Opeth Detail New Album
2014-04-08 by Kyle Ward STAFF | 262 Comments
Swedish progressive metal band Opeth have released the details for their upcoming album, which will be titled Pale Communion. The release date of the album is slated for June 17 via Roadrunner Records, with a pre-order date set for May 6.

Frontman Mikael Akerfeldt has stated in an interview with Noisey that he "wanted to do something more melodic with this album…there’s stronger vocal melodies and more melodies overall…I was pretty consistent with that frame of mind throughout the writing process.”

Pale Communion will be the band's 11th studio LP, following their 2011 release Heritage.

The track listing for Pale Communion is as follows:

1. Eternal Rains Will Come
2. Cusp of Eternity
3. Moon Above, Sun Below
4. Elysian Woes
5. Goblin
6. River
7. Voice of Treason
8. Faith in Others

He's been pretty tight-lipped about it, but iirc he said there would be no growls. If I had to guess I'd say it would probably be like Watershed/Ghost Reveries-era instrumentation (i.e. heavy at times) with more progressive tendencies and all clean vox.

"The new Opeth album Pale Communion was mixed into stereo and 5.1 at my studio in February. I also sang harmony vocals. It’s by no stretch of the imagination a metal record but it’s still plenty heavy and a great piece of work - for me the epic orchestrated ballad “Faith in Others” that closes the album is Mikael Åkerfeldt's finest achievement to date. Pale Communion is released by Roadrunner Records on 19th June. It’s also the first Opeth album to be recorded and mixed in higher resolution 96/24. I hope Roadrunner will release a high res format, but I don't know their plans on that."- Steven Wilson

The capacity of human intelligence seems to limit the capabilities to expand upon any possible creative aptitudes. Indeed, if one cannot even notice the facets that the ingenuities around him are comprised of, how can he be expected to fashion a beast of his own? This inveterate sense of constraint is a great blow to the veracity of mankind’s abilities. It restrains us and holds our minds to the ground below, averting any possibility of rising above ourselves to something greater; something not fathomed by the conventional mind. This concept of seeking to go beyond one’s self, known as “transcendence”, is essentially a gateway to unlocking pieces of ourselves that can lead to some of the most elaborate and significant creations of our world. For many, this quest to transcend and form creations that were once considered unthinkable and overwhelming consumes life. Certainly it is rare to find such people, but when they are found, creative barriers are destroyed.

I'm sure this album will be good. No matter the style, I think Opeth are talented enough to pull off whatever concept they set out for themselves. I liked Damnation and Heritage just as much as MAYH, Still Life, so I'm excited to see a refined "blend" of those two worlds or at least a sound that is different (of not new) to them.

From what I've gathered, this is going to sound like (and Kyle has mentioned this) a Ghost Reveries/Watershed album minus the growls, with some Storm Corrosion/Comus/Heritage-esque folk compositions which I'm kind of excited for.

I'm expecting a Damnation-meets-Ghost Reveries album here. Also, the growls were only an small part of what makes Opeth's music so awesome; they added some punch. But his cleans are so beautiful anyways, and Opeth really needs to explore their melodic side further.

Just how heated people get over this band and specifically, Hertiage-era Opeth.
I mean I look at like this, Heritage had some messy parts that made it sound unfocused at times and perhaps if wore it's influences a little too proudly. BUT it had great production, vocals and musicianship. Axe and Mendez really upped their game. It sticks out as a the odd one in their catalogue but the amount of shot it gets is beyond comprehension.
Which is where I don't understand metal fans, a band can change so long as it's imn approved?

"don't pretend u weren't moaning over logic or arguments or whatever on spooky's list"

I'm not pretending anything. You're bringing up something that has nothing to do with this just because you're mad at me. Seriously, why are you dragging something across the website that was so insignificant? Why can't two people just disagree and have it be left at that?

"thing is, is not opeth itself the problem. everyone here is a complete bitch and will whine for everything, it's just that opeth are well known so everyone can discuss the band, and this happens"

Yes, this is true. I was making a joke.

They're definitely not the same band if you consider the 9 albums Opeth did before Heritage.

Wrong again. I mentioned after the fact my feeling on the album but holy shit, they're a completely different band and you should probably stop listening to music if you think otherwise.

As much as I love Opeth, they have probably the worst fanbase for anything ever

i like how he lumps anyone who dislikes heritage or misses the growls or whatever into the category of closed minded "internet metal nerd" (worst term ever btw). go back to metalsucks. most of us here are open minded and listen to music beyond metal. hell, most of what i listen to these days isn't metal. checking your ratings, it looks like you're the one who could use a little diversity in your life instead of randomly bitching in here about 'metal fans'. this may be hard for you to believe but some people listen to an album and it just plain doesn't sound good to their ears.

Maybe Akerfeldt should save all of his love for
70's prog for a solo album instead of waving
his jethro tull boner in our faces. Either way
I can't wait to hear it! (that's not to say I
don't like jethro tull- I just hope this album
is more akin to Opeth's older material, even if
there aren't any death growls, which doesn't
bother me.)

Heritage was really disappointing, with only about 1/3 of the tracks really grabbing me. Watershed had some real gems but also a couple of songs so horrible that they're basically unlistenable. I'm nervous about Pale Communion. The last Opeth album I truly loved was Ghost Reveries; I want my "real" Opeth back.

My main concern isn't that this won't contain elements of their older sound, but that they won't be able to match the quality of those albums once again.

With Damnation they proved that they can write amazing music even with no death metal elements incoporated. Heritage wasn't lackluster because it wasn't sooper hevvy, it was lackluster because it just wasn't as good.

''instead of just writing what comes naturally''

Now, now, are you serious? This is the whole reason everybody's losing their mind in this thread. Because Opeth don't want to go back to death-prog, but want to change their style into prog rock! God, even Akereldt himself said that he felt uninspired when trying to write aggressive music! That's what ''comes naturally''..... He even explained Heritage's cover, saying that the tree's roots were the bands past, with death metal, and the branches were its maturity and new era.
That's what comes naturally, not what you want...
