"Listen" to One OK Rock feat Avril

2017-01-12 by DatsNotDaMetulz | 22 Comments
In their attempt to break the mainstream and garner worldwide success with new album Ambitions, Japanese post-hardcore-turned-alt-rock group One OK Rock have enlisted the help of ever relevant Canadian singer Avril Lavigne for their latest single, entitled "Listen". The album, out now in Japan, comes out on January 13 worldwide via Fueled By Ramen. Other guests include Alex Gaskarth of All Time Low and pop-rock pretty boys 5 Seconds Of Summer.

"Wow Fueled by Ramen is still around?"

I think they still have PATD, Paramore, fun, and 21 pilots, so they are probably bigger than ever right now

I think this album is where One OK Rock sell out. They claimed in Kerrang! that they're targeting the global mainstream with this album, and by bringing in pop musicians like Avril and 5SOS I think we can safely assume all traces of post-hardcore are well and truly gone. Haven't listened to it yet but expecting it to be highly watered down alt/pop rock.

Welp. Wonder if this attempt to gain global success by selling out will blow up in their faces if the old fans don't like it.

This sell-out sound is very intentional though. I mean I will likely dislike it even more than 35xxxv but I can't completely blame their "let's cash in while we matter" thing, especially when it seems planned to go back to an older sound later on

Yeah they've pretty much explicitly stated that they'll go back to their older sound later. It's kinda nice to see a band so open about what they're doing and not pull the "this is who we really are, like it or not" BS.

Band went down the drain. Niche Syndrome ruled. Interesting to see that they've been kind of open about this only being a temporary departure, maybe they'll come around again.

well the hook is ok but if you got anyone other than avril lavigne it would probably be better

also shame to see this coming from a once-talented band tbh

Unless this catches on with the Indie / Hipster crowd I really don't see this reaching mainstream heights
