Video has already been taken down, or so it seems.
Song is mediocre to me. I'm past tired of Opeth doing their retro prog thing.
| |
official lyric video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhqijfqecvA
| |
Is this the song that has a metal riff?
| |
The song isn't bad to me at all and everyone else seems disappointed.
| |
I thought the intro sounded like a parody, but it picked up after that. I'm digging the darker tone, really helps balance out the retro prog sound.
| |
The only thing worse than the song is the video
| |
Updated it, thanks.
| |
Sounds like Demon of the Fall.
| |
It rules
| |
Mikael is sucha Rush fanboy.
| |
Opeth needs to just break up so the majority of us can move on, 3rd album in a row that's going to be a disappointment.
| |
you dont have to listen to it if you dont want to...
| |
I don't really like this.
| |
listened to it 5 times now and i begin to love it. like all opeth songs this is a massive grower where you have to spend time with it to get to know its intricacies
| |
The song isn't bad, it's just boring. A lot of start-stop between parts, no real flow, nothing that really grabs the attention.
| |
wow this is even worse than anything off Pale Communion
these guys have hit a new low
| |
that chuggy riff is goofy, the prog rock parts are annoying, lyrics are lame and super recycled, band is dead to me.
| |
This track is more interesting than everything on Pale Communion at least, but that being said, it's still boring, it's not executed well and I don't think that I'll be bothered to listen to it again until the full album is available. Talk about playing it safe; very disappointing, and if I went to see an Opeth gig and they played a setlist comprised of songs like this, I'd be extremely annoyed that I couldn't get my money back.
I'm not even in the camp of fans that want them to go back to progressive metal. I feel like I'd be completely fine with them sticking to progressive rock if they actually tried to push the bar as opposed to just recycling shite from the late 60s-early 70s.
| |
Better than anything on their last 2 records.
| |
the first half is straight up terrible
| |
Overall the song is good, but I hope the rest of the album is a little more interesting and adventurous without being so stop-start with the dynamics. At least Mikael doesn't oversing as much on here as he did on most Pale Communion songs.
| |
lmao he undersings the shit out of this song
the vocals sound like an afterthought until the song finally opens up a bit in the second half
| |
I thought his singing sounded pretty dramatic, reminded me of Ghost and Candlemass at certain parts.
| |
Very boring.
| |
So average
| |
surprised i didn't doze off while listening to this
| |
I'm scared to listen to this
| |
Not bad, I hope the rest of the songs are better.
I wish they made a heavier album, it's been quite a while now.
| |
I'd be happy for a weirder exploration of the softer moments of Heritage for their new direction. It's clear that going heavy for this band now means simplistic 70s hard rock/metal, given the content of this song and PC.
| |
I don't think Mikael understand where the criticism of the recent albums comes from.
It's not because they're not metal, it's because they're not good.
| |
It really is an incredible step down from his former composition quality in the more metal days, but yeah, that has nothing to do with how metal those songs were.
| |
Wow the intro straight up sucked, but overall the song was okay at best.
| |
Could be a Ghost song. It's those satanic swedes.
| |
very bland song with a decent belt in the chorus to keep people awake. not a bad song objectively speaking, it just sucks that opeth made it.
| |
That was drek
| |
let the hate flow through you
| |
Wow this is pretty bad. Sounds like a lazily done stoner rock song.
| |
Boring.
| |
It was alright -- may sound better in the context of the rest of the album. That distorted riff in the verses almost sounds like fan service though, almost like how they said Watershed would have blast beats (in one part of one song lol)
| |
the idea that some simple chugs might be 'fan service' is literally mind blowing to me
who wants to hear that
| |
This is...not good.
| |
Cool riff, but I'm on the edge for a peak and I never received.
| |
"the idea that some simple chugs might be 'fan service' is literally mind blowing to me"
maybe what they say is true, maybe prog really destroys brain cells
i guess i'm fucked then
| |
Not feeling the intro or the lyrics, the rest is fine I guess but expectations were low to begin with
| |
opeth youtube commenters are a lot kinder than the average youtube commenter
| |
liking this a bit more the second time through
| |
well I miss the times when they managed to be versatile while having smooth transitions. Heritage was versatile but felt patchy. Pale Communion was smooth, but it was very samey. This feels pretty patchy again. It has some very cool parts though.
| |
Surprised no one has commented on that awful, muted guitar tone yet.
This seems like the sort of song that might just work with context in the album but so far I'm not feeling it much
| |
I really enjoy the progression in the new style. I already like it more than anything on Pale Communion and this is probably going to be the most average track on the album. I wonder if the more accessible sound of this song has anything to do with Nuclear Blast.
| |
first minute was just okay-ish, after that it got pretty good imo
| |
i really like the vocals, but the instrumentation is kind of boring. The muted guitar is just weak.
Who knows, maybe in the context of the album this will be better, or this is just the worst song. Cusp of Eternity was awful and Pale Communion ended up being just fine.
| |
Fuck me that was boring.
| |
@zamora at what point was CoE awful
| |
Intro was the fucking worst. Things got better once the guitars came in though. Akerfeldt's singing sounds amazing.
| |
@flug seriously? i mean is not the worst, but by opeth standards Cusp was really bland and boring. Compared to songs like Moon, River and Faith in Others, it's easy to consider it the worst song in that album.
| |
Song rules, even if Opeth released an opus track now it'd get no love on here cos of cynical 'old school' fans.
| |
Cusp of Eternity riff was way cooler than "chug-chug-chug-Dramatic Keyboard Strike!"
| |
low quality content
| |
pretty boring honestly
| |
im with ya plebby. also really liking the song. grew on me
| |
I'm all for their current style, but that didn't do much for me.
| |
this > cusp agreed
| |
"It's not because they're not metal, it's because they're not good."
Fucking nailed it. Damnation was a great album I thought because it still retained the darker atmosphere and the 'spirit' that made the heavier albums so good and unique. Heritage certainly wasn't original, but it was well executed, interesting, and had replay value. The last album had none of those things, and I fear that this album could end up being worse if this track is any indication of the album as a whole.
| |
I can accept people saying the chuggy riff is dull but how is this boring? Has at least 3 or 4 sections wedged into 6 minutes.
Better than anything on PC, at least this isn't as slow or 70's rehash.
| |
Old white guy music
| |
maybe im 75 at heart
| |
Girl, it's heteronormative music to maintain the systemic injustice of the patriarchy against minorities like gay ponies.
| |
"I can accept people saying the chuggy riff is dull but how is this boring? Has at least 3 or 4 sections wedged into 6 minutes."
has AT LEAST 3 or 4 sections SMASHED into a 6 minute song! It CANT be boring!
| |
This is pretty damn good I'm really surprised. Vocals in the chorus rule, sounds a bit like Alice in Chains. I actually really like this.
| |
meh. intro was horrific and the chugging guitars were whatever but I did enjoy the vox.
| |
man Opeth fans reallyyyy want to get something out of their new music
| |
lol that sucked
| |
song sucked
| |
Once again bringing nothing to the table except the leftovers
| |
Yeah, this sucks. I'm not gonna bother to try fooling myself this time.
| |
god no
| |
Pretty good, enjoyed it quite a lot! Can't wait for the album to be released.
| |
Had this been done by any unknown stoner band we'd be rating this a 2. So long Opeth, thanks for the memories.
| |
this is terrible
| |
I liked it.
| |
if this had been done by any unknown stoner band id give it even worse than what it gets for being opeth
| |
wow this is absolute trash
| |
'Had this been done by any unknown stoner band we'd be rating this a 2. So long Opeth, thanks for the memories.'
2 seems forgiving tbh
| |
Those calling this horrific need to wake up. It's not great, but it's far from bad.
This being said, the riffing is so simple, really did not expect anything like this.
Sounds more like a Doom Metal band trying to incorportate some 70s into their sound.
The worst part of the song is the mastering and I am relatively sure it is clipping.
| |
rasi your taste is so shit-poor you prolly find mayonnaise spicy
| |
ok fucking lol
| |
WAKE UP SHEEPLE
| |
that peacock looks cool tho. opeth always consistent with the art
| |
pale communion's art isnt that good brokofski
| |
yeah because their last albums art wasnt 0/10
| |
pale communion's artwork looks like it was made for a shitty interactive browser game
like, maybe if you click around on it you can find some clues
| |
yeah pale communion's art was pretty bad...
ok more than half of their album covers looked good
| |
pale communions art looks like a new shadows fall album cover nuff said
| |
"rasi your taste is so shit-poor you prolly find mayonnaise spicy "
hhahaha
top 5 sputsults
| |
Terrible.
| |
All of Opeth's album art is really good except for Pale Communion imo
Potsy always coming in with the quality insults lol
| |
mayh is the only opeth album i'd say had a good cover
| |
The Heritage art sucks too.
I love the Morningrise, MAYH, Still Life, BWP, Deliverance and Damnation covers. The GR and Watershed ones are OK, but the Heritage and PC ones are shit.
The new one rules, surprisingly.
| |
heritage art rules
| |
"I love the Morningrise, MAYH, Still Life, BWP, Deliverance and Damnation covers. The GR and Watershed ones are OK, but the new ones are shit."
I prolly should've said this earlier instead
| |
Pretty good song.
| |
Sorry guys but I think this kicks ass
| |
Yeah I'm digging it too.
| |
another dud by Opeth I'm reckoning
| |
No growls so it sucks
| |
I like it too, just hoping it's not an album highlight.
| |
new album gonna suck 2.3 calling it now
| |
They'll never have an album avg below Heritage again, shame cos Heritage was actually so awesome.
| |
I like this but watershed is my favourite Opeth album so obviously I'm a spaz
| |
| |
worst song ive heard by them. not terrible, just.. not interesting at all
| |
Don't see how people are like "WORST SONG EVER", I mean it might not be their best but I don't see how its awful.
| |
"Sounds like a lazily done stoner rock song." [2]
Nailed it.
| |
[3]
| |
"Sounds like a lazily done stoner rock song."
I can kind of get behind that too though.
| |
the fuck, where's that girl singer and the shitty nu-metal parts
| |
Opted news threads are always gold here
| |
Ok wow
I'm kinda floored with how shit this is. Thing sounded rudimentary af and that bass tone sounds like a morbidly obese fucker waddling down the street.
| |
Cos stoner rock has winding keyboard intros agreed.
The nuclear blast production is the worst thing about this, easily.
| |
another prog yawn..
shit i really wanted a Scorpions/Thin Lizzy influenced album
| |
actually digging this a lot now
| |
"Cos stoner rock has winding keyboard intros agreed."
Lol really dude? Obviously they're referring to the other 90% of the song with that comparison.
| |
I kept waiting for something interesting. then it ended.
| |
at least the drumming's good
| |
I actually kinda dig this
| |
As much as I like the song, virtually everything on Heritage buries it.
| |
This is actually a pretty fucking fun song imo. I don't get why everyone is hating on it. It's better than most of Heritage
| |
Heritage was boring as semi-dry paint
| |
Agreed so hard. Better than most of PC too.
| |
The chugging riff is pretty boring and the production doesn't do it any favors. Cusp of Eternity grew on me though, so maybe this one will too
| |
Mastodon meets Opeth.
| |
That was awful.
| |
hahahahah what the heck was that intro?
| |
Cool, that's what it was.
| |
ok mr. 'No growls so it sucks'
| |
proof that most prog is bad right here.
| |
"Cusp of Eternity riff was way cooler than "chug-chug-chug-Dramatic Keyboard Strike!""
that was literally CoE as well tho lol
| |
I honestly lol'd at the riff in the verse
| |
well this is my first time listening to opeth and i gotta say quality band.
| |
I'm trying to actually think if I dislike any Opeth song, give me a minute...
| |
you literally have 10 of their albums 5d so im going to answer for you and say 'no'
| |
No no, just gimme a second...
*scrawls through discog*
| |
starts with a W and ends with reath
:D
| |
holy shit he does literally have 10 opeth 5's
| |
Na Wreath jams hard.
I had PC 5'd too Sim but the mods wouldn't allow such a thing to happen.
| |
Bro wreath rules you fucking cray bud?
| |
Fuck ye MO
| |
songs good
| |
Well that... sucked.
Intro riff was terrible, verse riff was some basic sludge/post metal shit. Production really doesn't suit their sound either, sounds compressed to shit.
| |
well... it's not good...
| |
Lol.
Even Mikael described this track as 'meat and potato', hopefully the rest of the album will take more risks.
| |
oh there's meat and potato in it alright
| |
Listening to the Deliverance again now and I do miss those winding riffs Mike used to write with Lindgren, ahhhh its next level stuff.
| |
being a pleb is colloquial for being lame or uninformed at something sooooo
| |
That would describe me perfectly tbh
| |
its also colloquial for 5ing 10 opeth albums.
| |
Damn, the English dictionary knows me to a T, huh?
| |
It's a pleb thing man.
| |
Cant imagine how their other stuff could be 5/5 material
yeah i bet you can't
| |
BWP is rated lower than most of their other albums for me so it's possible.
| |
"Blackwater Park is a 3.5. Cant imagine how their other stuff could be 5/5 material"
thats right alc, fight the hivemind. death to opeth.
| |
damn, you got him
| |
"Blackwater Park is a 3.5. Cant imagine how their other stuff could be 5/5 material"
jam morningrise
| |
man fk this song
this is why progressive music is actually regressive
| |
cant we all get along guys c:
| |
"DEATH TO REGRESSIVE LEFTISTS! DEATH TO FEMINISTS! DEATH TO MICHELLE! DEATH TO HILLARY! "
but I didn't say any of that
I got to say, that is the evilest peacock I have ever seen
| |
progressive music is fine when its not relying on its PROG-ness as a gimmick
| |
Prog is fine when it isn't complete bullshit and has a direction and meaning
| |
Terrible Song, so sad tbh
| |
thats an aggressive way of putting it but yeah @full
| |
i dont believe the song is lacking in direction but it just feels hollow, like i can never see myself returning to it with bated breath. The problem the band is facing for me is not really familiarity but they're losing an emotional grip i held while listening to past records
| |
Oh, I actually really loved the song
| |
im honestly jealous, i wish i can still get pumped for an opeth release but i just cant. I dont care about the no growls thing, i just think my interest has dwindled with time and my preferences changed
| |
I see, guess you just grew out of them.
| |
i played the crap out of opeth in high school
don't ever see myself returning to them ever again tbh
| |
that's a shame, hope cuz it's not cuz of school associations
| |
Could've done without the intro, but this is the first song I've been interested in since they changed directions. Will probs check this out.
| |
its funny cause i cant really say i grew out of them. Like myst i hardly return to them anymore but when i do i always enjoy it. So i definitely still dig them but i think the music ive been listening to/searching for lately is so different that i just harldy think about prog metal at all anymore
| |
Maybe you'll eventually come in full circle and be into prog metal again, who knows
| |
I haven't listened to Opeth since Ghost Reveries. The hell happened?
| |
possibly? time will tell
new TDEP was tight tho
| |
what? I had great school associations.
I mean I'm sure I'd still enjoy MAYH and Morningrise but I just haven't felt like listening to them in like 5 years and don't really see that changing anytime soon.
| |
Mikael became obsessed with progressive rock
| |
oh boy
thought i was listening to mastodon when that riff came in
got bored of the riff by the time the song was halfway done
| |
mike definitely needs to lay off the rush cds
i have a feeling this is their second to last album, idk why
| |
Ok, that was boring.
| |
[2]
| |
I'm not sure how I feel about this track. I don't hate it, but it leaves something to be desired. I suppose I'll have to listen to the whole album before I can properly like or dislike this song.
| |
I'm confused.
| |
i feel like ive never watched a lyric video and went, wow that was awesome
| |
9/10 times they make me cringe and the other 1/10 its just there and doesn't do anything for the song, i really wish this fad would end
| |
this one didnt bother me too much actually. djently metalcore lyric videos tho? oooo boy...
| |
"metalcore lyric videos" are in a whole different league of awfulness compared to any other form of media.
| |
absolute garbage this shit should have ended after heritage they have put out nothing of value since watershed
| |
that intro is awful
| |
But so proggy and 70s maaaaaan
| |
Some of you guys make no sense to me....
Opinions and all, but I'm banking on this being better than the last 2 albums. Could be wrong of course, but guess we'll see.
| |
yeah could easily be better than PC. prog opeth isnt completely bad as Heritage already proved
| |
"lyrics are laughably bad and video is embarrassing."
woah, ala with a correct opinion.
they grow up so fast!
| |
this is.. yikes
| |
we should all just listen to the new warpaint song instead
| |
I started cracking up when I heard the intro
| |
Uh well this is I mean it's, you know it's like...
Fuck. This is pretty not good.
| |
Mediocrepeth.
| |
Ok, I've checked this out, and now I'll go listen to everything this band released up to Damnation.
| |
Am I the only one who likes the intro?
| |
do you like the part where the intro just ends and it's like 'fuck it I guess the song starts now'
so they go into just straight up quarter note chugs
| |
mopeth
| |
more like, NOPEth
| |
"The nuclear blast production is the worst thing about this, easily."
Agreed, production seems to be the weak link... Can't understand the heavy bashing going on here though, the song rules. Looking forward to hearing it in the context of the album.
| |
still think the song rules. and whats wrong with the production u fuckwits. its getting ridiculous slowly but surely
| |
it awful
| |
"still think the song rules. and whats wrong with the production u fuckwits. its getting ridiculous slowly but surely"
Song's pretty good agreed, but production sounds a bit muddy and dull to me.
| |
Sounds like an Opeth cover band, and not a particularly good one.
| |
its awful yea
| |
That intro though, wtf
| |
The new Anciients song is much better.
| |
"do you like the part where the intro just ends and it's like 'fuck it I guess the song starts now'
so they go into just straight up quarter note chugs"
No, the transition isn't very smooth
| |
Yeah new Anciients slays
I like this one even if I think there is something lacking in the end
| |
Not sure this song does anything for me that Watershed doesn't.
Does Opeth have any more room to innovate? The trend since Watershed likely says no.
| |
Watershed rules. Heritage is p good. PC was bleh and hopefully the album is better than this song. The over-singing is getting worse with every album. It's like his trying to sing above his ability.
Oh well, new meshuggah will slay
| |
pretty cool Ghost song
i liked it better than anything since watershed though if that means anything
| |
"do you like the part where the intro just ends and it's like 'fuck it I guess the song starts now'
so they go into just straight up quarter note chugs"
That's the worst part of the whole song tbh.
| |
"pretty cool Ghost song"
They definitely came to mind for me as well. Too bad Ghost shits all over this.
| |
Also surprised no one has mentioned how awful the lyrics are
| |
Maybe it fits to the album, who knows
| |
First listen I was like: WTF?
Second listen I was like: Well, this is not THAT bad after all
Third listen I was like: Okay, I will admit this is pretty good
Not BWP or Still Life level, but on par with Heritage for sure.
| |
I wonder if Akerfeldt just refuses to use growls because it doesn't fit the current state of mind in songwriting or just as a stubborn statement.
| |
It's most definitely the former
| |
dunno why we need to demand growls from aker. thats just whiny entitlement at that point. i do think its alright to demand songwriting that isnt a joke, however.
| |
"Also surprised no one has mentioned how awful the lyrics are"
a lot of people have actually...
| |
i do think its alright to demand songwriting that isnt a joke [2]
I think the majority of users on this site are all in the same boat. Anyone with an open mind doesn't expect Opeth to write a metal record. Anathema, Katatonia, Ulver, are all perfect examples of bands who transitioned from metal into unexpected genres, and were fully capable of writing thoughtful respectable music. It doesn't have to be metal, it just has to be good.
| |
I like both the old and the new Opeth as well, but I admit their current stuff take a lot more listen to fully hit their mark. Song is pretty sweet.
| |
Still miss Akerfeldt's growls though, he's got some of the best ones.
| |
Agreed on both counts man.
| |
Finally listened to this and it was so boring. The only thing more boring then the actual song is the guitar tone.
Cusp of Eternity > This
| |
"Still miss Akerfeldt's growls though, he's got some of the best ones."
Ok I read this and for a sec I thought Mikael's wife was singing on this somewhere
| |
DungeonBoy hit the nail on the head.
| |
it's not that bad bitches
| |
The first minute of this song is absolute garbage, and honestly sounds midi. Whatever retro influence they were going for completely backfired there. The actual guitar tone throughout the song is paper thin; the arrangements are boring bar a few lines in the last two minutes of the song, the vocals are weak, the lyrics are okay.
Hard 1.5/5. Is this really the same band that made Blackwater Park?
| |
it's not that bad bitches [2]
| |
It's that bad bitches [9001]
| |
It's fun how every two years after Watershed it's become a trend to hate on Opeth.
| |
which is the last one?
| |
Drapery Falls I think
| |
geeez, get over it, they do not play progressive death metal anymore, they play retro prog now....if you do not like retro prog, nothing wrong with you but just move on and listen to other bands....what is the big deal here ?
| |
The really good one being Leper Affinity and the good one Bleak I guess? Title song is also very good imo.
| |
Drapery Falls is the most underrated song on BWP.
| |
how can that reprise of the intro at the end not give you goosebumps? it's one of my favorite moments in music
| |
I see many people wanting Opeth to continue with another name, meaning they would stop existing as a band. They also claim that Opeth are not what they used to be, i.e. Opeth are no more anyway. So, the only thing that matters is if the same people use a certain name or not? Like ''Opeth'' is their invention and they don't want the name and heritage (pun not intended) being disgraced (which, imho, it's not).
| |
well, the project Opeth as a whole is kind of a piece of art. I think the way they went from Orchid to Watershed can be understood as an uninterrupted creative path. Heritage and Pale Communion seem out of place in the whole body of work. They seem like the start of a new project imo, so I kinda agree with those people.
| |
dirge is one of my favorite songs on bwp
| |
The minimalistic concept is interesting but the songwriting is nothing out of the ordinary. Mikael is swimming in stagnant waters.
| |
I think you meant drowning.
| |
@rikroach nah boi heritage and PC were comprehensible follow ups to watershed.
| |
I don't hate this song because they switched genres.
I hate this song because it's a poorly written, poorly produced sack of shit.
| |
im still salty af about the genre switch
| |
So this is different. Kind of boring upon the first listen. Will obviously need more to appreciate it more. But after this, my expectations have fallen for the new album
| |
"nah boi heritage and PC were comprehensible follow ups to watershed."
I agree that PC follows heritage quite comprehensibly, but Heritage is totally different from Watershed imo. tbh, PC has more in common with Watershed than Heritage does.
| |
I'm disappointed in how many people are apathetic to or unimpressed by this track. New album is gonna slay, definitely will be better than Heritage and heavier than Pale Communion.
Prediction 3.8/5

geeez, get over it, they do not play progressive death metal anymore, they play retro prog now....if you do not like retro prog, nothing wrong with you but just move on and listen to other bands....what is the big deal here ?
Most people don't even care about the genre, they just want quality music.
| |
I like this more than just about everything on Pale Communion or even Heritage, and I'm still not all that excited for the album
| |
ye man GET OVER IT
| |
whoa, kimm sighting
| |
Who's kimm?
| |
People actually care about growls? Fuck the growls. They can't safe goofy prog worship.
| |
Yeah the growling isn't the issue, the songwriting is. It feels too safe, especially compared to old school opeth.
| |
Been bored of these guys sice Watershed so h

I don't know what you guys are hearing, but after three listens, I actually love it. I also think I am the only one who likes the intro. It's got a trippy kind of vibe to it and I think it's pretty cool how it leads into the heavy riff. Definitely looking forward to hearing the rest of the album.
| |
we're hearing pretty much what you're hearing, except instead of a trippy vibe, we're getting a horrible musical anachronism followed by just shit honestly
| |
LOLOOLOL
srsly wtf is this
| |
My god the intro is god damn awful. Such a bad song, was pretty excited after the teases and studio report. On first listen this makes CoE sound like a masterpiece. Hopefully it will grow on me? I dunno..
| |
COE had fredrik killing it guitar.
| |
ultimate-guitar users are in love with this song....
| |
and just listened to this for a 2nd time. Its even worse than I remember.
| |
Yeah, gave it another listen and the intro is just laughable. Can't think of any worse intro off the top of my head.
If you guys want some laughs head to /r/opeth, the fanboyism is out of control. One guy was told "shut the fuck up and calm your tits" when he criticized the song lol.
| |
The stringy bearded overweight faux prog lover can be vicious when threatened
| |
wait this isnt even that bad wtf. this is better than most of PC tbh
| |
It's really poor.
| |
Heritage was sort of like shit on toast: I wouldn't want to eat it because it's shit on toast—but at least there's some toast there, so there's sort of a redeeming quality underneath the shit. Pale Communion shocked me with how good it was. In fact, I consider it one of my top 5 Opeth albums of all time. This was . . . I'm really not sure. Lyrically, it was bland and a huge step backward for Akerfeldt, whose work is usually cryptically poetic. The songwriting was stripped down and repetitive, without any distinguishing flourishes like the oustanding cymbal work in "Eternal Rains Will Come." And yet I didn't hate it. I'm just not very impressed.
At this point I think it's safe to assume that we'll never see Opeth release another true metal album, which is more than a little heartbreaking. But I can appreciate them for what they've become as long as they keep the quality up. "Sorceress" isn't inspiring much faith at the moment.
| |
PC was way safe given the genre they want to play in these days, Heritage had weird as shit parts and although some may disagree, the production was awesome.
| |
yea production was awesome, and so was the rest of the album. PC was Heritage without the organic production and less interesting songs
| |

shit toast
| |
"Heritage was sort of like shit on toast: I wouldn't want to eat it because it's shit on toast—but at least there's some toast there, so there's sort of a redeeming quality underneath the shit. "
This is the longest sentence I've ever read on the subject of shit on toast.
| |
"Mikael Akerfeldt should stop with this soft boring ass crap and go back to growling for BLOODBATH."
nah, did you listen to that live concert of theirs at wacken from like '13/14? he sounded absolutely awful. his growls are done, he's been slowly picking them back up just for what he needs for Opeth performances, but strictly growling is a no go anymore
| |
Ye he's tolerable/pretty good nowadays but unless he seriously sits down Swano and practices with him then the growls will never make a full comeback.
| |
damn has he really lost his growls that much? It's hard to believe their last metal album came out 8 years ago now...
| |
Considering the majority of their fans were in it for the metal aspects, not the 70's prog, I doubt this type of music will sustain them for very long.
| |
If I paid money for a ticket to see a live show full of songs from Pale Communion and Heritage, I'd seriously probably cry.
| |
Been there before man, they played a couple of the older slow songs like Windowpane and Face of Melinda which was sweet, rest was mostly Heritage, total snooze fest. Katatonia opened and Opeth just couldn't follow with that setlist.
| |
why are they still doing this throwback prog bs
| |
they haven't been the same since lopez left
| |
don't forget lindgren
| |
The first time I listened to it, I really didn`t like it. After a while it grew on me. I can`t wait tell the album is released.
| |
double-faced like any clinton
| |
Clintons views "evolved"
| |
lol
| |
the organ at the start is tryin way too hard to be prog
and the low ass tunin aint fittin that hard damn i wanted to dig this turd
| |
I think the fact that they overuse keyboards is what makes most people drift away from them. Heritage hadn't much of them, and it is highly regarded. Wit PC they created a new (sic) sound with lush keyboards that gave them the true retro feeling, while stripping them of their old, darker character.
| |
So many wrong opinions on here its laughable. We literally have 8 albums worth of progressive metal from them. Song isn't that bad, I thought it was a fun take on their stylistic shift... oh wait I'm in a room full of elitists that can't take fun in music seriously

it´s prog, wake up,

wake up
song is superb
| |
dear Opeth, please stuck in 2001
---------
"progress of progressive band not allowed"
- Opeth "fans"
| |
concurred!
| |
@stefan77: i don't know, the more annoying type of Opeth fans are those who think that people really just don't want them to change. Truth is, most don't have a problem with that, they just don't want them to sound like they didn't know what they are doing. And that's kinda the case here.
| |
disconcurred
| |
Opeth prog is like Korn dubstep
| |
as in... they are both awful XD
| |
wow no now you're going overboard
| |
Fuck that was mean.
| |
first minute is kinda cringe but it's good after that tho
| |
worst song ever made agreed
| |
yea shut your whore mouth
| |
Intro sounds like super mariopeth
| |
well that worked fine in Lotus Eater so that's not the problem.
| |
Maybe you guys are giving up too quickly? I wasn't really into it at the start but it grew on me a lot.
| |
same here. grew a lot
| |
It's grown off of me.
I don't care how much of a generic metalhead I sound like, bring the growls and metals back.
| |
blowpeth
| |
I'm a sinner
And I worship eeeevil
| |
"Intro sounds like super mariopeth"
for real. mustve had the supernintendo on while recording that shit.
| |
I kind of agree with Gmork89. The prog stuff is nice. But it's 3 albums now doing the same thing. I think it's a good time to go back to something a bit heavier. Doesn't have to be extremely heavy like MAYH. Could be a hybrid like GR and WS were.
Opeth have so much talent but they're bottle-necking themselves. They work as a progressive rock outfit, but they excel as a metal band. My fear is they've become complacent in their style, because it's probably easier and less taxing to write and perform these types of songs but it's as if they keep missing an open goal album after album.
| |
Well said. They have the potential to make a mindblowing progmetal album, but instead we get this mediocre style exercise.
| |
It's like.. for fuck sake... I've already heard enough Steven Wilson and King Crimson in my life. Opeth out of all bands doesn't need to be constantly imitating them.
| |
anyone trying to imitate steven wilson needs to reconsider their career choices.
| |
homeboy performs live in his bare feet. he can't be trusted.

"Opeth out of all bands"
explain "out of all bands" please.

one part of me really likes this piece of shit
| |
Because it's a piece of shit that still has bits of corn in it
| |
song has grown on me heaps. got the flac version which sounds nice too. some dude on reddit said this is the worst song so im pretty keen to hear what else is in store
| |
how have that guy heard anything else off of this?
| |
Akerfeldt should have just made a prog side project and either kept Opeth as it is, or just stopped it altogether.
| |
u still butthurt?
goddamn
| |
on here https://www.reddit.com/r/Opeth/comments/4xb160/got_an_early_copy_of_sorceress_my_impressions_ask/
| |
good read
| |
the hype is up again
| |
Was the butthurt question to me?
If so, yeah probably a little.
Impressions sound like another snoozer.
| |
Dam that I'm not a fan of that music video's repetitiveness
| |
It's really not that bad.
| |
Digging the vocals and the Alice in Chains vibes.

song is so bad you people are horrid
| |
one of the best things about current opeth are the dynamics.
opposed to the loudness war its ointment for my ears.
| |
it's not the worst song on the history of mankind of course, it's just painfully underwhelming
| |
Song is a grower. First I liked it, then I hated it (because I iverplayed it) and now I love it.
| |
Flug bro this song is loud af though
Heritage sounds great but PC and this song really don't.
| |
PC sounded awesome bro
| |
it's all shit after watershed which was their magnum opus
| |
tastepolice

Best new username I've seen in a while
| |
@KILL I find it's a very sterile production compared to Heritage, which was super warm and dynamic. It's not horrible like this but it is a step down
| |
PC was even more dynamic than heritage but it def sounded more modern than heritage, although heritage tried too hard to sound retro
| |
Hmm not what I remember but I'll have to recheck both, it's been a while
| |
keep forgetting how garbage that intro is wow
| |
Keep relistening to this because some poster has seen the light and I also want to see the light.
I can't see the light. Yet.
| |
Where are the br33s?
| |
There is no light. Only the endless grey monotony of mediocrity.
| |
u want piggys yuri?
| |
no roar, its bad song
pls Mikael, roar in second single
| |
how dumb are you really tho, stefan?
| |
the question is, how troll is he?
| |
The track still rulez pretty hard. Already preordered the album. 30 days to go m/
| |
song is still a 1/5
| |
For me it's probably at 3.8/5 atm
| |
I agree no roars equil bad album

New track:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kfpnwk-DXrA
| |
anyone else feel like he's over-singing this one?
| |
too much lyrics
| |
Second single is better but I miss his growls...
| |
attend a concert then jeez
| |
The new single is outstanding, truly blissful.
| |
so far, i feel the songs from the new album got a more colourful feel to it. pale communion was rather pale : )
| |
That's definitely true. I feel like it's going to be a more dynamic album than PC. Might not be as consistent, though.
| |
I find the new one truly disappointing. I don't even care to give it a second listen, contrary to the first one, which was (imo) much more interesting. And yes, he does oversing.
| |
I don't even know what oversinging is at this point tbh
Vox on the new one don't bother me at all
| |
Will O The Wisp is indeed too Jethro Tull-y. Not a good thing, not a bad thing either. Vox are ok.
| |
It's got that 'third song on the single'-vibe.
| |
Jesus CHRIST the new song is boring. There's not even any pretense about it anymore, they're just straight up covering different classic prog acts.
| |
yea but most of their fans havent heard the originals they rip so its fine
| |
they're like the musical equivalent of those televangelists that prey on old people and people living on a fixed income
| |
wow this album gonna be a hard 2
| |
Pleasant track.
| |
its like a sudden switch from 'alright' to 'abysmal' from the drum straight into the first few keys.
| |
I like the track but I feel like they've been regressing since Heritage.
That album proved Opeth could still prog but keep it unmistakably Opeth still.
PC went through the motions and these 2 singles haven't displayed the same flamboyance and fluidity Heritage had.
| |
spot on Pleb
| |
Heritage was fantastic but pretty disjointed, I think they can still make something just as good if they wanted to.
Will O The Wisp is very pleasant and reminds me of Harvest. There's still almost an hour of the album we haven't heard yet, so there's still no real way of knowing how it's going to turn out. The song Sorceress was a mess, sure, but it had some cool parts and the online review for the album said it was the weakest song at least.
| |
The new song sounds like a Jethro Tull song. I'm really liking it and it's much better than the last single, but with that being said, there's no trace of Opeth or originality left in their music. The vocals even sound like a blatant imitation of Ian Anderson.
| |
watershed was the last good thing this band did
| |
Wow. What a return to form!
| |
wow fuck you dude.
| |
best new music
| |
Totally forgot this existed
Thanks for reminding me, assholes
| |
LMAO
