Razorlight's debut is somewhat interesting on the first listen. While it has an undoubtedly British feel to it, it's often hard to remove the question from your mind; "who is this? Razorlight or The Strokes"? The album does have a slightly more unique feel than is revealed on first listen. The most unique part of Razorlight is the vocal aspect of the band. While the vocals do sound oddly similar to those of The Strokes, they are enjoyable in some songs where there are some slightly unique flavours added to the mix.
The album's first single, "Stumble and Fall" is probably the album's strongest moment. It's one of those oddly addictive songs that will keep you reaching for the repeat button. While there are a few other standout tracks, "Stumble and Fall" is miles ahead of the rest of the album. While the vocals are an enjoyable part of the album, it often sounds like the band are just trying a little too hard to be cool or fashionable especially when the vocalist will say words rather than singing them in the same way The Strokes did in "New York City Cops" with the line "it was f*cking strange".
The biggest problem with Razorlight's debut is that it just goes on for too long. At least that's the way it seems after listening to it. It seems as though the listener has sat through 2 hours of the band. In actual fact, the album doesn't even hit the 50 minute mark. After listening to 5 or 6 of the 12 tracks on offer, it's likely that the listener will not want to stick around for more. While more patient listeners will be rewarded with "Stumble and Fall", it doesn't make up for the sameness of the rest of the album. It's often hard to distinguish between tracks because there is just not enough diversity between songs to actually tell the difference between them.
So is "Up All Night" a bad record? Not really, it's not that it's bad at all, it's just that it's not very good. At times, this album is a decent piece of garage rock, but for a more consistent debut album in this style, there is no contest between this album and The Strokes' "Is This It?". If you are hungry for some good garage rock, buy The Strokes album instead. However, it's definitely worth picking up the "Stumble and Fall" single.
Pros
- Fun music
- Vocals are slightly unique, especially when British accents are revealed
- Guitars sound good and have the occasional cool lead
- Nice basslines
Cons
- Boring
- Dragged out
- Sounds more like a rehash of a Strokes album than something original
Reccomended Tracks

You've really described things perfectly; fun but dragged out. This album is perfectly mediocre. There;s plenty of bands doing the same music much better, but then again, it could be much worse.
I was actually going to see them play (I didn't care about them, I just wanted to see Asobi Seksu who were on beforehand) and somehow they magically sold out the show.

Thanks man. I wouldn't pay to see them by themselves, but if they were opening for a band I wanted to see, I'd be pleased.

| | | I think that they deserve a lot more than jus a 2.5. They're a great band, true, the songs may get a bit boring, but what bout "In the City"? An amazing song, which is totally unlike any of the others. They deserve a 3.5 at least!
| | | I'd give it a 3 for about the same reasons but there are some very good songs.
| | | I disagree. I thing this album is great. Full of life and uplifting.
Rip It Up is the best song on it by some margin.
| | | Alot of the reviews for this album were in the vein of 'too perfect to be true', but I agree, The Strokes album is miles ahead

I borrowed this album recently and I though it was decent apart from To the Sea and Which Way Is Out.
Garble Garble
| | | Razorlight! what a load of toss
| | | this was a crap cd and i think that it was a pice of monky ****. i mean my band is better than this.
| | | I really like this album, I only bought it about a month ago. I've got the special edition which includes the track "Somewhere Else" at the very end of it as Track 14 and honestly guys... what an AMAZING song! It's so great, I first heard it live at Oxegen (music festival in Ireland) and it totally blew me away... anyone else heard it and agree with me??

I like eaps of these songs, golden touch is just great, don't go back to dalston i have listen to over 50 times since i put the album on my computer, and in the city is good too. Still, i tend to think they could have made a better album than this. Anyway good review.
| | | I feel you have somewhat missed the point. True, the album is patchy and inconsistent, but why not judge the album on its own merits? They don't sound like The Strokes so why compare the two? 3.5 would be my score, but Razorlight have alot of potential. Somewhere Else, Golden Touch and Stumble and fall are fantastic songs. Also; as if having a British accent is unique!
| | | not bad, some decent riffs. only wish id got the one with somewhere else added.

Brad Man does not understand the meaning of rock music. If he does not like talent like razorlight he wont like any other brirish bands.
Great aldum though deserves 4/5

Good album, Golden Touch and Somewhere Else are the greatest songs they've done.
