Metalcore started out more as an underground movement, but nowadays, metalcore is raging through the mainstream. The formula's always the same; thrashing guitar, some aggressive, angry growls, and always, a catchy melodic chorus. In fact, there's so much metalcore going on that people might forget that metalcore's not the only type of angry, aggressive metal that's still being played.
Five Finger Death Punch's debut album proves itself worthy of recognition. Ivan Moody is a pretty sweet singer. He can do some pretty extreme growling, as well as sing clearly and tunefully. Naturally, that's not an uncommon find. However, another thing that makes this band stick out is its melodies. It's almost sad what types of music people will call "melodic". For many "melodic" metalcore bands, if the vocalist can sing, they're melodic. However, Ivan goes farther, and with the band, he creates some of the most pleasant raging tunes to listen to. Naturally, his voice doesn't stick out. If you're listening to "The Bleeding", you'll find it odd just how much it sounds like a Breaking Benjamin song. The opening guitar sounds quite like The Diary Of Jane, and Moody's vocals can almost be mistaken as Benjamin Burnley's vocals.
Aside from the vocals, the instrumentals are great. The drumming rages through the entire album, with many powerful touches here and there. Not uncommon for post-thrash metal bands. The guitar and bass are also pretty good. The guitar solos are technical and melodic, and the riffs on the album don't repeat themselves alot. Filler is not a word that this band understands. Everyone one of the songs are great, and there's really not a whole lot of similarity going on. Some songs feature more singing than growling, while the most feature just the opposite.
To sum it all up, The Way of the Fist is a strong first effort by a new band. We will hopefully see a lot more of this good stuff coming. It's an enjoyable listen to any metalheads out there who have had it with bands like Killswitch Engage and Avenged Sevenfold. The melodies going on in the songs are marvelous, and this is one of the best metal records I've heard so far this year.

This isn't a bad review, but another paragraph couldn't hurt. Maybe explaining why this interests you personally and why you think it deserves a 4, but I can vaguely tell what kind of sound this might be.

| | | Good review, Horrible cd. These guys are just burst at the seems with homosexual tension. They all claim to be "True metal". Yet their music sounds indentical to every cliche metal band ever.
The guitar riffs sound like a penis grinding against the pick-ups.

I thought I was a great cd. It is better than a lot of other crap out there. Sweet guitars, killer lyrics and some of the best vocals around.

These days, the airwaves are completely polluted with bullshit that is now considered "music". People wouldn't relalise good, real music if it were to bite them in the ass. It's stupid to put down a band when you don't even give them a chance. Sorry that 5FDP aren't emo or up to today's "music standards" of being on MTV. The album is the best I've heard in a long time and their live performences are badass. The band as a whole are so personal and devote a lot of time back to the fans, it's a rare thing these days with all the ego maniac 'big shots' in the music industry. I don't agree with the review that Ivan's voice doen't stick out. I'd recommend the album for sure, it's a killer. It's addicting and true to their slogan "true metal". Sorry if you can't appreciate it.

I feel Five Finger Death Punch is an Senational Band!! The have created a complete master piece with their current album "The Way of The Fist" that is in stores everywhere!!
The definitely brought back the true meaning of metal that was once lost, but now it's found through Five Finger Death Punch!!
The album is the best that I have heard in a long time!! Its about time!!

I love it how fanboys create an account, post one really long comment, rate a shitty album a classic and then never come back.

I gotta say, this is a pretty good band. guitarists seem pretty solid and its nice to hear a singer that doesnt sound like his balls got ripped off at birth.
