Review Summary: After a somehow dissapointing album like Odditorium i was really anxious to hear what's this new album like.Being a fan of Welcome To The Monkey House's electronic sound i was happy to hear a more focused production. The band combines the old sound with sy
After downloading the first track The World Come On i felt that the album will be filled with Courtney's falsetto and fortunately i was wrong.Even though you can't understand a word he sings except for the chorus the song it's catchy and it's a good party starter.
Starting a new label wasn't a bad idea at all because the band sounds refreshed and now they have full control of their sound. They still play a mixture of styles like on their last album but here it sounds more focused and the songs are shorter (Don't worry you won't hear 5 minutes of feedback like on Love Is The New Feel Awful)
The World Come On-Mission Control-Welcome To The Third World punch sounds better than any other combos on other albums. They sound very different, Mission being a short lovely track right from the Moon in fact all the album sounds coming from up there in space.Welcome To The Third World is a Rolling Stone's like song that you might be playing at your party.Listening to the lyrics while dancing might not be a good choice because hearing such truths like ''You lips they sure do match my wallet'' and ''The boys like the girls and the girls like the money'' will trap you away from the fun.Maybe this is what The Dandy's are all about here : they criticize the ugly world we're living in but they put those harsh lyrics on funk music and moody instrumentals.
The hungover ballad Wasp In A Lotus and the brilliant And Then I Dreamt Of Yes bring some moments of regret. But when they had such an opportunity to realize something deep and beautiful they chose to leave the lyrics at a minimal status. And Then I... sounds as good as You Were The Last High but without any significant lyrics the song seems a bit superficial , especially with ''I've been outsmarted, And it hurts me more than it hurts me how much i miss...''.I guess you can't have them all every day.
Talk Radio and Love Song are simpler songs that get very close to the album Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia. While the former has a more spacey harmony, the latter is a country focused song with some nice sincere lyrics '' You're my love song''.
The album comes back to life when stepping out of the hangover tracks with another string of party rockers like Now You Love Me which believe it will make you sing along the lyrics.
On Mis Amigos, a cannabis ode, The Dandys create a Mexican sound that you might just see them dressed in some mariachis rocking out Cinco De Mayo.
One problem on ...Earth... is that there are too many drug odes and the album lacks the substance that their previous ones have.On The Legend Of The Last Of The Outlaw Truckers Courtney narrates the story with a full western sound filled up with some synthesizers.Don't get me wrong it's one of the best songs on the album but the chorus has nothing to do with the song's story ''cause i'm mean , see jacked up on java and nicotine(1)/dexedrine(2) ,metamphetamine(3)'' It sounds like a list of drugs they've tried.
Beast Of All Saints it's a song you hear at 3 AM when all the fun shuts down and everyone starts to realize that too much alcohol and drugs it's bad. It's a lovely ballad with whispered lyrics that don't disturb the ear when too drunk.
Valerie Yum (a intelligent pun on Valium) it's a 7 minute drug trip ending with a frenzy of Yums. All of a sudden the noise stops and Mousee D'Nougat closes the album with a quiet ambient sound that gets boring after 5 minutes.Funny the song's last seconds feature the intro to The World Come On meaning you can play the album without noticing where it ended but i don't think many fans will have patience to listen to 15 minutes of ''nothing''(At least it's better than A Loan Tonight)
The Dandy Warhols are still critics of the world today and they have some good points and they know it. They shape their music completely differend from the harsh lyrics combining the self hate with really catchy tunes.
Best Songs are
- Now You Love Me
- The Legend Of The Last Of The Outlaw Truckers
- Mission Control
