore fans and be bored out of your mind. The reason is quite simple and I mean no disrespect to the following metalcore pioneers: “Stop rehashing the same jibber jabber about the top three U.S. metalcore bands Converge, Botch, and Coalesce”. The point I’m driving at is not spiteful in the least that these guys hog the limelight. Metalcore purists sound so ignorant in their rants about who is the dominant band on the scene and completely overlook that their may be a handful of bands carving out their own niche that could spank these bands silly. Becoming too focused on a specific subject will only yield narrow-minded results. Ladies and gentlemen, Conquest:Writhe is your answer if you fall victim to the symptoms presented above.

Before Burst would become the amalgamation of many styles in metal, Conquest:Writhe would establish Burst as a seminal piece in establishing the European metalcore scene. Next to Loss of Innocence, this is Bursts most straight forward album without ever touching on the crammed, stylistic leanings of their last three albums as a band. If metalcore is what you’re expecting, then metalcore is what you get and Burst certainly show the listener how metalcore can have exuberant melodies alongside grinding hardcore pissfests.

While most metalcore falls into two categories, a constant onslaught of sound or sporadic bursts of energy with inconsistent variations in songs, Conquest:Writhe falls into the first description. This actually acts as an asset to the album, making the entire 37 minutes one big consistently amazing performance instead of individual standouts. It’s hard to pick a favourite on here seeing as almost every track contains equal parts speedy, hardcore melodies to jaunting epics. Everything from the insanely harsh delivery of songs such as “Conquest: Writhe” to the haunting melodies of “Misconception” will most definitely spark the interest of listeners who want more out of there metalcore than silly breakdowns. Speaking of breakdowns, there is not one here to be found. Instead, Burst utilizes these opportunities where most metalcore bands would take the easy way out and generically insert an off time rhythm coupled with a redundant chugga-chug riff. The interludes/ bridges are instead used as crescendos to bigger movements within the songs, forming complex rhythms and awe inspiring melodic bliss. This is where Burst’s later albums took their most ambitious moments from and it obviously paid off in the end with stunning results.

While Burst is done and over with, their legacy as a premium metalcore outfit will surely go unnoticed due to their unmatched creativity of the aforementioned latter albums in their career. Yet we have to wonder how far Burst could have taken this sound if they had continued down this ‘more’ straightforward path. In a way, it’s great that a band like this can continue to build on a sound that could potentially sound stagnant in the end (I’m looking at you metalcore). However, with this much creativity under their belts, Burst could have become on top of the genre in no time with a signature sound such as this. Too bad though, Burst did the unthinkable and went on to bigger and better things.

Thanks dude. They broke up a few weeks back. Still crying about it. I personally think their last two albums were their best but if you really like metalcore (which I know you do), this album will own your ass. I liked your metalcore list by the way : D.

Going now since Burst hasn't done metalcore for a while. And I never said their was better, I said that their could be better and you wouldn't know about it.

superb read Wiz, I actually think you may be my second favourite reviewer on this site next to Willie.

It’s hard to pick a favourite on here seeing as almost every track contains equal parts speedy, hardcore melodies to jaunting epics
I think maybe there should be a "of" after "parts" but I am not 100% sure.

I don't really prefer metalcore all that much, but I guesss I can give this a spin tomorrow since it is too late for me today

Thanks Metalcore is my favorite genre, I'm looking into this immediately. I can't believe they broke up, well hopefully some of the members will form another band, or in a year two maybe they'll reform. You should check these guys out Wizard I'm sure you'll like them.

I bought this in Toronto, Ontario at an HMV for $20. Easy to find here I think hahaha. I own everything by Burst.

I was only kidding. I'd say Wiz's, Willie's, and even your's are better then my reviews. That makes me a sad panda you don't like em Gaslight.

I'll have to wait until Tues to get this then, as HMV's in Kitchener are already closed, and Monday's a holiday.

Your review reads a little awkwardly, I'd go over it a couple of times. But you got your point across very well so pos.

Yeah, I'm trying to work on the awkward wording/ sentences and such. Tbqh, I've never been a great writer but I like to see bands get the recognition they deserve. I will go over this again later tonight, maybe smooth it out a bit. Thanks for the pos'.

@ schyther
really? I thought WIz's review was really smooth and great

@Wiz
I agree with your statement of not picking favourites, I just lay'd my opinion on the table haha.

@Lisbon
don't worry man, you are such a new user, look at Wizard, he's been here for ages already and Willie has been over 2 years and so on. Your reviews are definitely much much better than mine were when I started out so I think you will be a superb reviewer in the future. Right now, I think you are just a very good writer, just keep reviewing and and mark my words you will be perfect in it in no time!

The third paragraph is perfect though, so if you need a "good writing reference" you can relate to use that.

Origo is leaps and bounds better ; ).

Hahahaha thanks dude haha. If you've heard Origo or Prey on Life, you've heard Burst do metalcore. They're just more sludgy than their contemporaries.
