Review Summary: Rap-Rock about sex that actually works.2 of 2 thought this review was well written
It's tempting to judge Hot Action Cop based on their name, album cover and song titles like "Goin' Down On It". Yet, it's surprising how well Hot Action Cop
works. Not only as mindless entertainment with attempts to ignore the lyrics. For all the sexual content of Hot Action Cop, they don't descend to the worthless misogyny sex music tends to think is necessary. The lyrics also aren't busy trying to offend you with threats that the drummer of this band will cum on your titties. They just want to have fun.
If there's anything odd with the album, is that the songs tend to be around 5 minutes long or a little less. Nothing wrong with long songs, but for a fun album it may be too much. Lucky for Hot Action Cop, the songs don't really drag. "Doom Boom" is a perfect example. It rocks for 5 minutes and blends Punk, Rap and Metal. Most tracks don't try to be creative like this, but they still don't drag because Hot Action Cop know how to entertain. Too bad the legnth will later punish this band.
As I said before, this album is sex-driven but it doesn't relay on pornographic samples or misogyny. "Goin' Down On It" is simply an ode to oral sex. Rob Werthenr claims that everyone from "we", "he", "she" and "you" are goin' down on it. Basically, everybody's going down. Even "Don't Want Her To Stay" and "Club Slut" aren't offensive as they should've been. Maybe it's because Hot Action Cop want to have fun and not rebel. The songs really feel more like a call to "Get up on the dancefloor and now shake your butt".
For all the partying and having sex, Hot Action Cop got time to show emotions and get a little serious. These days, every band does it so it's cliche. Only in Hot Action Cop's case, the more serious tracks actually sound very good and fit the vibe of the album. "Busted" in particularly, with its great melody and good lyrics. It's not everyday that serious songs fit a fun album.
When I said the length will punish this band, I meant it. Since the songs are long, you're probably getting tired by the end of "Club Slut". It's already 30 minutes of music. The album surprisingly only runs for 50 minutes. It doesn't mean the second half is not good. It's a little less, but "In A Little While" and "Why Judy" are already worth heating twice. Another small problem is that Hot Action Cop sounds a little bland from time to time. The vocals especially lack an identity. It's not much of a big flaw though, since the band can still kick energy and hooks.
Hot Action Cop
is an album that will be judged by many before they listen to it, yet it's amazing how good it is. It's more than just some good Hard Rock. "Doom Boom" is a classic song and the album does more than simply justify its existance. For those who were caught up in the Nu-Metal/Rap-Rock craze, this album is essential.
