Release Date: 2005 | Tracklist

Review Summary: Chiodos, a relatively new band on the hardcore scene, is able to provide an remarkable combination of metal-like riffs, soft piano melodies, and face-melting lyrics in order to create a masterpiece of a CD: Alls Well That Ends Well.

At this moment, you may be inquiring as to why this CD has been labeled “Classic”. Is “Classic” not a title only to be awarded to the most inspiring and profound albums ever to grace the face of our planet? As I sit here at my desk, I myself question the rating I have just bestowed upon Chiodos’s 2005 release, All’s Well That Ends Well. However, a quick tap of the play button on my itunes instantly shatters any doubts concerning the rating of this album.

It is clear, when listening to AWTEW, that you are in the presence of greatness. The opening intro, a short piano piece, lulls you into a sense of piece. At the end of those 50 seconds, you are suddenly void of any peace; thrust into the fast-paced, melodic, opening riff to All Nereids Beware. The song builds, and suddenly you are enthralled in the world that is Chiodos. Around you the music is spun, like a clever trap. While the piano, bass, and rhythm guitar all lay the foundations of your basic song, the heavily overdriven guitar creates a technical web of masterful riffing. A series of deep, thick drum riffs are layered under the previously described melody. All the while, a high-pitched, voice is heard wailing poetic lyrics; accompanied by cleverly placed screams. When the song comes to an end, you simply yearn for more.

Many aspects of AWTEW ensure that no other band comes close to matching Chidos’s original sound. Unlike most bands in today’s modern world of music, the piano/keyboard is an essential gear in Chiodos machine. Where other bands featuring a steady stream of keys may be considered “cheesy”, Chiodos is able to weave the keyboard into their sound effortlessly. The constant movement present in most of AWTEW’s guitar riffs helps keep the songs fresh and upbeat without letting the songs mesh together. The unpredictable vocals also keep the listener on his/her toes throughout the album- unable to predict what may occur next. When listening to this album, it is virtually impossible to find one specific flaw; all the instruments seem to be played to perfection.

Unknown to many, “All’s Well That Ends Well” is a title that this sophomore Chiodos album shares with a play written by non other than William Shakespeare. In a way, AWTEW has more in common with a Shakespeare play than just the title. Both the album and the play are indisputably masterpieces. Like the play, however, the album is not appreciated by all who listen to it. But enjoy it or not, AWTEW is a piece of art worthy of recognition regardless of musical taste.

You don't detail much of the songs. All I get is that it's great and unpredictable, and has a striking resemblance to Shakespearian plays. It's fine for a second review, but could be so much better.

And also no. Just no.

Very good review. I'd have to agree with a lot on here, but it's easy to not be attracted to some aspects of this album. For me, it's the vocals. I agree with your comments on the keyboards, they do it better than most bands out there

Thanks.

I didn't go into detail about the tracks because i find that to be..... well boring and pretty much useless. I want to convay the feeling of the cd, not give my personal opinion on every lyric and riff Chiodos has recorded.

If you wanted to give an overview of every riff chiodos recorded, you'd only have to write about a sentence or two... pwn

but seriously, good cd.

That's not what I'm saying. But specific examples from songs could give people reason to check out THOSE songs and figure out if they like the album. Just saying it has awesome lyrics/riffs/keyboards is pretty broad a statement. Those aren't boring or useless if done correctly.

I know what your saying, but i didn't really give broad statements. (at least i tried not to). I more or less tried to describe the sound as best i could without using spesific examples. (save the part about the opening song)

By no means am I an expert, but I think specific examples are what makes a review...well... a review.

This review was more like a travel brochure to Cancun or something, except instead of travel destinations, it was this terribly mediocre band.

Alright. I more or less anilized the opening track. I did not want to do a track by track review. This is how i chose to write it because this is the kind of reveiw that i personally find most helpful when browsing the site.

DUDE, you completely pwned the world with your post. But seriously, the band isn't bad. They're not as generic as the generalities in the scene. I love them live. But for a review you have to dwell deeper into the cd.

Pwned the world? haha

EDIT: Yeah, I hate track-by-tracks too, but just go into more detail next time. Less fluff, more stuff, as my History teacher always tells me.This Message Edited On 02.08.07

yah i said it. And to be truthful, the "metal-like riffs" really arent that "crazy". Every song they wrote and put on this cd is based upon the same few notes with slight variation in tempo and order. The piano part which i've taught myself in mere seconds (im not good at piano) consists of arpeggiating 3 chords with one hand while the other hand plays the chord. Nothing is special about the music. The thing this band has going for them is the atmosphere they put the listener into.

Who said to make a track-by-track?

Read any review by any member of the staff, or approved reviewers, and most of them usually do an overview of the album mentioning certain songs and why they're good/not good. If you're going to give something a 5, you have to back it up with all you've got instead of two paragraphs devoted to the opening intro and what the band uses in their 'classic' album.

1) We're trying to help you to make a review that will be well-rounded and generally liked and pos'd.
2) I'm not an asshole, so I'm not going to neg it for some inane reason like it doesn't have enough detail or it's got a 5 (cuz lyk ur totali rong!). A few people have noted what I have, so take that to mind, considering that most of them have been doing it a lot longer than you have (like Iluvatar).

p.s. Iluvatar has bigger cajones than most anyone. Pos'd for the neg, Iluv. :D
