"Too future" DJ Shadow mix released 2013-01-05 by dimsim3478 | 39 Comments | Prominent hip hop DJ Josh Davis, better known as DJ Shadow, has released a mix spanning approximately an hour and a half entitled "All Basses Covered" on his Soundcloud page. Subtitled "The Infamous South Beach Set, December 2012", the mix comprised his set for a performance just last month, which resulted in his removal from Mansion Nightclub in Miami, Florida, cutting his set short. Shadow commented that this was due to the mix being "too future" for the promoters (the incident can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3sO0Se-NT0), who similarly cut Dennis Ferrer's set in February of last year, said to be due to a lack of commercial appeal. The Mansion Nightclub issued a letter of apology some time after the incident.
DJ Shadow's website team described the mix as follows:
DJ Shadow’s "All Basses Covered" set has morphed and evolved to incorporate as many different contemporary genres of urban and electronic music as possible. From hardcore rap to footwork and juke and beyond, Shadow has combed the web to curate seamless and dexterous blends of the most progressive sounds bubbling up from the underground. ‘Too hard?’ ‘Too future?’ Or just too raw? As always, DJ Shadow has provoked crucial flashpoints of discussion about the discipline of DJ’ing that have defined our turbulent times.

I remember him saying that he was going to eventually post the mix, but I honestly didn't think he'd get around to it
| | | I'll check this out. Also the link needs to be fixed, it doesn't work if you click it, but works fine by simply c & p. (if it's just me,
then ignore this).
Anyway, thanks for sharing.
| | | Link should work now
| | | Bumped this yesterday, it's solid. I dont understand what promoter booked Shadow and wasnt expecting a hyphy/downtempo/trip-hop etc set.. mindboggiling
| | | this sounds awesome. Going to have to check it out.
| | | Didn't really dig the set too much myself, but I don't understand why he got shut down for it. Thoughts on pre planned/written DJ sets everyone???
| | | Lot of guys "script" their mixes ahead of time; Shadow might be a DJ, but he specialises more in turntablism than creating a cohesive mix. That's why he plots them in advance
| | | Oh! This is the set he played when I saw him in Detroit a few weeks ago. It makes even more sense now, 'cause right before the end he said he's hit up every genre besides Dn'B and then he hit that too. All Basses Covered.
| | | So at which point exactly he was cut? I'm in 28th minute and I really dig it.

Used to specialize in turntablism, most of his gigs are "DJ sets" now so no tables for the table master. I understand having an idea of the set you want to play, but as a DJ you should know you're tracks inside and out so you can take a random turn you hadn't planned if the crowd isn't feeling it. I'm not saying he should lose his integrity as an artist in order to please the fans, but play through some moods and sounds you're digging, see what the people react to and go from there. Ultimately you're there to make people move, if they're not moving you're doing it wrong. I figured you of all people would have the same opinion here Dev, you do DJ after all don't you?
| | | I wish I hadn't missed that Detroit show
| | | One of my friends showed me this a few days ago. I guess it is kinda abstract sounding...
| | | so groundbreaking
| | | This is pretty good.
| | | this is indeed somewhat future

Yeah but he does all this, just prior to the actual performance. He's a performance DJ, not someone who makes his money from simply cutting and blending. I have no problems with an artist working out his set prior because he might not be the greatest at mixing live, in front of an audience and on the spot. Very few people can do that, and even less can do that well. It doesn't mean that he doesn't know his tracks inside and out (sup Theo Parrish), because of course he does he specializes in turntablism, he has to know what he's scratching just so he can get a desired result out of it. I would rather he do a mix like this at home using whatever software to help him and make it sound good, than for him to pull of a Jamie XX and fuck up drastically on the night

Also to just touch on this for a second: he's not some local in-house dj spinning the friday night tunes. He was booked as dj shadow, playing a dj shadow set. He can play whatever he wants to play, because they've come to see him
| | | this is p cool so far.
| | | k nevermind

As I said, he doesn't have to play what the people want to play, play wants to play but keep it in the feel that the audience
responds to

if he's the main attraction as opposed to the set itself, wouldn't it be more of a performance if he actually did all then mixing live, then?
just a thought, everything else you said is pretty hard to disagree with

Exactly

And miss out you did, my friend. The Majestic was fuckin' packed.

Only if you plan on standing still the entire night watching him instead of doing your thing. This ain't a rock concert or a stage show
| | | this is really cool
| | | i used to make beats for this guy when we were in high school
really super proud of how far he's come
| | | fuck if i know anything about this kind of thing, but im enjoying what he done did here.

Okay so he say's he's gonna play the tracks he likes to play, which again is something I agree with, I never said he should play the tracks the audience wants him to play. What i'm trying to get across here is if you've got such a vast amount of styles you wanna play, and the crowd reacts to 3 of 6 said styles, why not play your fav tracks in those styles. When I go out there i'm not letting the crowd tell me what to play, but if I can steer my set in the mood that gets a particular crowd dancing I will do that, i'd rather see people moving and having a good time because then I can feed off that. DJ'ing is all about giving people just enough of what they want, then taking it away from them, cause after that they'll want more, and the cycle continues.

Well for a starter, if you're going to a DJ Shadow gig you're more than likely going to be familiar with his style and know that, more than likely, he's gonna be jumping back and forth through a huge amount of genres and styles. Is every single thing that he's going to play go down well with everybody? Probably not, because you can't please everyone. Also, common sense would indicate that if he started playing some stuff that completely silenced the crowd he's abandon it pretty quickly to the point where I don't really think we even need to mention it at all. Also, if he's not mixing live how would you suggest he suddenly cut over the top of it and double back to the [insert genre here] tip he was on 5 minutes ago that got the crowd jumping? Especially if he was in a bigger venue, with a synced light show and all. Again, he's not a local dj here. He's touring his sound, and he's not limited to playing x amount of styles, his fanbase has already dictated that they're going to be comfortable with anything

Thanks man, I've only been doing it for about 5 years now! And to be honest I also disagree with this as well. Give them everything, because it's only going to be alive for an hour or two, then have them come back and give them something entirely different. Fuck cycles, that's stagnant
| | | you guys have a difference in philosophy on this, and I guess I see both sides. I don't think that we should ever reach a point where we "require" a certain artist to perform in a certain way to be perceived at successful. But, at the same time, we are reaching a point where someone who makes a playlist in Ableton ahead of time, hits play, and spends the entire night messing with the EQ is seen as on the same level as someone who spins a cohesive set, constantly mixing in and pulling tracks, swapping basslines and combining elements from different tracks together effectively to create a real performance.
I'm not really knowledgeable enough to get into it any deeper than that, but it's interesting to see what you guys have to say about it. It's definitely an interesting topic that I think is very important as electronic music continues to grow and grow in popularity and scope.
| | | but sorry Josh, I agree with Deviant on the main focus of his argument.
