Dillinger Escape Plan drop surprise new song
2014-04-11 by XingKing | 225 Comments
New Jersey band The Dillinger Escape Plan have released a video for an, up until now, live-
only song, entitled 'Happiness Is A Smile'.

The band made a statement on their Facebook page, stating:

"Rather than wait for a new album, and try to figure out how to make it make sense as
part of a group of other songs that would be written later, we recorded it instantly, so it
could be captured as it's own statement
".

The song is to be pressed on limited quantities of 7" and sold on their current tour, with
all dates being filmed for a future video release.

You can check out the video here:

As much as I love Dillinger, I like seeing this side of them more than their spastic material nowadays. The frenetic guitar playing on Killer is not as inspired as previous releases, its far more interesting to see them do something more straight-forward and expand their sound even further.

People keep saying that but well there's actual people involved in it.. Sumerian, as far as i know,
didn't play a big role on the production of OOUITK, it was produced by Ben Weinman himself and Steve
Everett, i think he never produced any albums for Sumerian bands. This single has some downsides in
terms of production ok, but must it really be Sumerian's fault?

tbh i didn't like the track at all

gold teeth on a bum was probably the best "regular tempo" dep song, for a reason: it fucking rocked. dynamic shifts, weird time signatures without sounding pretentious (gold teeth doesn't sound super foreign due to the time unless you try to count along, then you run into trouble), and of course a fucking killer ending. this just kind of plodded along without really establishing itself or doing anything special.

also like everyone said the production was terrible.

"...but i don't think Sumerian is even their main distributor."

Dillinger releases their stuff through Party Smasher Inc, which was originally used as an imprint of Seasons Of Mist (Option Paralysis) and brought over when they signed to Sumerian. Ben said they formed Party Smasher Inc as a way to keep creative control and release what they want to. The actual production and business side of things is handled by whatever label they're signed to at the time.

Pots not gonna lie, insur didn't really act like a douche here.

danielito - "no soul, whatever. the point is that BtBaM is your
most played band on last.fm so you can't talk about hardcore"

fucking lol. what kind of argument is that? you like BtBaM so anything you say about hxc is
irrelevant. ok? according to who?

i dont even like BtBaM but that is some dumbass/troll logic right there.

Ok i took time to read this shit and Ins said nothing wrong whatsoever. The dude said something to which Ins didn't agree and so spoke his truth, the dude makes a stupid and unfounded statement about him not being able to acknowledge good hardcore for having BTBAM as his most played band on last.fm (what the actual fuck, the counter got stuck for me a long ago, that must mean my fav band is Cynic and i can't actually talk about music other than Prog/Jazz Fusion or wtv), Ins replies using the dude's logic against him pretty much and suddenly the dude is all tough and shit.

I don't see where Ins earned the bullying here.

wow this is still going on

danielito how about you explain why you think its generic and why something needs to be original to be good

danielito19
April 15th 2014
6803 Comments

okay, the song resides in/around 120 bpm the whole way through; the riffs are very sumerian, just straight up chugging, nowhere near what DEP is capable of. The one actual decent riff (1:20ish and again later) is just re-hashing a lot of older DEP melodies. That isn't generic, just weak. However, the remainder of the chugging riffs sound about identical to anything else on sumerian. Also, the song really didn't go anywhere after establishing itself - a major problem for DEP tracks as most of their slower material tended to branch out into codas or separate lego-brick sections after a while. Look at Gold Teeth on a Bum. I can't count the number of separate sections in that song off the top of my head, and I've heard it plenty of times. Unretrofied? Incredibly dynamic and ever-changing. This song has a "chug section," a "jazz riff," and a "heavy ending."

As for why something needs to be original to be good - are you serious? I literally don't even know how to respond to that, it just seems so obvious that original music is better. I mean, music can totally be influenced by other music and still remain original.

how about you explain why something DOESN'T need to be original to be good?

lol jesus christ danielito it says you joined in '10 but i have never seen you before this thread. theres probably a good reason for that. anyway so youll stfu,

your analysis of the song means nothing. who gives a shit how fast it is. its heavy as fuck and has tons of energy. youre sitting there trying to analyze each section and how it compares to other dillinger material when its not a thinking song, its purely kinetic.

gold teeth on a bum has only a handful of different ideas and its little different than a standard pop structure. no idea what youre talking about there. same with unretrofied. dynamic and ever-changing? lol no. its a typical dillinger pop song with a heavy bridge, thats it.

the originality argument is stupid because its damn near impossible to find something completely original these days. just because the song is technically a standard hardcore song doesnt make it any worse than other hardcore songs. its completely subjective and no amount of analyzing is gonna change that which is why i didnt retort in the first place. your childish insults affirmed the fact that arguing with you would be a waste of time (and it still is)

sorry beef and everyone else for having to endure this garbage
