R.I.P. H.R. Giger

2014-05-13 by Necrotica | 62 Comments
Swiss artist H.R. Giger passed away yesterday on May 12, 2014 due to injuries associated with a fall. The painter and sculptor was perhaps best known for his design of the titular Alien from the first Alien film back in 1979, which earned him an Oscar.

However, Giger's influence on the visual aspect of music was also very notable. Along with crafting Korn frontman Jonathan Davis' unique microphone stand, he was also responsible for the album art of bands such as Celtic Frost (with To Mega Therion), Emerson, Lake & Palmer (with Brain Salad Surgery), and Carcass (with Heartwork) among many others. His surreal style, mixing cold biomechanical subjects with a supernatural (usually nightmarish) touch, led to these album covers being very dark and eerie but also very memorable and intricate. He also lent his work to other things, such as his signature series of Ibanez guitars and the computer point-and-click video game series Dark Seed, along with plenty of films outside of Alien such as 1986's Poltergeist II: The Other Side and 1995's Species.

Here's a massive gallery of his art in case you haven't checked out his work yet: http://art.vniz.net/en/giger/

A blog I follow was actually posting a bunch of pictures that are definitely his work yesterday, no idea why, they didn't say it was because he died, don't even know if they knew he died by then. Kind of a creepy coincidence if they really didn't know.

Rest In Peace.

RIP. I am a huge fan of Tom G. Warrior and i have connected his paintings as visualitations of Triptykon and Celtic Frost.I think a part of CF/Triptykon's magic was lost today.Yet he was a great artist in overall
