For Today Guitarist Steps Down
2013-01-14 by andcas | 182 Comments

The Christian metalcore band For Today have lost one of their guitarists due to a batch of extremely controversial twitter comments about homosexuality. Mike Reynolds chose to share his outdated views in response to President Barack Obama asking anti-gay Rev. Louie Giglio to deliver a speech at his inauguration.

The LGBT community rallied against the idea to the point that Giglio declined the invite and Reynolds took this as a personal attack on his religious beliefs. In retaliation he went online to write the following rants that lead to a massive backlash and ultimately forced him to step down from his position in the band.

“Don’t be deceived, homosexuality is a sin. This sin with all other sins is what Jesus died for. He conquered so that we would be free. No such thing as a gay Christian, the same as there is no such thing as a Christian who loves his sin. Don’t be fooled by the formation of a state church as though the government is being converted, they only use the name Jesus for their progressive liberal agenda. If you are a Christian then separate yourself from this civil religion that advocates sin. Be true to God.”

The vocalist for the group immediately made a candid video to let fans know that the remaining members didn’t hold the same opinions. In the aftermath Reynolds has since been replaced and now he has decided to attend Bible college while doing full-time mission work in the Middle East.

I don't understand how Christians justify that homosexuality is a sin. It's just not logical. Murder, infidelity, stealing...those things are logically bad because someone in being hurt. Homosexuality hurts no one. Is there even an argument for why it's bad? It makes as much sense as the "no tattoos" part of the Bible, but Reynolds seems to have no issues with committing that sin.

Exactly. Like, 90% of the 'Christians' nowadays pick and choose what in the bible they'd like to adhere to, and then vehemently stand for it. Regardless, the guy was tactless, and I think 'screaming 4 Jesus' is a dumb way of 'preaching'.. but as an agent of logic, I have to defend him in that he was correct on that part of the bible. But of course, i'm not allowed to say that.. P.S. Andcas you are like, so butthurt, man lol.

I don't understand how Christians justify that homosexuality is a sin.

Homosexuals are largely discriminated against in western culture, to the point that some deny their
sexualities to themselves. They end up convincing themselves that they are heterosexuals and live
their lives to reflect that. When these people get fed up with living a lie they "come out," which is
usually an effective way of destroying the marriages and families that they spent years building.
Because of that, religious nutters will claim that gayness ruins families.

Also, I'm pretty sure it's a sin to be in a Christian metalcore group. God listens to Slayer, not
Demon Hunter.

Well that's all relative, isn't it? I mean, even if you hate the bible with the intensity of 1,000 imploding dying suns; he is correct on believing that. Sure, it may not something you like, (so you attack it, lol), but his statement is correct as a Christian. Christians are supposed to live by and preach what's recorded in the bible, and his statement was in fact, backed by the bible, as tactlessly as he may have expressed it.

no way, my couch is comfy.

Also, with the whole bible thing, it's not even nowadays. Christians have ALWAYS picked and chosen the bits they like/just plain made up other bits. Take for instance slavery and the belief that god made black men inferior. These were hardcore Christians believing that, despite the fact that it has no basis in anything.

Guy doesn't come in to say that the band doesn't share the same beliefs; you hate on whole band.

Guy does; you hate on whole band.

Is it slightly possible that you're a bit of an obnoxious cunt and that the guy just wants to make sure people don't think he's ignorant and bigoted? I mean, if I were in that situation, I wouldn't sit back and let people make false accusations about me.

Lest we forget wearing linen clothing and eating pork are sins as well.

And how many Christians eat bacon and wear t-shirts?

Religion is a device to moralize the stupid through fear and to give them a sense of control over life around them (by suggesting that faith in God can change events beyond your control, rather than simply having faith in humanity). If you have your own morality independent of a Godhead and you can adequately trust in others and yourself, then religion is of little worth.

You sayin I'm a total moron? I don't agree with half the stuff the church says. The church for the most part twists the Bible and make their own agendas. I left my old church becuase the pastor made his own agenda and strayed from the path. I have a lot of gay friends. I don't condem them for it. I love them like I love my straight friends. Doesn't mean I have to agree with their choice.
Speaking of straying from the path, SFTP's new album is spectacular.

People really have to get over the fact that other people have different points of view, and it's not within our rights to not be offended. As long as no one actively hurts anyone physically, it's just an asshole spouting his rhetoric. I'm personally against gay marriage myself... and straight marriage, keep love away from the state and perform whatever mickey mouse ceremony you wish to, with whomever you wish as long as it's between consenting adults.

this thread is embarrassing, except for the rare few posts from users who have a somewhat respectable intelligence.

most of you here are just trying something to bitch about, it's quite sad honestly. this turned into something bigger than it should and in the end, I still don't get what the big deal is about.

this guitarist has nothing against gay people. he called them sinners based on the context of his religion. that's right, his religion. gays are considered sinners in his religion. why the hell would any of you care who he labels sinners or not? he didn't advocate any sort of violence against them. worst yet, I can already see the majority of you are non-believers so his post shouldn't have even fazed any of you.

in all honesty, the only people who deserve to be offended at this post are gay christians because they themselves should be able to judge whether they are sinners within the realm of christianty.

No one supposedly inspired by god actually condemns homosexuality in the Bible, as far as I know. Jesus never condemns it in the New Testament, and the only ones that do are his followers (who aren't divinely inspired themselves). The Book of Leviticus also wasn't divinely inspired, since it took >200 years to be completed by different groups and schools of thought.

@ zaruyache

One thing one must also remember with regard to the bible and homosexuality is that the dominant form of homosexuality in those times was pederasty something we don't even consider homosexuality these days but pedophilia or hebephilia.

Our thinking and culture has changed quite a bit since the various books of the bible were written and its odd how some try and make the parts of the bible that no longer apply to us in the 21st century fit.

As a christian I find the whole biblical inerrancy idea rather cancerous. And that's how you end up with the poor misguided guitarist of a christian metalcore band accidentally making a fool of himself on the Twitter.

What I find more interesting still is how people today blatantly disregard all scripture outside of
the 27 books located in the Bible itself. The Bible's definition of "canonical" scripture cut out
many relevant (and religion-defining) pieces of text, all for the sake of focusing on one specific
aspect of the religion (Jebus), while ignoring many other equally valid points (like the whole
"people don't burn in hell forever" idea that comes from Peter's Revelation). So not only do people
ignore certain aspects of the Bible that do no match up with their own
philosophical/political/social ideals, but also whole texts from the religion itself. :-[

So you don't eat pork, don't wear linen, don't do anything on Sundays, and have never eaten a Fig Newton?

Also, as said above, if you legitimately think the universe as we know it was shaped in 7 days by some manner of creator flipping on the lights, pouring some water, adding trees, animals, and people, then you're quite undereducated.

"i think a lot more of you should try praying more often, the realization that there's something higher than you is relieving in so many ways u no?"

Quoth witchxrapist.

I don't know, really. I think there's a lot that's larger than us that we don't really know about. This planet, alone, has been alive much longer than we have and it's held many more creatures than are alive today. There are still parts of the universe that we've yet to see and aspects of our reality that we've yet to define.

We're too young as a species to speculate on things we can't experience when we're still trying to understand the things we do.

Good thing he made a point to mention this...(sarcasm). Honestly though, regardless of whether he cares, no one else does. For as big a deal as homosexuality was made into during the election cycle seems to have had....0, none, exactly no impact on....ANYTHING. Homosexuals make up less than 2% of the population. What they choose to do is not my concern. Trying to make it into a political issue was dumb.

I don't give a shit about the band, but for everyone to smear the group over a members views? Fuck off lol, go live your lives and quit obsessing about what some "christian" nimrod thinks. Too much to do in life than worry about offending individuals or even defending them.

Atomic Waste, I don't have to do these things because Jesus fulfilled these laws. We don't have to stay "ritually clean' because the blood of Jesus does that for us. Additionally, many of these laws were actually advice to the Israelites that kept them alive and far healthier than their neighbors. During the Middle Ages, Jews had a reputation for being witches because they got the plague far less than Christians, because of their good hygiene.

In a small way, I do agree with Matt Reynolds. One cannot be a gay christian anymore than I can be a black christian. Being a Christian (a follower of christ), should be your primary identity. Your identity should be primarily invested in Christ. When you put gay in front of that, you're saying that your homosexuality (or sin, depending on how you perceive it) is equal to your identity in Christ, and that's not right.

Westicles96
January 27th 2013

It was a bad analogy, yeah, but the point still stands. You shouldn't put any titles before or equal to your identity in Christ. I'm still black yeah, but my life shouldn't revolve around that
