Pete Townshend: Who He?

2012-09-04 by JohnXDoesn't | 17 Comments
Well that was to be the name of Pete Townshend's autobiography set for release on Oct 8th. But he changed it to the more definitive WHO I AM. I liked Who He better. Or even the New Orleans Saints slogan of who 'dat. Who I Am seems so final, so grandiose, so....Pete Townshend. It's just too perfect. Couple it with the very upfront mugshot that was chosen for the cover and it promises to be the tell all autobiography of the year.

Never mind the ardent Who fan can most likely tell you as much about Pete has he can tell about himself. Never one to be short of opinion, insight, wisdom, and a healthy amount of B.S., over the years Townshend has been one of the more outspoken high profile performers in all of rock. What does he speak about? Well, mostly about himself, his ideas, his art, and his worldview and any given time. What can be left?

Well at 67 years old, apparently a wrap up. Because for all of Townshend's ramblings over the years in song and by way of the written word, consistency has never been a strong point with the exception of his spiritual beliefs. Which we often found him at war with, as well. A deeply varied artist and complex individual, who exactly is Pete Townshend? It's a question Pete now promises to answer once and for all. Which if anything like his prior answers will leave just as many new questions as ones answered.

According to official press release by the books publisher, THIS is Pete Townshend. And in the book he will elaborate on all:

... is a Londoner and a Mod.

... auditioned for Roger Daltrey while sitting on a bed that hid a fugitive.

... wanted The Who to be called The Hair.

... loved The Everly Brothers, but not that drawling dope Elvis.

... wanted to be a sculptor, a journalist, a dancer and a graphic designer.

... became a musician, composer, librettist, fiction writer, literary editor, sailor.

... smashed his first guitar onstage, in 1967, by accident.

... heard the voice of God on a vibrating bed in rural Illinois.

... invented the Marshall stack, feedback and the concept album.

... once speared Abbie Hoffman in the neck with the head of his guitar.

... inspired Jimi Hendrix's pyrotechnical stagecraft.

... is partially deaf in his right ear.

... stole his windmill guitar playing from Keith Richards.

... followed Keith Moon off a hotel balcony into a pool and nearly died.

... did too much cocaine and nearly died.

... drank too much and nearly died.

... detached from his body in an airplane, on LSD, and nearly died.

... helped rescue Eric Clapton from heroin.

... is banned for life from Holiday Inns.

... was embroiled in a tabloid scandal that has dogged him ever since.

... has some explaining to do.

... is the most literary and literate musician of the last 50 years.

... planned to write his memoir when he was 21.

... published this book at 67.

Wow lot's of stuff. But he also has a recent life and love and career and we would like to know about that. Also rumors swirl about his sexual orientation, possible "experimenting" with bisexuality in his youth, and sleeping with Lennon, Jaggar, and Bowie. Hopefully not all at once, or even in the same week.

Hey don't kill the messenger Pete mostly generated this horse shit himself at some point over the years, even once proclaiming "I know what its like to be a woman because i've been a woman!"

Great Pete! Like the promo says, you've got some explaining to do. But not to this reporter. This reporter loves you regardless, Pete. And I hope you sell a bunch of books.

Pick up YOUR copy for under $20. Quite a bargain to read about a life that is more interesting than your own by about 1000%, and always will be.
