I love it. Great instrumentals, that all flow nicely. Tilian has more aggression in his voice, but Jon sounds low quality compared to Tilian
|
| |
RIDING A RHINO PICO DE GALLO
|
| |
that part at :39 is dankest riff of 2016
|
| |
THIS HAS ME SO FUCKING HYPE. Jon sounds vicious as hell and Tilian sounds so on fucking point. The instrumentals are great as per usual, and ughhhhhhhhh. So good.
|
| |
It's taking all of my inner strength right now to not go 100% fanboy over this right now.
|
| |
damn I've been waiting and it's off to a good start. jon and tilian both sound great, tilian sounds much better, loving the aggressiveness. some of the riffs are sounding like WISIRO too. this is so fucking good
hype 100%
|
| |
the band jac always confuses with dead can dance lmao
|
| |
This is how Tillian's vox needed to sound like on the previous releases.
|
| |
i could never really get into tillian dgd but this is absolutely HUGE
|
| |
First time in a long time I'm actually digging the guitars and the lyrics.
|
| |
0:58 is the best
|
| |
"White 21 is the maximum fun"
wait, huh?
|
| |
I'm kinda ashamed how fanboy I went when I got home from work and saw this. Tilian's vox has improved so much since the last album. Of course, as usual, Jon's lyrics are entertaining.
|
| |
Jon Mess is the best lyricist this century has ever known. But for real though, this song is great and Tilian sounds better here than he ever has

the first thing I say in the morning is
|
| |
Fucking awesome song. Tilian sounds way better than previous DGD releases, so much more raspier and raw. Drums are tight, guitars sound like older era DGD, mess sounds aggressive, drums are tight. Goddamn, fanboying hard. Can't wait for this release
|
| |
Hasn't really changed my mind about the band in general but at least Tillian sounds a lot more tolerable.
|
| |
This is pretty bland. So it's better than their last album already.
|
| |
Out of all the criticisms I've ever heard of DGD this might be the first time I've heard someone accuse them of being bland.
|
| |
Super fun track. Tillian sounds so much better. Nice to hear some aggression from him.
|
| |
On point as usual. Can't wait for the album.
|
| |
great better than most of ig
|

god damn this is so good

It's not "fun", it's pure cheese.
Song sucks.

primus is your favorite band you can't be that opposed to 'pure cheese'
|
| |
you should love the cheese
embrace the cheese
...sail the seas of cheese
|
| |
Wow this is the first thing I've enjoyed since Happiness by these guys.
|
| |
p good
tilian doesn't sound quite as weak
|
| |
behold motherfuckers
|
| |
Song is hype. This could be the best of the Tilian era
|
| |
Sounds like a return to form. Hope the rest of the album will be as good. Needs less repeated choruses though.
|
| |
Album would be out October 7th, right? The 8th is a Saturday. I could never really get into this band but this song sounds good. Loving Tillian's vocals.
|
| |
no, no guys, he is not the best lyricist of the century, wtf. Do you even read?
Never understood the love for this band, even as a post-hardcore fan. this isn't good imo
|
| |
it's a joke
|
| |
Band never fucks up, can't wait for this album.
|
| |
Man, that really flew over your head didn't it Veldin?
|
| |
Well.. Okay. It's definitely better than most of their stuff with Tilian, but I still feel as if they've stagnated ever since he joined.
|
| |
Well, some of the chords were pretty nice. I'm not asking for post-hardcore to go all the way back to the 90's, but can we at least get some At the Drive-In ripoff group in the spotlight?
|
| |
rules hard
|
| |
I suppose it did go over my head, eh. But I've seen youtube comments and users on Sput when a new lyric music video is released praising Jon's lyrics and I really don't understand how anyone could enjoy his awful HS poetry bullshit. I'm gonna go thru this band's entire discography tomorrow after work so I can get a full opinion (I haven't heard 4 of their albums), but I don't think this band is worthy of much praise. Plus, people keep talking about Tillian like he's actually interesting or bringing something new to the band, but he's that dude I saw on stage at Warped Tour who sounded like every other Post-Anthony Green singer out there (this was for Tides of Man). I appreciate the manic riffs, but they always seem to be "mathy" for the sake of being progressive and not holding much lasting value. However, if there is one thing I truly appreciate about DGD, it's their consistent artwork by Mattias Adolfsson. He's like the only consistent member of DGD
|
| |
Well considering music is subjective, not everybody is going to like the same artists. For example I love Dance Gavin Dance, and even tho Mess is far from a lyrical genius, it's just fun to hear someone spout such nonsense as opposed to the pseudo-intellectual shit that a lot of younger bands try to pull off. I just love how fun the band is, but I do know that it isn't for everybody. Their best album is Happiness in my opinion, and Kurt is by far my favorite of the three clean vocalists. Swan is a monster on the guitar, albeit not as experimental since Zach left. I do agree on the artwork tho, I've loved all of their album covers
|
| |
@Veldin: I don't really think it's worth going through all that if you aren't feeling what you've already heard, and I pretty much agree with you on your interpretation of them. Happiness, the self-titled, and the song "Heat Seeking Ghost of Sex" are pretty much the only things I ever revisit by these guys and that's almost purely because they have that good high school nostalgia working for them. I've gotten into much rawer post-hardcore sounds since, cause that's just where my tastes went.
As far as all the Jon Mess lovers among their fans, his lyrics are pretty trash. But all of their lyrics are, really. It's not like they're trying. Plus, I 150% believe Will Swan on Happiness was their best screamer and Kurt Travis was their best singer.
|
| |
THIS IS AWESOME I'm digging Tilian doing some of the screams, lyrics are still weird and wonderful, so pumped for this
|
| |
Never gave DGD a chance before but this is awesome.
|
| |
Sowing I'm a little surprised you never gave them a shot. Song is dope as to be expected from DGD
|
| |
@adoreswancore pple say this band is bland all the time including lots of my friends.
@milliondead couldn't agree more about Happiness that's why it's still my fav album of theirs. Also it has the best guitar and bass work(Carl Barker, NASA) real catchy and memorable riffs.
This song is solid tho for what is is
|
| |
@thehung89 well that's news to me, normally all I hear is complaints about the vocals, lyrics etc.
|
| |
Tilian sounds like he's found his place in the band finally but I thought this song was a bit safe for them.
|
| |
Didn't expect to like this after how terrible IG was.
|
| |
I love the first four records but this song fucking sucks. Tilian fucking sucks. BASED MESS has nosedived on the last few records. DGD cruise control until 3:00. Get it together sputnik this is lowtier for this band
|
| |
Hate to admit it but yeah @beeryan ur right to an extent. Song does sound like a rehash of something off their last 2 albums. Swear I've already heard some of these guitar riffs in other songs by them before, its way too familiar sounding. Mess sounds bored as well. Miss the groove this band used to bring.
|
| |
I think Mess has never sounded better, he's actually screaming with some force behind him unlike earlier records. His delivery has always been kind of monotone, but that's just his way of doing it. It's a good song but kind of safe as you'd expect out of the first single.
|
| |
Like I said, stagnation has kicked in imo, they're not expanding their sound anymore. From DBM to Deathstar was a huge difference, maybe an obvious one because of a new vocalist, but then from Deathstar to Happiness was an even larger difference. DBM and DBM II are also quite different despite having the same vocalist. I just don't hear anything like that comparing their last three records, it's as if there is little to no progression going on.
|
| |
Maybe they've just done all they can with their sound so they're just messing around. Acceptance speech felt like that.
|
| |
this site will never admit that they fucking love this band.
|
| |
Mingus isn't delivering those tasty tight grooves anymore! I mean maybe on a few tracks between the last two albums but nothing to really get ya goinnnnn, ya know? I get the whole "found our sound lets never change it" thing but it's so flat. Also mess is actually a lot less interesting than DBMII from a lyrical or vocal standpoint. Cool that he can push stuff out better, but it doesn't mesh with anything going on in the track
|
| |
Veldin, I was joking about mess' lyrics. they're clearly garbage. look no further than
What's it like to be a marble?
Did I get something in your eye?
She's a referee, and I'm lethally
Overdosed on pumpkin pie
|
| |
But those lyrics are funny. I like the pico de Gallo line here, rest is borng
|
| |
pretty boring
|
| |
''I get the whole "found our sound lets never change it" thing but it's so flat.''
I've never really seen them as a band with a 'particular sound'. Sure, there's a foundation, but they've taken that and put different layers of things on top of that on every album. Now those layers just seem very samey to me. Also agree on the lyrics, I don't think he'll ever top DBMII.
|
| |
Rules, but fuck yall Tillian killed it on the last album
|
| |
They haven't really varied their sound since Happiness to be honest, but I still like it
|
| |
I think the Tilian era has been reasonably varied. Acceptance Speech for better or for worse was an often over the top combination of post-hardcore with influences of pop and hip hop etc with Tilian sounding like a high pitched robot (which by no means is a good thing but it's certainly different), and Instant Gratification was just a way more concised record with an overall softer sound.
|
| |
Late but this song rocks.
|
| |
Good song
|
| |
On the band progressing-
For the first time in their decade long career the band is releasing a third consecutive album with the same singers and mostly the same members as a whole. Firstly, theyre at a point in their career where the experimentation is done; they found themselves finally. There's finally some consistency. Now they're working on perfecting this *established* sound, and if you look at the progression throughout the past two albums and now this song, it's pretty clear they are making headway.
|
| |
If it works off of what IG was, then I'll very much enjoy this record. I know IG wasn't very well received among some fans of the band but I thought it was great. Happiness is still my favorite, but IG is easily second best for me, followed closely by DBM2

best song of the year so far
|
| |
It's never seemed to me that Mess wrote lyrics for meaning, but rather for sound and flow, so they never bothered me. They can also be pretty hilarious. It almost sounds like he's scream-rapping sometimes.
I do miss the old "jazzy" DGD, though. Some of those old grooves were great.
|
| |
Mess did rando lyrics for DBM but he had some interview I think where he said they started meaning something after that.
Also death star has some HUGE ZINGERS from mess
|
| |
"It's never seemed to me that Mess wrote lyrics for meaning, but rather for sound and flow"
ding ding ding ding ding
|
| |
Song is great. Love Tillian's sound– reminds me of why I enjoyed Tides of Man.
Folks are right, I remember reading an interview where Mess said he really just writes stuff that flows well and goes with the groove. He's pretty much a modern day scat vocalist.
Also:
""White 21 is the maximum fun"
wait, huh?" is likely in reference either an old move called "Free, White and 21" or just a reference to the mid-1900s phrase that was somewhat popular.
|
| |
Seems like their sound changes up whenever a new clean vocalist comes on board, so I have a feeling this is going to be "the sound" for a while since I guess they aren't following their usual two album clean vocalist split. Must mean Tillian is meshing well with the gang.
On the plus side, it's not a bad sound... and it's nice to hear Tillian trying for once.
|

People who don't understand messedgod are so funny

al praise the messedgod

All praise Conner

all praise tylerslutgod

Decent song. Now that Messedgod has reached his peak with his screaming ability, would love to see him give more of a performance when live.
|
| |

I mean not really. Nothing since Happiness has been very good
|
| |
damn treb lemme hook you up with some dope ass happy pills
|

"so I have a feeling this is going to be "the sound" for a while since I guess they aren't following their usual two album clean vocalist split."
Welp, still hoping for Matt Geise, though it'll probably never happen.
|
| |
Not as good as the best songs on instant gratification but it's definitely enjoyable.
|
| |
*Almost nothing since DBMII has been very good.
You could probs make a dope ep from all the best tracks off the past few albums
|
| |
treb didn't you initially rate IG a 3.5...?
|
| |
People 180'd on IG so hard it's crazy. Wasn't that listed as one of the best albums of 2015 here on Sputnik? I personally loved it. Most post-hardcore fans I know of loved it at the time too. Now everytime I see DGD mentioned they talk about how bad it was. *shrug*.
|
| |
Fantastic. Will preorder soon! Love it!
|
| |
Some of the complaints about this are so entitled. It's extremely, extremely hard to innovate and expand your sound all the time. It's extremely hard to make one good album, let alone 3 or 4. If the band can't keep making *amazing* stuff after 6 albums, so what? That's perfectly natural.
All a musician has to make is one good song. That's all you can expect from them. Anything else is a bonus.
|
| |
i absolutely can't stand it when people criticise music or video games and the rabid fanboys just chalk it up as people "being entitled."
Jesus christ.
|
| |
I like IG and AS just not as much as their other albums. Actually I like a lot of songs off of both albums more than this new songs for some reason, idk this just sounds too familiar and the hooks aren't even that catchy like come on now
|
| |
if this hook isn't catchy idk what is tbh
|
| |
Agreed.
Happiness was my favorite, but I've pretty much been jamming to AS and IG consistently since they came out.
|
| |
death star was my fav until the tillian records came along
|
| |
I really liked IG, and this sounds rock solid
|
| |
No you're rock solid
|
| |
I also did change my opinion on IG as time went on. it's still a good album but after the hype died down I realized that it didn't match up to anything before tilian's arrival and it felt kinda stagnant. I was afraid it'd stay stagnant as tilian didn't seem to bring anything special to the table yet
now this song sounds pretty good and I'm excited for the album
|
| |
it's just been a downhill ride since acceptance speech
|
| |
rides downhill are more fun and exciting agreed
|
| |
true but they don't necessitate really bad production
|
| |
The production on IG was better than AS though?
|
| |
lol for me AS is banished in a far land because I barely consider it a dance gavin dance album anymore
that really just got worse for me over time and yeah IG had better production
|
| |
any time I see this band's name I can only think about that shitty Offspring song with the "dance, fucker, dance" chorus
|
| |
this album really has me worried though
|
| |
Great track. Did anyone hear that riff from Attack of the Dashing, Young and Bold in there?
|
| |
I for one did not 180 on IG. IG was dope, AS was garbage, but I do like the tracks they put on the live album because they dont have the garbage production.
|
| |
I really liked tillian back in the Tides of Man days, and haven't been able to get into DGD, but this song I played multiple times in a row. Fantastic instrumentals, and tillian sounds like the Empire Theory days. Looking forward to this album!
