Sounds like the lyrics to a song by another band who released a single today...

I think the reason I think this is so bad is that the whole "Light Em Up" comparison is spot on. The vibe of the song is the same, the "woah-oh" is similar, christ even the music video feels similar. It's awful.

Panic's success has always surprised me. Their debut was strong and unique for what it was, and then they really shit the bed with Pretty Odd. Vices & Virtues was okay I guess, but it still felt...directionless? At least to me. Then I hear this shit and it's clear that this band has no identity whatsoever.

CutMan

They were aping the Beatles in a weak fashion. Most of the songs felt soul-less, because it was Beatles esque for the sake of being that way, it tried too hard.

Criticizing a band for trying to completely become another band is not a dumb criticism. You know, if you value things like having a smidge of creativity or originality.

Cygnatti
July 16th 2013

yeah pretty odd is pretty awesome. And it sounds way more like the zombies and the beach boys than the Beatles anyway.

Cygnatti

I mean panic was never all that creative anyways, they're fucking pop rock for god's sake. I think that radically shift in sound should have been celebrated and be an example for their obstinately static peers.

Gyromania
July 16th 2013
20208 Comments

i ask for criticisms not involving the beatles and what do i get? just that. god

they were never trying to 'become' the beatles. that is such a stupid fucking thing to say. they drew from a pretty broad palette of psych/classic rock progenitors to create something aesthetically different (you know, like most bands). i hate to be the one to break it to you, but all music is influenced in some way by older bands, and i don't see what the problem with them emulating their influences is. also, people need to get over this notion that taking influence from a band means they're tarnishing their artistic credibility or w/e, because that's patently false

Cygnatti
July 16th 2013

the prople saying that act as if the Beatles were the only ones to sound like that because try can't think of any other psychedelic pop band.

Gyromania
July 16th 2013
20208 Comments

it's also hilarious because they pull off that beatles-esque sound better than 90% of their contemporaries. let's face it, patd is one of those bands whose name is immediately recognizable, and in many social circles it's condemned because of stereotypes. i'd bet a pound to a penny that most of the hate directed towards them comes from people who have heard maybe 1 or 2 of their songs.

If I wanted to hear the Beatles and, fine, other psychedelic pop bands... I'd listen to those psychedelic pop bands. I don't give a care if you think they "pulled it off".

Also, for a band that didn't just mainly want to be the Beatles, they sure did try hard enough, what with their choice of studio, that first single's music video, and which band I heard name dropped most in their interviews around the time.......

Cygnatti

Though I do agree that this sounds pretty on par with Fall Out Boy's new style I think this sounds more like it fits as a Panic! at The Disco song whereas My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark does not fit with Fall Out Boy.

Vices and Virtues followed by this seems like this would have been the inevitable direction of this band if Pretty. Odd. didn't happen.

And due to the timing of the release it's hard to tell if this song was inspired by Fall Out Boy as it is entirely possible that it was written before.

On a side note, though I am a fan of literary bands, I do not like the use of the Hunter Thompson quote. I feel his style of writing does not fit with this.

These are just first impressions though and I'll wait for the album to pass judgement.I'll wait for the album to judge

Gyromania, you can thrash about all you want, but all you keep saying is "did not did not did not" and "Do you even know blah blah blah"... Yes, I know there were other bands in the Beatles genre. I've even, gasp, heard some of them. But... "The Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour and David Bowie's Hunky Dory were constantly played during recording."

So, yeah, sorry, I hear a whole lot more Beatles than anything else. Sorry my opinion differs from you. I was just born a twit, I guess.
