lol
| |
well i listened to the first 40 seconds
| |
Track sounds very formulaic, it could be just me though.
| |
"As the awaitance for their upcoming album Pale Communion will finally come to an end on August 26"
Can't help but feel this might contain a little sarcasm ;)
| |
^^^No sarcasm here, just tried to write something different from what I usually write on news items.
| |
Already heard the whole album 20 times weeks ago so ok cool
| |
Formulaic? lol go home Voivod, you're drunk.
| |
Pretty old, but it's nice to hear the song at its true sound quality. Start is still oddly abrupt
| |
sounds dated
| |
sounds bad
| |
Sounds like you should stfu
| |
the opeth fanboyism is strong
| |
do they have an album where the guy doesnt sing
| |
That awkward moment when the full album has been leaked for a few weeks......
| |
Best band ever tbh.
Na Yak, just use audacity to get rid of em.
| |
that awkward moment when the full album sounds like an also-ran band of the Italian prog scene 40 years ago
| |
No way ExplosiveOranges? I would've never guessed from those 306 ratings it already has
| |
"That awkward moment when the full album has been leaked for a few weeks......"
Hence why I thought the article's intro was sarcasm.
Also yeah, Voivod I can't really tell which "formula" you're referring to here.
| |
Can't wait to hear the album!!
| |
Well, maybe Mikael doesn't know about- Nah, who am I kidding. They're just gonna have to bullshit through the next 18 days.
| |
"I think opeth went thru an opeth phase just like everyone else and they got over it too"
| |
Not super-hot on this, but still better than the majority of Heritage.
| |
Formulaic? lol go home Voivod, you're drunk.
Also yeah, Voivod I can't really tell which "formula" you're referring to here.
There's better prog rock in the underground.
| |
its an okay song. the album as a whole is solid though.
| |
"There's tons of better prog rock in the underground."
That has nothing to do with it being formulaic or not though.
| |
prog pretty much became formulaic in the late 70s, see elp
| |
The formulaic thing is relevant to the ability of a band in sounding fresh, even through its music is nothing new under the sun.
| |
m/
| |
implying
| |
yikes
| |
prog pretty much became formulaic in the late 70s, see elp ya 4 sure fantastic damage was a centaur of pop and art that walked with a limp but has a heart of gold
| |
this band any good?
| |
don't know never heard of them
| |
boring zzzzz
| |
heritage is better than this album
| |
heritage is better [2]
| |
This song alone is better than Heritage. It's also the best on the album IMO, so yeah
| |
"There's tons of better prog rock in the underground."
Underground as in basement?
No thx m8
| |
Plenty of retards in this thread
| |
This song is a grower big time
| |
lol, funny how i feel the first half of 'River' is so bad it sounds like a Darius Rucker power ballad. Goblin is plain and doesn't really bring anything new on the table. Cusp of Eternity sounds like a Porcupine Tree rip off imo and has zero Opethian flair etc.
Yeah there are some good songs on there (like this one) , but the album feels disjointed overall.
| |
Wouldn't be an Opeth thread if there weren't, Salad.
| |
Did Mikael just decide to stop writing great music or what. Fuck this band.
| |
I remember when I liked Opeth.
| |
Why listen to new Opeth when you can just listen to my arms, your hearse
| |
i second that vin

I tried figuring out why I really dislike listening to this album. Certainly I like the drums, and the bass. Also it IS more cohesive than Hertiage, but... It's Mikael. I hate the lyrics and the vocal style on this album. It's just so damn tacky. Wow, to think once upon a time he was the best band member. Take this album and (-) Mikael. It's an above average prog album. Now, the vocals have him oversinging in so many parts. I like parts of river and voice of treason, but both are brought down by the subject matter Mikael chooses. It's my opinion that heritage and this are not far off lyrically. Both about loss, god, grief, redemption, blah blah blah. Certainly not his forte. I didn't mind them in heritage because there was songs like folklore, haxprocess, and lines in my hand. "Highlights" of this album would be voice of treason, and maybe faith in others. Steve Wilson calls that song the best thing opeth has ever done. Frankly it's par for opeth. Now.. I certainly sound like I hate the record, but I don't this is just one of those cases where one or two aspects of the record kill the quality of the rest of the album.
| |
I'm not against progpeth, but if Mikael follows this path, count me out.
| |
That intro sounded like shit. Otherwise, the song is pretty decent, but I prefer the old style of Opeth rather than this new venture into prog rock.
Mikael actually said this in response to why they changed their style : I think for a band called metal we have balls. It’s supposed to be rebellious music but I see little rebellion, just people raking in money putting out the same shit out over and over. A lot of bands actually don’t like that stuff and would want other influences in their music. But they are too afraid to fuck up their career.
I could have sworn that their past albums were progressive enough to not have to rebel against metal....apparently I'm wrong.
| |
;_;
| |
This is definitely my favourite from the new album. Awesome track.

jesus christ
| |
Have you read the lyrics to any Opeth record? It's not like these are new themes or anything.
I half agree, and I definitely agree with the vocals for the most part. It doesn't ruin it for me though since the music and
instrumentation are great (imo).
| |
ugh boring just like this whole album
| |
> As the wait for Opeth's upcoming album Pale Communion finally begins to draw to an end
> 307 ratings
| |
If the purpose of releasing a single is to promote an album, so that people go out and buy it, I'd say this has failed.
| |
Did Mikael just decide to stop writing great music or what. Fuck this band.
Go jam Hemispheres or something, Wizard.
| |

omg this is the album
| |
Ye, that paragraph is a load of shite.
| |
is it though?
| |
This song sucks. Not even because there aren't growls anymore, but because this is just straight up badly done prog rock. What the hell Opeth, you're better than this.
| |
@yourgod Yes, it is.
| |
can we please get over opeth? that would be really cool.
| |
Go jam Hemispheres or something, Wizard.
Would rather jam King Crimson over terrible Geddy voice.
| |
You are insufferable, sweet jesus!
| |
even i know this leaked already wtf
| |
yea but leaked isn't official so this article is still fine
| |
So this is pretty much Heritage Part 2?
| |
song rules
| |
Ok haven't listened to a single song off of this album yet because Heritage was meh but I'm getting mixed signals. Why does everyone seem to dislike it but it's got nearly a 4 average?
| |
I like this a lot more than Heritage, which I pretty much gave up on after about 5 listens. It's darker than Heritage and actually sounds like an Opeth album. That may be why. Also haters gonna hate on the nonexistent death metal vocals. You really should check it out even if you didn't like Heritage.
| |
I liked heritage but def like this better. Sounds a lot more focused and less noodly for one which makes it more memorable. Its also darker and even more emotional I'd say although its true that mikael kind of overdoes some parts singing wise
| |
Best song on the album with the second track. Rest is kinda boring and generic.
| |
I hate the production on this, honestly. It feels so... forced and unnatural, almost like all the instruments are digital, you know? This thing was released in '69, yet its production feels WAY more vibrant and alive to me:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9228-Imm04U
I wasn't looking forward to this new album anyway. After Heritage I wasn't holding out much hope.
| |
So many butthurt ppl in here.
| |
I think that bit about his vocals being the reason for not liking the album has some merit. I also can't tack down exactly why none of this has clicked with me... except for maybe the vocals. I don't know how or why, but they're just not as good as they were on previous releases. His voice on Ghost Reveries is wonderful, but here it just bothers me.
That and Opeth were interesting because of the light/heavy contrasts in their music, and this album doesn't really feature that. If the next album goes back to metal riffing + prog rock then it should be more enjoyable. But I doubt that'll happen ;_;
