Led Zeppelin Accused of Plagiarism
2014-05-20 by livingisland | 98 Comments

A lawyer representing Randy California, guitarist for 60s band Spirit, is seeking legal action against world-famous rock band Led Zeppelin for stealing the intro to their
iconic hit 'Stairway to Heaven' from an instrumental track from the aforementioned band.

According to Rolling Stone magazine, the two bands played four gigs together in the late 60s. The song, 'Taurus', came out 3 years prior to 'Stairway to Heaven'.

People really have to give up on talking about how Led Zeppelin stole songs. There's only a certain amount of note
sequences one can write in a certain key and there are 7 billion people in this world. Odds are these guys aren't the first to
think of it either.

Ok for all idiots in this thread: the stairway opening riff is extremely simple and was used by many artists, there are some similarities, but thats it, no plagiarism there AND more importantly all the blues interpretations LZ did aren't rip offs!!!!!!! for the last fucking time :D those classic blues songs are common property with the original artists unknown. it is totally legitimate among the blues community to play older songs, you don't cover it, you do a new interpretation.

I thought with composition only the melody of a song was copyrighted (there's like 4 other copyrights in a single recorded work or something I can't really remember), as it is the most recognisable section of a song. Stairway To Heaven with different vocal melodies, is a different song; Stairway To Heaven with a different intro, or instrumentation, is still stairway to heaven. The same way the Men At Work drummer wanted songwriting credits for writing the drums to 'I come from the land down under', but the judged ruled that he could go and get fucked instead, because the drums are not integral and the song would at least melodically be the same with or without him. Obviously this riff is important to the song, but this is almost tantamount to someone hearing a triangle getting thrashed in this piece, and yelling out plagiarism because they fucked around on it first.

that's true but the whole plagiarism thing has been blown out of proportion for decades. take custard pie for instance. yeah some of the lyrics are taken from bukka white but it's not like all of them are. i mean i've never heard anyone blasting clutch for stealing from blind willie johnson even though fallon used some of his lyrics.
