From Autumn To Ashes Too Bad You're Beautiful CD Review

Key Tracks:
Chloroform Perfume
Take Her To The Music Store
Reflections
Short Stories With Tragic Endings

Hailing from Long Island, From Autumn To Ashes have outdone themselves on their 'first' CD (I put that in quotes because their first CD was actually Sin, Sorrow, and Sadness released on Tribunal records). All I can say about this album is 'wow'. Here are 10 tracks of some of the best-structured music I have ever heard. Anytime I listen to a CD, I am always listening for the places where I can feel every word that is being sung/spoken/screamed. This album is one of those few that you can really feel in your heart. One of my favorite tracks on the album, Mercury Rising, is completely spoken by Francis (drummer/backup singing). When you listen to the words it's almost eerie, but it can almost be an eye-opener. He repeats, 'Hello, my first name is distance, and I really don't care if I ever wake up again' towards the end of the song, and he repeats it again and again until he starts screaming it. With the voices that are singing behind him (which are also all him) it sends chills down my spine every time I hear it. For just a 'filler' track it really grabs the listeners. Did I mention that he does all his drum work while singing? I don't know how he does it with the drum tracks that are being played, but he is able to execute it perfectly.

Now, on to Short Stories With Tragic Endings. I am sure all of you have heard this song by now, and you know how well structured it is. This piece comes equipped with strings, piano, an upright bass, and the voice of Melanie Wills. The voice of Melanie is what makes this track one of the most beautiful tracks I have ever heard, in my opinion. The outro of the song is her, a few acoustics, and the rest of the FATA boys. He voice is what guides this song from the 'awesome' category to the 'beautiful' category. Most of the time, when a band has a 10-minute song the whole thing becomes monotonous, and you are looking for an end in sight. Not this song. 9:24 goes by quicker than you'd imagine. I love how the lyrics in this song are almost like closely related stories whereas; Ben and Francis are singing/screaming about an irretrievable love and how it tears them apart that it is just that; irretrievable. Yet Melanie is singing about how much she wants a lost love back, yet it is understandable that it won't happen. Just listening to the track, I get lost in the whole song. The word 'beautiful' isn't giving this song as much credit as it deserves. Words can't describe it I suppose, but it is definitely one of the most gorgeous pieces of music ever written.

I spoke a lot about a single track on the CD, but not one track on this CD should be overlooked. Every track is filled with every bit of emotion possible. The albums songs sometimes repeat themselves in a sense that, some songs start out the same, and have the same feel throughout, but every song has its own charm. I love this album, and I highly recommend this to anyone that enjoys highly emotional music. This has all the emo and hardcore that any emo or hardcore kid would need, all in one CD.
Fantasic album. 4/5

Live they had another drummer play and they did chloroform perfume, mercury rising, and Short stories all with him up and about singing. But I've also seen them do it with him playing the kit as well. Excellent band, much talent.

I just bought this CD recently and it by far my favourite and best album that I have! It's absolutely an incredibly piece of work. Top song, without question, Short Stories With Tragic Endings... yet my second favourite would be Eulogy For An Angel. That was their opening at a show my friends went to, I didn't(Gah!). The stage was all dark, covered in smoke then it went completely dark, you couldn't see anything and 'BAM!' they started.(that's how my friends described it anyways)

Great review! FATA is amazing, and Short Stories With Tragic Endings is one of the most beautiful songs ever written, in my opinion.

i just saw fata and atreyu on 5/11 at the odeon in cleveland.. it was one of the sickest shows i've ever seen, the entire floor was a moshpit.. if you're familiar with both bands, you know that atreyu is a lot more hardcore, aggressive, and in your face than fata but still fata's mosh pit was sicker than atreyu's.. i think that really says something.. also, it's not hard to get in to the mood to mosh at a concert, if the music is aggressive you'll probably end up jumping around.. but what really moved me was fckin people beating the hell out of each other in the moshpit WHILE screaming every word to the song.. it was awesome, a truly moving experience.. they're my two favorite bands and if you don't know about them, you better know soon or else you just suck =)

edit: fata's set list was-
milligram smile
cherry kiss
lilacs and lolita
no trivia
every reason to
capeside rock
the after dinner payback
i think there might've been one or two more but i was in the pit so i'm not quite sure ^_^

So does the guy from Beloved. It's not a big deal. Claudio from Coheed and Cambria plays guitar leads and solos while singing. If you ask me that's much more difficult that playing stright forward popcore with a spritz of double bass every so often and singing at the same time. Did I mention I hate From Autumn to Ashes? Them, Poison the Well, Bane, and Converge just get me. I hate all of them and I don't know how they became so popular. Since this is FATA's thread I'll focus on them. They have pretty unimaginative songs. I mean they hit a decent song every so often but then again so does KoRn. The don't have much talent. I personally can shred around any of their guitarists, which is sort of sad because I'm just some guy and they're supposedly established guitarists in a band. I mean I play bass via my guitar abilities and knowing songs like "Cherry Kiss" I could probably beat them down on bass too. But this is all forgivable. I mean, Alkaline Trio doesn't have much talent but they write great songs I they have a great sound. FATA does not. They write terrible songs and the sound sucks. The screamer has one of the most annoying screams this side of Bane and the singer, or rather drummer, yelps like a pop singer. Also, their lyrics are melodramatic overwritten pseudodepressed teenage girl who cuts on her arm livejournal that nobody reads bullshit. That is all.

I downloaded "the best song on that albulm" and it's okay. They're getting off easy on best song because it's simple and catchy and epic, so of course my first listen is going to be my most enjoyable. They're just not that great. Somebody admit it.

Yeah, I don't really like this album. Musically, it's very well written and very fun to play on guitar and bass, but the vocals just kill it. Ben's screams are really weak, whereas he sounds awesome on the Sin, Sorrow, and Sadness EP and even better on The Fiction We Live, and Fran... well, he just can't sing, bottom line. It's sad because the melodies are really good, but his voice just ruins it. Thankfully, what he lacks in vocal talents he makes up on the kit. Furthermore, there's something else that ruins this album for me, I can't quite put my finger on it... I think it might be the production and the way everything's mixed. In the end though, it's a decent album, but VERY overrated. I think if they re-recorded it in the future, it might sound better to my ears.

I know a lot of people to hate it, but I prefer The Fiction We Live by far. The screams and the clean vocals are 10x better, the band plays a lot tighter, the production is top notch, there's lots of dynamics, it's just an all-around better written album.

Is Fran the gawky, goofy motherfucker? Whenever I see pics of this band I laugh at that guy. Also, I read an interview with them and they said they wanted to have the lyrics to The Fiction We Live be so depressing that some people commit suicide upon reading it. That's a bit too sadistic and livejournal for me. Their lyrics suck anyway. Whoever succumbs to that doggerel needs psychiatric and literary help.

I love when people give me this stuff. Sure it's true, but most people in the forums hate Good Charlotte right? I mean if everybody here hates them then how are they so popular in the outside world. Generally, it's because the people in the outside world don't have a diverse palette and accept this saccharine BS. The way I look at it most people who fawn over trash like FATA and label it is "emocore," probably haven't heard enough music to really be educated. Also, they may not be educated in music in the classic sense, like ear training and actual musicianship that can give one perspective on the music they listen to. So like all of the Good Charlotte fans posting about how much they love GC in their livejournals, popcore fans cast adulation all of the threads of bands like FATA and a few people scoff at them but mostly they go unnoticed or backed up by other like fanboys/girls. I mean I don't know about the individual music education of the people in this thread but this is just my personal experience on musicianforums. Good day, sirrah.

Great points. I like FATA a lot, but I didnt care much for The Fiction We Live. I liked a few songs off of it, and those which I do like are awesome. I agree, he screams much, MUCH, better on this album. If they re-recorded Too Bad You're Beautiful with the production quality shown on their new album, and the lead singer's much improved screaming ability (Preferably with LESS drummer singing.. god he's annoying), that album would own so much more. :thumb:

Eh? I'm not really sure what you're getting at here. I listen to a ton of music, from pop-punk to death metal and everything in between. I like bands from every genre.. and I like FATA.. just because you dont like them or have this idea in your head that they suck horribly, doesnt mean you are going to be able to impress this upon everybody else. You're being a little harsh here.

FATA... okay, I don't like this band very much, screaming like they do just doesnt do it for me, but they do have a inkling of potential, I love the song chloroform perfume, I havent heard any other songs that are this nice by them though, so I'm not sure... If someone could guide me to a song similair that is sung by the band that would be nice, thanks.

*I respect everyone's taste in music, even if it is the taste of 'singers' screaming every unaudible lyric about suicide... this music scares me, but whatever... Enjoy it!*
