Mumford and Sons Chart Six
2012-10-06 by Davey Boy STAFF | 75 Comments
If anyone ever had any doubt as to the crossover potential of English folk-rockers Mumford and Sons, then the last couple of weeks have surely ended them.

Hot on the heels of reportedly selling over 600,000 copies of their 2nd LP 'Babel', Billboard is reporting that the quartet have just matched The Beatles in landing 6 singles in the U.S Hot 100.

The last time this was achieved was by the aforementioned Fab 4 back in September of 1964, although The Beatles' all-time record of 14 looks to be in little danger.

It's funny, their biggest flaw is that they're repetitive... And yet this somehow qualifies them as something worth expending the energy to hate intensely. Wouldn't it be more worth saying "This is a meh band" and be indifferent about it all?

Honestly I prefer this band charting well over some pop shit[2]

I just don't understand the hate this band get. Seriously, in every musical genre there is repetition in song structures and songwriting(just check out bands like ACDC as an example) If they were utterly bad in songwriting I wouldn't say anything to defend them, but the guys know how to write a song.

I don't hate this band, but what bothers me is that people who only listen to the radio and other mainstream music love this band because "they're so original because they make folk music" when in fact there are a lot of bands out there doing the same thing and getting no credit for it

I find irony in this. So many of my friends claim this is a reimergence of rock music in the mainstream. I on the other hand think that since Arcade Fire won record of the year, the music industry finally saw the potential in Indie rock and will now bastardize it like everything else. Mumford & Sons are not terrible but they create audaciously average music which the music industry will force feed the masses.

HAHAHA thats a good one.

You can hear one of this bands songs and you will know what everything else they have written sounds like. Not to mention it's shitty pop folk and their "banjo player" doesn't even play a real banjo, he plays a Banjitar. How about you go and learn the real intrument.

You speak the truth. The reason there's so much hate for Mumford is because they're getting all the love and credit when there are bands like Grizzly Bear that deserve it much more but don't appeal to the pop music fans of the world.

Proving my point from a few days ago.

This websites hardcore and metal bias strikes again.

90% of the comments here are about how much this band sucks. Honestly, what the fuck is the point of posting news if you know the band is just gonna get shit on? Cause everyone here is a fucking guitar virtuoso and just fucking shreds the shit out of it right?

The only thing that seems to be valued on this site is technical ability. Somehow shitty metal and hardcore riffs and cop-out double kicks are better.

I got nothin.

Once again, your anti-hardcore and anti-metal self-serving bias strikes. And once again, you clearly know nothing about this site. Between the Buried and Me and Periphery are very technical metal bands yet are very often panned on this site. Can you explain to me as to why that is so? Probably can't.

Also, name me a list of recently hyped hardcore bands on this site. I can guarantee that you won't come up with a lot.

This site isn't nearly as uniform as you convultedly envision it to be.

Are you a fucking idiot, or do you just play one on the Internet? There's just as many (if not more) indie tards as there are metal tards.

If there were more "indie tards", this article would actually be more popular.

Most of the fuckwits on here are teenagers into metal and hardcore.

Keep thinking that women arent into music as much as men, though.

Ohhh right, right. I got it now.

So because two shitty metal bands are oft-criticized, its supposed to suggest there still isnt a metal/hardcore-bias?

Most hardcore is garbage anyway, so ill spare you the list. Most of the time, harsh reviews on metal and hardcore are just dipshits whining over how much better the album could/should be. Just because there arent many hyped hardcore artists on here recently doesnt mean it still isnt the more popular genre and doesnt mean there is no bias.

"The olive garden of folk" I lol'd

This band isn't that terrible but I can't stand them for all the hype they get.

All the reasons I have for hating them sound retarded when I explain them to people and it makes me
sound like a hipster douche. But seriously everyone talks about how they're so cool because they're
folky and apparently are so emotionally deep and involving. They're just so insubstantial for all the
appreciation they get.

lol the only difference is the tuning and amount of strings, it's the same fucking fingerstyle technique. if you can competently play the "banjitar", you can play a banjo... as you would also be saying that somebody playing a guitar in open tuning doesn't know how to play the "real" instrument! naturally

and people not hear what kind of shit is on the radio that could be breaking these records instead of mumford? get off your high horses, even i don't like this band but i'm not dumb enough to delude myself into thinking music or "folk" couldn't have met a bigger enemy than that of marcus mumford
