The Ocean Complete New Lineup
2013-12-07 by Alex Newton | 24 Comments

Berlin post-metal band The Ocean (formerly The Ocean Collective) have announced the addition of guitarist Damian Murdoch to their upcoming tours. Murdoch completes the band's third incarnation, arriving a few weeks after drummer Paul Seidel (War From a Harlot's Mouth). Current guitarist Jonathan Nido and drummer Luc Hess will be leaving The Ocean on good terms following the completion of their current tour.

Nido and Hess have been with the band since 2007 and 2008, respectively, and are featured on the outfit's last three LP's and a brand new live/restrospective DVD, Collective Oblivion. Murdoch previously played with the Damian Murdoch Trio, an instrumental blues band, as well as teaching guitar.

Murdoch won the spot with his rendition of "Bathyalpelagic II: The Wish in Dreams" from this year's well-received full length, Pelagial:

"so.. how longs this going to last"

Probably indefinitely. The Ocean is known for having a revolving-door cast of musicians. It keeps their sound interesting and inconsistent.

agreed with that, tho some album can be a hit or miss

"It keeps their sound interesting and inconsistent."

Yeah, they went from an incredible, original band into something more generic and boring.

I'd say he won't last, but thats just me.

The addition of Paul Seidel could mean a huge turn for the band.

I don't see how this band is relevant anymore. They've stripped away everything I loved about them in the first place.

I'd say Pelagial is as good as Fluxion. I like both better than Precambrian.

Well, i love him on tape, on a live set he can be kind of obnoxious and really, really cocky.

i cant see pel being anywhere near fluxion, when they were a collective they had the best lineup they've ever had

I only listened to Pelagial once, plus this band always has changing members, so it seems kinda irrelevant.

Saying that, Hess rules and the band is pretty great live

I can't verify that or say otherwise since I haven't seen them live. He could be a dick live but that doesn't change the fact that his vocals have been excellent in this band.

He's good but not great live. He gets a little lazy with the cleans sometimes but the harsh vox are solid. He's also an absolute boss crowdsurfer.

My reference is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErfmxGYWXr0

Where he seems to be performing better than 95%+ of metal vocalists I've seen who perform both harsh and clean vocals live.

Good, they need to keep the members rotating.

"better than 95%+ of metal vocalists I've seen who perform both harsh and clean vocals live."

even Meta, who everyone treats like some greek god, wasn't perfect live. I'm very happy with how Loic has turned out.
