At the Gates announce new album
2014-01-27 by Trey Spencer STAFF | 57 Comments
Melodic Death Metal artists At the Gates have announced their first album of new material since 1995's Slaughter of the Soul. The album is expected to be released near the end of 2014 through Century Media Records.

Press Release:

"So, here we are almost 24 years since the birth of AT THE GATES, and some 18+ years since our latest album 'Slaughter Of The Soul'. A lot of years have passed and we have embarked on some life-changing reunion tours and shows the last couple of years.

So, why make a new album you might ask, and why now? Well, what we learned from the last couple of years hanging out and playing shows together, is that we enjoy what we do to the fullest extent. We love playing music together, and we love to hang out as friends. But, as a musician, we constantly write new music. It's a huge part of our identities.

We are fully aware that we have made some very drastic statements in interviews as well as the closing words on the DVD about the longevity of AT THE GATES, but things change, situations change and people change. When Anders sent the first song last summer, we had zero expectations of the outcome. We only knew one thing - That it sounded amazing! At the time we weren't even sure there would be an album, but as things progressed, more songs came into existence, and we knew we were on to something great.

We know you are all curious about the new material, and to make a simple explanation of where we are at musically, we would describe it as a perfect mix between early AT THE GATES & 'Slaughter of the Soul'-era AT THE GATES, trying to maintain the legacy and the history.

We chose Century Media as a worldwide partner for the upcoming album. We have all been friends for years with people at the label. Jonas & Anders have a history with THE HAUNTED there (as well as Adrian with PARADISE LOST).

So, we hope to bring you updates about the progress of the new album soon. The plan is to record the album in June/July with a tentative release in October / November of 2014 on Century Media Records."

this has a chance of being pretty bad but i mean this is the band that made TRITSIO which might be the best melodeath album so hopefully it isnt just SOTS part 2.

I think it all depends on which style they go with. They could make an album like TRITSIO or SOTS or try something new. Will be interesting to hear what they go with.

i just want them to go back to making more of those mournful soul crushing melodies like they did back in the day which might possibly happen. SOTS has been ripped off so much at this point that if they decide to go with that style it'll just sound kind of dumb, which is unfortunate for them but thats what you get when you pioneer a style.

and i want lindberg to go back to making those banshee wails but that definitely wont ever happen haha.

I agree, especially about how derivative that SOTS sound is nowadays after having been more or less stolen by countless melodeath and especially metalcore bands. Having that whole "death metal that is melodic" approach would make for a really good record. Whether or not they can still do it 22 years later is another matter.

If Carcass and Gorguts are any judge, classic dm bands can make great comebacks.

Band needs Alf [2]

still, for some reason i have a shred of faith in this...they've been playing the same damn sots/tsd setlist for so long now that they must be hungering for the dark psychotic mindfuck riffs again

if it really turns out to be a mix of the old style and sots, then i think it will really come down to the production that makes or breaks the deal

it will almost definitely be produced in the same general vein as the new carcass was, which i guess isn't a bad thing but i still dont like production like that.

Brilliant! But I fear that many fans will be disappointed when they expect a carbon copy of the quite brilliant "Terminal Spirit Disease" or genre-defining "Slaughter of the Soul".

If they could make something that mixed the rough (lack of a better term) stuff from RITSIO with the thrashy nature of some of the SOTS stuff and some more melody that the later melodeath bands added, that'd be cool.

Or if they made an album of The Swarm 10 times, that'd be good too

Stoked for this! The same thing with the new album of Carcass, this should be kick-ass album. Reunion of old style death metal bands is the trend now, I guess?

Here's an interview about the upcoming album and stuff:

To answer your question, the record will be filled with a lot of the Slayer worship and riffage that is Slaughter of the Soul, but people will also recognize the more dark, melodic side that was With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness, and maybe some of the more pretentious arrangements that was part of our early career.

Speaking of Carcass though, Jeff [Walker] has been picking my brain about this for a long time, and we ARE on a similar journey, the two bands. And seeing them not die doing this maybe helped ease the angst a little, haha! And it’s a good album, Surgical Steel, it really is—and seeing the band live in 2013 with new songs in the set list was invigorating, but remember they had to follow up Swansong, and not Heartwork…
