Oxford math rock band This Town Needs Guns have officially made the decision to change their name to the acronym "TTNG". Frontman Harry Tremain has officially released two statements regarding the change: a notice on their official webpage, and an open letter on their Tumblr. Tremain explained that, being from Oxford, the group chose the name for its "ironic statement" since the UK is a location in which guns are few amongst the general populace under the law: "ordinarily, our police force do not even carry guns", says Tremain.
However, the increasing international popularity of This Town Needs Guns has made it clear that the ironic nature of the name may not be implicit in other countries, and the band seeks to separate their integrity from any violent implications. The statements also cited reasons such as "the controversy over gun ownership in the US as well as tragic shootings there and elsewhere in the world" and "sever[ing] the link between the old material and the new and remove it from being seen as the progression that it is as a whole body of work".
This Town Needs Guns most recently released their follow-up to the acclaimed debut Animals on the 22nd of January, entitled 13.0.0.0.0.

I have no problem with this. TTNG is still This Town Needs Guns to me. Only thing that changes is the title on their T-shirts. Same thing with Harvard changing to HRVRD and MGMT.
