When I originally found out about this website it was my intention to do a review on "Wrong" but since that slot was taken I was going to do "One". But now since that's taken I've settled on "0 + 2 = 1".
At first when I listened to this album I didn't think much apart from "now" and "the fall", nothing really stood out to me. But when I put on my headphones and really listened I loved it and I can't understand why I didn't like it first off. I would say it is one of nomeansno's best albums. In the case of a lot of their albums (well at least it seems this way to me) every second song or so is good and the others I wouldn't think much of. This album is an exception to that (another example is 'wrong'). Most of the tracks really stand out to me.
This album is very like Primus' "the brown album" if not a bit better in my mind. It could be the bass lines and maybe the fact that its not as hard as "Wrong".
Anyway enough of that it's time for some song dissection:
Now
A brilliant opener and possibly the best on the album. Starts off with just guitar and vocals and builds up in the chorus with the introduction of bass and drums. Brilliant lyrics. A song that you can listen to over and over again and a classic nomeansno song, one of their best. 5/5
The Fall
Starts of with drums and a cool overdubbing chant. Then comes bass and guitar. Great sing along sort of lyrics and the three guys all echo each other. Another of the better songs on the album 5/5
0 + 2 = 1
The title track of the album but surprisingly one of my least favourites. I find it doesn't really go anywhere and theres nothing really standing out, it's sort of boring. A very good bass line though. 2/5
The Valley of the Blind
The album picks up here again with this great upbeat track. It's catchy and the lyrics are brilliant. You really want to sing along with it when you hear it. 5/5
Mary
This song reminds me a lot of Primus. Its kind of got a funky sort of feel and a good track over all. 4/5
Everyday I Start to Ooze
This is a typical nomeansno songs. It's like a random story he's telling and it's fun and interesting to listen to. It's powerful and you want to sing along. You'll either like it or you won't. I do. 5/5
When Putting it all in order aint enough
Another great track. I love the lyrics especially the tune to which the chorus is song. It's powerful and the lyrics and music really go hand in hand. Again a song you find yourself singing along to. 5/5
The night nothing became everthing
An instrumental in the answer to "The Day Everything became nothing" on a previous album "Small parts isolated and destroyed". Short but without the need to be any longer. Leads into the next track. 3/5
I Think You Know
The lyrics are kinda of chopped and shouted and go hand in hand with the music. Very random but at times sort of annoying. Thankfully short. 2.5/5
Ghosts
This song weirdly reminds me of System of a Down but that's probably just me. The lyrics don't come in for a good while. It reminds me in a cold and haunted house and being alone. Very eery and certainly does justice to the title. Goes on maybe just a tad bit long and can be a bit boring but it grows on you. 3/5
Joyful Reunion
A nice ending to the album I think. Its upbeat and I love the lyrics and the music is great. Again though I know I keep saying this I find myself singing along unintentionally. A good track. 4/5
