It Was 25 Years Ago Today... 2012-08-30 by JohnXDoesn't | 43 Comments |
Well ok it was 25 years ago tomorrow. But it could be today if you are reading this tomorrow. So we'll just let sleeping dogs lie. It was a good Beatles reference for a big Beatles fan.
August 31st marks the 25th anniversary of the release of Michael Jackson's BAD album. A landmark recording for reasons still unknown, the truth of the matter is it's half great and half ok. Which makes it all good, of course. But whatever the case the great half managed to garner a record at the time 5 Number One Singles. And that ain't bad, no. It's BAD. But nothing was that simple with Michael Jackson. And so while BAD is not consistently great as an album, it didn't have to be. Michael knew just what to do with it.
A special album for fans, BAD saw Michael move further away from his R&B roots and closer to the pop center where kids, soccer moms, Pepsi, and the mainstream could embrace him even further. Thriller may have cemented Jackson as the biggest selling pop star of all time, but BAD would be the album used to make him an icon. And his legion of near militant fans could not get enough of BAD or Michael or his quest for pop dominance. In fact, album and artist were as one and the same in the eyes of many. Such was the skill of MJ's marketing machine, the determination of the artist, and the devotion of his fans.
So hear we have BAD at 25, and it's a big deal for many. To mark the occasion you can make a cash donation to Michael's estate for his impoverished kids, and his estate will send you some stuff. Stuff such as the Bad 25th Anniversary Edition Box Set for $35. It contains the album, unreleased material, a live DVD, booklet and a lot of packaging. To be released September 18, available at Amazon and other online retailers.
Cheap like me? Well good for you. For us we have Spike Lee's documentary BAD25 to be aired on ABC Thanksgiving Night. Lee worked closely with the Jackson estate while making the film and was able to compile never before seen footage of the pop star at work and at the peak of his creative powers in studio and onstage. Lee is said to capture the phenomena the BAD album, video, record breaking tour, and artist created and became very well, and it's sure to make a fun holiday diversion.
BAD is the third and final Jackson album produced by Quincy Jones and many feel Jackson the musical artist suffered once he and Jones parted ways. Whatever MJ's albums were and weren't at the time, for the most part they were consistent and uniform and with a clear musical vision. But after BAD not so much, as Jacko became more Wacko and drawn into things nothing to do with music. However for at least half an album before his downward spiral Jackson was still great. And I guess that is a good enough reason to remember, and celebrate his HIStory. If just a little.

This is news, how?
|

Michael Jackson was pretty terrible, to be honest, and kind of accounts for the lacking taste in common society.
|
| |
This would be better off as a blog post, but I guess only 'staff' get to use that
|
| |
Ok, I lol'd a few times on this one. Never got the love for MJ.

"Never got the love for MJ"
Really? Wow

tbh i like these articles if not for the writing for the terrible users who come in droves to express their even worse opinions
|
| |
oh shit a children of bodom fan thinks this article sucks better stop writing jxd
|
| |
I like reading hilarious stuff, but when I try and defend my favorite music site, these articles don't really help.
|
| |
these are the only articles with any type of personality. before this sputnik news was just paraphrasing what users read from other articles/band websites resulting in
"generic post-rock band with 1 EP that has 5 votes are set to release and LP soon. here's the track listing"
i mean i'm just as guilty for that cause i admittedly don't put much effort into the few news articles that i post. i just don't understand all the bitching
|
| |
oh cruz
|
| |
"i just don't understand all the bitching"
unfortunately the internet gives all sorts of morons a voice so they will always feel the need to bitch and moan about the most minute things to feel important, such is the way it goes
|
| |
morons still have a right to voice their opinion
just not without ridicule
|
| |
and that's next to impossible on the web

This is a good laugh, better than regular news articles where you're just like "oh cool" and move on. People getting offended by this is actually pretty lol worthy

These are funny when thrown in occasionally. But there's too many lately and they become more tiresome and tldr than funny
