Now what exactly would be the difference between Contributor and Staff? I assume Staff has more responsibility?

Staff reviews get put on Metacritic, their reviews show up in the staff reviews tab, and staff can rate in 0.1 increments. Not sure what else.

I have a soul which disqualifies me from sput staff.

Contributors get their reviews featured more often because of name recognition and exposure, they'll also tend to be viewed as "staff in waiting" as long as they continue to write and improve.

Staff get access to promos, the blog, etc. and can feature lists. They also get to rate in 0.1 increments and are eligible to have their material appear on metacritic. All staff reviews are automatically flagged and featured as well.

Sowing, is there a rough generally accepted minimum number of reviews within a certain time frame in order to qualify for contributor? Just trying to get a sense of how much I would have to write within a year to have a chance of applying next year.

No hard line for review numbers and I can't stress that enough. Quality > Quantity. With that said, we do need to see a trend of being able to contribute with relative consistency.

Ok cool, that's about what I was thinking. We'll see if I can pump out 20 reviews this year... Probably not.

I was feeling hopeful, until I saw the comment that said I need to show the trait of writing reviews with a relative consistency. I've gone, like, three months without publishing anything on this site. Damn. I know I'd be pushed to write more reviews (and better reviews!) if I get accepted. And even if I don't, I would think "okay maybe I'll get accepted next time if I write more".

It really depends to be honest. Some years it's just 2-3 of each, other times I've seen 5 staff and 7-8 contributors. It's a factor of open spots needing filling and available writers who've earned a more professional role.

The average I'd say though, any given year, is 3 staff and 4-5 contributors.

I'll periodically check in on applications. I was generous with the time range to maximize opportunities, but if the apps slow to a trickle or halt completely I may pull the plug a little early. To be completely honest I picked 2/28 for personal convenience with my own schedule. Either way, I imagine it won't be too long after we close things out, maybe a few days.

A lot of people in this thread I'm surprised weren't already contributors. Looking on this, the site certainly has some good writers.

@conmaniac: yeah, that game rules. The 2016 Doom was also fantastic, a wonderful reboot of the franchise (despite some slightly generic multiplayer)

@Soccer: I played some of Doom 2016 and really liked it, but even as a strict console player (I have it on XBone), I found myself thinking "this would probably handle so much better with a mouse and keyboard, assuming I could get used to using that after using controllers for so long." The movements and handling always feel off to some extent, namely during the platforming sections.

I could certainly see what you mean. Personally, I just loved the arcade-y feel of the whole thing, such as not conforming to the two-weapon layout of other modern shooters and omitting a sprint button (since you're running the entire time, lol). Multiplayer might have been a bit derivative (very Unreal-esque, not that that's a bad thing), but the single player had me hooked until the end... even though I tortured myself by beating it on Nightmare mode

Seeing as it has been officially 1 week since I posted the openings and the application submission has crawled to nearly a total stop (1 app in almost the last 3 days), I'm going to wrap this process up a few days early.

I'll close the apps sometime early Saturday morning (US EST), which gives any last minute submissions approximately 24-30 hours to get his or her application in. Based on recent results, I don't think we're missing too many people, but if you wanted to apply - be sure to throw your name in the hat quickly.

That's a pretty awesome idea, just a word of caution - if you're writing a 1-star review it can be very easy to feel sucked into just unleashing vitriol at the compromise of a structured critique, and one I'm not entirely sure I succeeded in when writing my Corey Feldman or Charli XCX review. It's easy even if you don't like something to appreciate why it's good, but it's near impossible to appreciate the positives if something is defiling your lobes - so tread carefully!

Did you ever read my Waking the Cadaver review (the 0/5 one)? That was a decent medium, I'd say

1 reviews are the funnest to write

i don't think it's imperative for reviews to be "these are the cons, however, these are the pros", especially for a 1 star review. if i've rated something 1 star, it's because there's nothing redeemable whatsoever, so there's no point shoehorning in any backhanded praise. it just leads to a hamfisted review that isn't able to stand by its convictions.

but if your contrib it doesn't matter cuz people can't downvote you.....

I think I may have put that a little wrong, I think I'm just wary of just shitting on something and lacing it in hyperbole just because it's something I'm not a big fan of.
