Sunny Day Real Estate release new track 2014-04-20 by dimsim3478 | 25 Comments | It's been just about twenty years since Sunny Day Real Estate released Diary. It's been fourteen years since the band released their final album, The Rising Tide. It's been five years since they announced their reformation, and one year since bassist Nate Mendel confirmed their third breakup by stating that the recording sessions for their hotly anticipated new album "just fell apart".
I think, all things considered, it's safe to say that the Seattle emo second-wavers are just about done. Three breakups, a fourteen year gap between now and their last album, and the inability to finish recording a new album is just about enough. Having said that, I find myself actually wishing that the band would have released that proposed new album because their Record Store Day split offering 'Lipton Witch'--backed by Circa Survive's 'Bad Heart'--plays as a solid, establishing lead single for an album that will likely never ever come.
It sounds the way it's supposed to; four lauded musicians with a history, playing together again after over a decade apart and sounding quite different as a result. Taking the drifting alternative rock sound of the band's last album The Rising Tide, melding it with a commanding post-hardcore approach surprisingly akin to Sparta and led by a vigorous vocal performance from Jeremy Enigk, 'Lipton Witch' has the intent and skilled musicianship of a great band returning and yet heralds no such thing. Whether or not Sunny Day Real Estate is really completely done, 'Lipton Witch' exists as either a firm, victorious end for the legendary band or the beginning of a new age. The former's admittedly pretty nice, but here's hoping for the latter.

sounds decent - the chorus riff is sweet but his vocals are a turn-off (much prefer the dreamy vibe the vocalist had on Diary)
interesting that they chose to release it along with Circa Survive rather than an emo band

| | | news articles should be fairly void of subjectivity imo. just seems unprofessional. yeah song is lame. sounds like their best foo fighters impression. then again i wasnt a huge fan of them anyway, bar a couple of great emo tracks.

As much as I agree with this 100%, I don't care. Sputnik news articles have always been unprofessional; two sentences and then a link is not a news article, nor is the current most viewed news article (see top right hand corner).
Anyway, I thought it would be fun to combine a review and a news article.

Just giving 'em a little credit; they're an acclaimed band with an important place in contemporary music history, and this might just be their last song.
| | | took advantage of the space and did a soundoff for one song, usualy wouldnt like it but its nicely written so i dont really mind reading it, song kicks ass.
| | | I love it, vinyl was sold out before i could get my hands on it
| | | I don't really like this
| | | pretty good song, got it on record store day
| | | Not feelin it at all
| | | I live an hour north of Seattle and the two local record stores both didn't order this because the
interest level was too low.
Also Bad Heart is Bad.
| | | Song is decent, not feeling the article

There's nothing wrong with throwing in a little bit of personal opinion when it's for something as impersonal as a band releasing new material, as long as it doesn't sway majorly one way or the other. It's not like an article that might elucidate negatively on a musician that's passed away. This site's based on its community - spicing things up with the news is hardly a negative by-product of that. We're beyond 90s music journalism
