People are quick to write this off because it doesn't have the same intrigue, or underground appeal as they would perceive a similar song by a far more obscure band to supposedly have. Regardless, I reckon this is kinda cool - despite being pretty juvenile. At some point or another people have got to stop reducing Miley Cyrus' music to an attempt to shake her Disney persona - she's experimenting with different sounds and, at the very least, I reckon that's pretty commendable.

I can understand if you dislike the song, and Matt assuming your hate stems from her being weird to kill her Disney persona is baseless. But this is pretty tame compared to some music released in the past few years. Is the video disgusting? Yeah, a lot, but remove the video and all you have is an uninteresting track (or a good track, depending on what you think) and nothing worthy of anything else.

Let me make this clear, I never asserted that myth's hate stems from her previous persona, in fact, I based the majority of my original comment on Youtube responses, in which people EXPLICITLY said her hyper-sexuality was merely her attempting to shake her disney image.

Man, please stop with the hyperbole, it just detracts from your argument. Few things about music are objective. One, I could say is nearly objective though, is that this is NOT musak - seriously. Again, "utterly abominable", spare us. And let's be honest, you don't pity her, nor should you even reasonably find yourself in a position where you pity a successful pop singer simply because you deem her behaviour to be offensive to your stringently conservative conscience.

I probably failed to make this explicit in my original post, but the point I was making is that Cyrus' experimentation is very good, for a few reasons. The foremost is that it is quite refreshing to see someone in her position of musical power/stardom do something that is so upsetting to traditional, and what have become rather mundane, pop sensibilities. I made the point that her attempt was juvenile, but that's not really so bad. I, for one, love the fact that Miley Cyrus is so unabashedly sexual (I hope that doesn't come across as perverted haha). The ability she has to make audiences squirm in their seats - you included - is akin to other radical musical movements over the last century or so (think disapproving moms during the punk wave, think of their reductionist arguments that are remarkably akin to yours).

This is going to be the last comment I'll write on this thread, as I think you jump into conclusions more easily than a kangaroo can jump at all.

First. Yeah, this is not muzak. This is something coming from her heart. Yeah, of course, she's not into the money, she does what she wants, not following 'orders' from producers and whatnot. Originality, passion and artistic anxiety.
She's so artistic and puts value in her music, she doesn't do anything just to draw attention.

Yep, right, cos once a person is known by many people and makes money from that, they no longer can cause negative emotions to others. They are pitch perfect and money equals no problems.

Third. Comparing this video and her career as a liberatic act that tries to offend the norms of society and conservatives (like me, as you said), the same way Punk did. Well, I could claim I'm not conservative (maybe even less than you are) but that's not the point, is it? The point is that, while Punk had a true message to send, this video alone can only say ''Yeah, I like cum stains all over my face. Take that society!''
