Help keep music in Canada

2013-08-29 by SCREAM! | 41 Comments
About a month ago the Canadian government quietly passed a new rule raising the fees for international bands entering Canada to play shows from a one time 150$ per band member fee (that was capped at 450$) to 425$ per band member per performance.

This ridiculous increase would make it impossible for underground artists from abroad to tour the country and would strike a critical blow to small to medium sized music venues across the country.

A petition has been opened on change.org in order to bring attention to the matter. At the moment, the petition has already garnered over 65 000 signatures.

Is this some kind of sick joke?

I mean, the majority of financial press reports on the crisis missing Canada by an inch or two and they pass such a rule?

They must have took some serious lessons from their Greek colleagues on this one, I can't explain it otherwise.

This is a great strategy in helping mainstream music labels stay dominant. Brilliant but still absolutely shitty and not morally right of course.

Bands coming into Canada would only benefit the cities they visit. Bands pumping money into an
already struggling economy is a good thing. Why make it more difficult to draw bands to the country?
It is essentially pointless and only hurts the people of Canada in the long run by not introducing
them to new artists.
