Jay-Z Ranked

2013-12-06 by John Lennon b.h.w. STAFF | 59 Comments
Billionaire socialite Jay-Z recently took a break from trying to talk Robinson Cano into
playing for the Mariners and posted on his tumblr a ranking of the discography of rapper-
salesperson Jay-Z. The list (and his own commentary) has been reproduced below.

Quote:
1. Reasonable Doubt (Classic)
2. The Blueprint (Classic)
3. The Black Album (Classic)
4. Vol. 2 (Classic)
5. American Gangster (4 1/2, cohesive)
6. Magna Carta (Fuckwit, Tom Ford, Oceans, Beach, On the Run, Grail)
7. Vol. 1 (Sunshine kills this album…fuck… Streets, Where I’m from, You Must Love Me…)
8. BP3 (Sorry critics, it’s good. Empire (Gave Frank a run for his money))
9. Dynasty (Intro alone…)
10. Vol. 3 (Pimp C verse alone… oh, So Ghetto)
11. BP2 (Too many songs. Fucking Guru and Hip Hop, ha)
12. Kingdom Come (First game back, don’t shoot me)

If you're taking the word "classic" in the context we use it here on Sputnik he comes off as arrogant but I don't think he really gives the word that much weight. On the contrary, I was really impressed by his humility here. If you compare how he ranks his albums against each other with how they're rated on here he actually sees his albums very similarly to how his fans do. Furthermore, for an artist to admit that their first album was their best work is huge. It's really easy to move past your earlier work and look more favorably at your recent stuff. It would even make promotional sense for him to be like, "Reasonable Doubt? It's got NOTHING on *insert lowest selling album here.* That one's a gem no one's even dug deep enough into yet." Instead, we see him recognizing his own apathy toward his work on most of his albums. I see this as him giving a good insight into him as a business man and sometimes inspired MC. Just my two cents. If you were to look at all of my ratings you'd see that I've only ever rated Reasonable Doubt as it's the only one I've even listened to to completion.

Not saying that he shouldn't have confidence in his work, but I find it pretty lame when people label their own music as "classic."
