Help fund Ne Obliviscaris [Updated]
2014-06-30 by Lloyd | 48 Comments

Australian progressive metal up-and-comers Ne Obliviscaris have launched a crowdfunding campaign in support of an upcoming world tour and exclusive EP.
Pledging will be open for 60 days, with the target set at $40,000 AUD.

http://www.pozible.com/project/183510

According to the band:
"We have lined up a world tour taking in Europe, UK, North America, Australia, India, Japan, China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan, South East Asia and more, but we need your help to make all these shows become a reality."

Ne Obliviscaris have also announced an exclusive as-yet-untitled 3-song EP (approx. 25 minutes worth of material), featuring songs written prior to the release of debut album Portal of I. According to violinist and clean vocalist Tim Charles, some of these songs have never even been performed live.
The disc will have only 300 hand-numbered copies, all signed by the band, and will never have a public release.

Other rewards for pledging include copies of The Aurora Veil (Ne Obliviscaris' first demo) on vinyl, exclusive merchandise, opportunities to work with members of the band and more.

UPDATE:
New rewards are now available for pledging, including additional merchandise exclusive to the campaign and a second EP, featuring songs written during the band's early years. Like the first EP, this will be limited to 300 hand-numbered and signed copies, never to have a public release.

When I submitted an article about American Head Charge's campaign, my news item wasn't even approved. They still raised the money they needed, so fuck you once again, goddamn elitists.

Don't feel bad bruh. I've been here for 8 years and my shit still doesn't get approved lol.

Unless your band is desperate for cash due to an unfortunate circumstance like an accident or gear getting stolen, asking for free money from your fans is kinda pathetic.

It's not "asking for free money from your fans," you couldn't be more wrong.

The fans get rewards for pledging, that's ESSENTIAL to any crowdfunding campaign, and the money goes straight to the artist, instead of record companies or corporations like HMV and Hot Topic.
The fans (if they are actually fans) will want their money to be going to the bands anyway.

Lloyd is right, if you pledge you receive exclusive shit in return and studio updates. Its not like you get fuck all but a new record.

You're right tempest, I retract my statement.

I just don't agree with bands putting crazy price tags on some of thier "rewards".

Let me just take the stacks of 100 dollar bills out of my pillow case and spend them all at the local strip joint to donate them to some (quality?) titties and ass instead of donating them for Ne Obliviscaris.

It's bad enough when eBay scalpers sell off limited releases for hugely inflated prices but when a band does that with their own releases, that's just a new level of shitty.

Awesome band.
It surprises me how so many people on here don't know how crowd sourcing works.
It's not like it's anything new either. There are just so many easier and more efficient ways of carrying it out now.

I said this before and I'll it again: I hate when bands ask their fans for money. If they can't afford to tour then gtfo. Simple as that.

"If they can't afford to tour then gtfo."

I'm very happy to support bands who don't yet have the resources to tour. They're selling goods like any other artist, but it's a personal appeal instead of a paid advertisement through a record company.

but it's a personal appeal instead of a paid advertisement through a record company.

and you're sure of that how? Let me guess, because the band gave you their word? Lol.

And how does a band 'line up a show' when they don't have the funds for it? That doesn't even make sense. I'm not hating on this band in particular. I'm hating on ALL bands that beg their fans for money.

My quote from the review thread sums up my thoughts:

'They sound like beggars/desperate/cheap. It's a turn off. It's a like a chick who wants to do you but since she's not playing hard to get she's less attractive. That may not make sense to people who have low standards.'

I have no problem with these when it's done as a sort of pre order for an upcoming album with some cool bonuses. But this selling your old releases at 4 times their price because they're limited and you know your fans will buy them is kind of disgusting tbh.

precisely, let's go ahead and take advantage of our fans. 'Hey we need a larger tour bus, let's ask our fans!!'

Perhaps you didn't read the thread. There's no hate for the band's talent. We're not even talking
about the bands talent if you're referring to my conversation. Try actually reading the comments
before typing next time. If you're talking about another conversation then my apologies.

If you took the time to read mine I said I have nothing against crowdfunding just as long as it isn't done in a way that exploits your fans like selling them old albums for 120$ or your new EP for 100 because it's limited and it's the only way to get it.

Well it sounds like they're trying to fund the tour and the EP is something they weren't planning on doing but are doing as a cool perk for donating 95 bucks. Not a horrible idea to me. It'll leak anyways.

cap i dont really understand where you're coming from. it seems like you think that all kickstarter campaigns (not just music-related) are ridiculous and taking advantage of people.

if you go on the kickstarter website, there's lots of campaigns for new technology, video games, fashion, etc.. do these things not deserve to be made just because their creators dont personally have the funds? no, because there are people willing to donate to causes they care about to see these things become a reality.

this band has decent-sized fanbases in north america and europe, but as they said, flights from aus are ridiculously expensive. they have enough fans to fill venues, but they dont have the insane amounts of money to get there. any band of their caliber from the states would have no problem doing a tour, its their location that makes it difficult for them. dont really see what the issue is

that being said i wont be donating because i dont care about the band nearly enough to donate money to get them across the ocean in addition to buying an actual ticket. i think if it was possible, contributors getting a ticket to a concert in their city would be the best way to go about this, but i dont really see how that could work

I'd be OK with them using the crowdfunding strategy to create buzz about the band and remind everyone that, yes, they still exist and, yes, they do have bills to pay to finance their touring--but putting ridiculous prices on silly stuff is silly.

If they woulda put up signed copies of their CD at a slightly higher price, for example, they coulda given fans something nifty and desirable whilst still helping to pay their bills. Paying a buttload just to go lift weights with the bass player is a bit ridiculous, though. To make this whole crowdsourcing thing work without selling out you need to offer actually interesting rewards that general fans would be interested in purchasing anyway.

Protest the Hero did this right. The absurd prizes were put at absurd prices because they didn't think there was a chance in hell anyone would buy them. They also basically said "Hey, we want to self release this record. If you help us, we can do that. If not, oh well I guess we'll sign with someone."
