Mars Volta singer goes solo
2013-02-08 by Alex Carlson | 39 Comments
Former Mars Volta frontman and vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala has revealed details about his long-in-the-works solo album.

Through Twitter, Bixler-Zavala offered some subtle hints about the upcoming LP’s sound, stating that he’s “not making a rock record.” Bixler-Zavala said to prepare for “lots of desert ballad space jams, lots of harmonies, lots of lap steel and piano,” along with “short bitter sweet love songs.”

The singer has noted additional appearances from other musicians including Axis of Justice’s Jonny Polonsky and long-time Mars Volta bassist Juan Alderete. The album will involve producer Noah Georgeson and will eventually lead to a tour, though specific dates are currently unknown.

Bixler-Zavala has been working on his solo LP since he was the singer for progressive rockers The Mars Volta, which disbanded earlier this year after guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez formed his own side project, Bosnian Rainbows.

Here's a little taste: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=mkiSkC67wQ0

Really excited to hear this, it's been in the works for years.

Also, for the super Volta fans...The lyrics he sings at the very end of that clip were used in the Trinkets jams from the fall 2011 tour. So hopefully a lot of the other lyrics he was throwing in during that leg make an appearance on this album, because he was on fire that tour.

I really wish he would go back to singing like he did with At the Drive In. I like his style with TMV too, but I really miss that bark

Yeah I know but doesn't necessarily mean he can

I was kinda hoping to hear more of his voice... i'm not too convinced by the sound of it....
but it actually sounds pretty interesting... Very

It kinda sounds like a music box being played during a cold winter... it's very relaxing and pretty.
The sudden low key of the piano at the end was just weird and broke the mood though

if this is good then it kinda proves that omar needs cedric to be good but not vice versa, lol oh
the irony

It's kinda odd that the sound clip only features two seconds of his vocals. Anyone else think that?

Yeah, this is gonna kick butt. Sounds like it's gonna be a psychedelic-y Latin record, and I always loved both of those aspects of TMV. Definitely picking this up.

Maybe Cedric and the former Three Days Grace frontman should release a duet album?

In all seriousness, though, I'm interested in this. He has talent so I hope he aims it in the right direction.
