  • ResidentNihilist the premise), Derrida and of course Ballard's Invisible Dream Company. As for authors/books I'm into, I love the twentieth century German writers, pre and post WWII, the most, especially Gunter Grass, Heinrich Boll, Elias Canetti and, depending on the novel, Hermann Hesse. Other writers I like include Vidal (his essays are amazing), Diderot, Clive Sinclair, Proust, JG Ballard, John Jeremiah Sullivan, Arthur Rimbeau and Ray Bradbury.

  • ResidentNihilist It depends what you're looking for, in terms of theory 'If On A Winter's Night...' is the better one as he's been heavily influenced by Barthes and others of his school but I prefer 'Invisible Cities' because for me it's not just a powerful exercise in theory, it's just a magnificent piece of writing. As for other authors, Donald Barthlme, BS Johnson (though he can be a bit too technique heavy), Nabokov, Diderot (Rameau's Nephew was a big influence on Calvino's 'If On A Winter's Night...' due to
