Pop Music Scientifically Bland

2012-07-26 by El. Psy. Congroo. | 62 Comments
Reuters has published an article which highlights the findings of a recent study which found that pop music has steadily become louder and more homogeneous in the past 50 years. The study, conducted by a team at the Spanish National Research Council, was performed using
a song archive called the Million Song Database to gather data on pop songs released in the last 50 years.

The team was lead by A.I. specialist Joan Sierra, who shared the findings of the study in the journal Scientific Reports:

Quote:
We obtained numerical indicators that the diversity of transitions between note combinations - roughly speaking chords plus melodies - has consistently diminished in the last 50 years.

The study also marks the first time that the steady increase of volume in pop songs over time has been properly studied using a large database and published.

"Justin Bieber sucks because science"

Damn right. And now we can finally have conversations like this:

"Today's music is garbage, it all sounds the same."

"I like it. Music is subjective."

"Bitch, science."

^^^ Study = valid.

I would think you would find the same thing if they were to study any other genre.

And I can only imagine what other stuff they could have been doing instead of this pointless study.

Yeah they could've studied death metal and found it really is just one guy with his head stuck down a toilet doing the vocals for every dm album ever.

Study is kind of bullshit saying pop music all sounds the same mathematically because all music sounds the same mathematically, like there are only 12 notes ya know, to a computer all music probably sounds the same

To anyone doubting the legitimacy of this: Yes, there are only twelve notes. But there's such thing as timbre, and tonal qualities... Then there's tempo, time signature, song structures... And even volume was tested in this. Oh, and within the whole notes thing, there are different ways to play them. Octaves, for instance. And something mentioned, chords. We mostly play the equivalent of power chords in everything now, if not singular notes.

The point is that mainstream music now is mostly in the same keys, tempos, time signatures, the tonal qualities are mostly the same because we're all using the same instruments, tones for the instruments, and so therefore timbre, and even, the same level of loudness.

So, yeah.

Most modern producer's goal is to get as close to the red as possible when mixing shit
Like put on a record from the 70's and you gotta crank that shit just to hear it, but it's clear as fuck and no distortion or anything so yeah quiet is good
