Deftones to release Eros
2013-05-11 by Jeremy Bentham | 191 Comments
At the recent Golden God Awards, Deftones vocalist Chino Moreno has stated that in light of the tragic death of bassist Chi Cheng, the shelved album Eros will finally "see the light of day". The album was originally shelved in 2009 following Cheng's 2008 car accident and has been described as a much darker, complex, and intense album than 2010's Diamond Eyes.

They were in a great place. Their last album was Saturday Night Wrist and it was the best album of their career, they could only improve from there, and they finished the album when Chi got in his accident. The shelved the undoubtedly amazing material and went on to make the likeable, but ultimately disappointing Diamond Eyes.

That's your opinion, I'm stating a fact. There was a lot of tension in the band at that time. Just read interviews and they'll say, they weren't getting on very well and there was a lot of shit going round.

Actually, I think a lot of that tension was resolved just before recording Eros.

DrGonzo1937
May 12th 2013

Jesus, if you all want to sit and kid yourselves then do it. But it took Chi's accident to bring them all in a good place again (as awful as it sounds). They were having problems. Chino has even said they didn't want it to be released because they didn't think it's very good. This is when he was in a coma.

Tell ya, the elitist fanboys for Deftones on this site is ridiculous. If they released a pile of dogshit in a CD case, I'm sure it'd still be classed as a masterpiece on here.

SubtleBody
May 12th 2013
519 Comments

Not really, maybe you should just stop being such a pessimist. Must you criticise people for having high hopes and beliefs for the final album featuring Chi? I personally thought Diamond Eyes was pretty bad, and I'm not a big fan of the first two albums either. Don't assume that just because we believe this will be a good album means that we're diehard fanboys who will eat up whatever the band plates us. Not everyone can sit around shit-mouthing an album they've heard nothing of like you, Dr. G.

SubtleBody

"People don't like Diamond Eyes? Why? It sounds like classic Deftones. Can someone explain?"

It has some of their most boring, repetitive, filler tracks.

The title track and Rocket Skates are probably the most boring songs they've written since AtF

It has some good tracks, and the production is really well done. Chino sounds great too. However as far as songwriting goes, it's pretty average.

Not sure whats up with all the hate around here for Diamond Eyes! Diamond Eyes was nearly a flawless Deftones release, one of the best since White Pony. Koi No Yokan, although I enjoyed it plenty, was a little bit of a disappointment.. but you gotta be kidding me about Diamond Eyes, those songs were fantastic. They were progressive, high energy, heavy as hell, crushing deftones tracks to their core.

and yeah its kinda cool to see that there is lots of Deftones love here on this board.

I may not believe in Christianity, but its stance on Deftones is something we should all put our faith in

It'd be cool if this was their next release.

Koi No Yokan is premonition of love

Eros is erotic love

Could've release them both as a double album some day.

His point wasn't that either of those was an example of facetiousness - there's your starting point

HEAVIER, DARKER

I'm all for it. I think this is a very respectable move on their part. From what I recall hearing, the only reason they haven't released it sooner was because they were waiting for Chi to get better. I'm barely a fan of these guys but what songs I've heard, I've liked the heavier riffs so this will be something I can possibly enjoy.

"The album was originally shelved in 2009 following Cheng's 2008 car accident and has been described as a much darker, complex, and intense album than 2010's Diamond Eyes."

seems very fitting, RIP Cheng

I read somewhere that Chino mentioned that this wouldn't be released in the near future. They're not really entertaining the idea at the moment. The only thing that changed was that with Chi's passing they will actually consider it now at some point, whereas they wouldn't consider it whilst he was still recovering.
