Review Summary: A mixed bag, King Geedorah’s latest is as lyrically brilliant as ever.

With a hype train powered by nuclear locomotives, many fans look for Born Like This to answer some big questions: (1)Has DOOM actually done anything creative since 2005’s Dangerdoom?... and (2) Is this actually DOOM or the now infamous DOOM-poster? Consistently excellent as a lyricist, Dumile’s latest effort delivers some of his most technical content (seriously, he rhymes afro-trim with acronym, a-la “Ballskin”); he kills it with tongue-twister verbiage, convincing bravado, and an inspired “murdalizing” of sucka mcs. One of the truly unique storytellers in the game, DOOM maintains the same structure proven on Doomsday and Mm… Food: weave through a hypnotic sonic backdrop to emphasize the lyricist, while using production as a tool to permeate hooks and choruses. However unconventional, this strategy works near-medically in promoting focus on the verse and DOOM’s signature lazy flow.

Always abstract but never completely outside of his villainous atmosphere, “That’s That” is a perfect example – complex multi-alliterative passages coupled with the illest beat this side of Madvillainy. Speaking of Madlib (and by association, J Dilla), while some of the production here is recycled or old, the Jaylib brothers still bring a fresh perspective to their respective contributions; “Gazillion Ear” is probably one of the better tracks of the decade (the main beats from an unreleased Dilla track) and metal-fingers finds compositional harmony in “Lightworks”. Jake One lends a hand to four other tracks, which especially makes sense after a couple well-done DOOM features on 2008’s White Van Music. When Born Like This is accounted for, it’s easy to imagine a masked villain jumping from his mother’s womb 30-something years ago; and while some of it might sound sloppy at times, the man deserves recognition for being a 21st century version of what GZA accomplished. This is a mixed bag, but from the right perspective, it’s a mixed bag of treats from no impostor.

You know a couple of my friends are big Doom fans and we were listening to it last night and while they liked it, they sorta said it was his commercial attempt with appearances and stuff like that. Since Im not really a big Doom fan I couldnt comment but I liked what I heard, and didnt see any mainstream bullshit with it. Also your two-paragraph summary killed!

kygermo, don't listen to your friends at all... this isn't commercial, lol.

otherwise, i put this at the same level as all of his solo projects (i pretty much rate them all at a 3.5)... whereas madvillainy is a near classic, and dangerdoom is up there. i highly recommend listening to madvillainy, as these solo projects are far more of an acquired taste.

i thought so at first elim, but production-wise it's a slight improvement, and it's just as unique lyrically as ever. there was no way i could give this less than a 3.

yeah. i didnt really enjoy this album at all - seems like i'd heard half the beats before, and the ones i hadn't heard just seemed stale and boring. i'll be honest, even the rapping got kind of old.

definitely not going to be listening to this much.

thanks

tbh, i wont be listening to the album much as a whole... but there are some absolutely killer tracks here. album absolutely did not blow... i can understand those that consider it average via some lazy beats and discontinuity, but there's no way it sucked in any way.

I'm with kingsoby, i don't see how this is that different from his past efforts.

I think it blew harder than a white bitch with a backstage pass to a Busta Rhymes show.

it isn't. that, tied with the fact that it's not as good makes this a pretty mediocre album.

skyler, i agree that he's not doing much of anything new... but he's still doing what he does well and with just enough decent beats to stay consistent. of course, i don't think it's that amazing, but then again, i dont think anything doom's done has been amazing except madvillainy.
