Dio reunite without Dio

2012-05-18 by Voivod STAFF | 94 Comments
The lineup Ronny James Dio (R.I.P.) assembled during the '80s in order to form his personal band, decided to reunite for a series of live concerts under the name Last In Line and recruit a new singer to fill the huge shoes Dio left behind.

New singer is Andy Freeman (ex Lynch Mob). Keyboard player Claude Schnell commented on Freeman's vocals and said that the new singer did a great job in covering Dio's vocal lines. Furthermore, he said that the band is not intimidated by comments posted over the net, stating that after this reunion Freeman has serious chances in becoming one of the most hated singers in metal.

Who is even in this lineup? Vivian Campbell, Jimmy Bain and...? I really doubt Vinny Appice is wasting time with this.

I don't see what the problem is though. Dio didn't write this stuff by himself.

They are fully entitled to play Dio's material, but if Dio isn't actually there, what's the point in doing it?

Nothing more, nothing less.

Yea, pretty much what Voivod said.

I've nothing against them wanting to play again, especially since they're not using the Dio name.

But I'm pretty secure in saying that almost none of the fans want this. Dio was the reason his songs worked in the first place.

so because dio died they should never play music again? cool logic.
If they feel they want to play together again they could just, you know, write new material. Doubt that thought crossed your mind, though.

And yeah, what Maniac said about RJD.

It's different since Dio's voice is unmatched and made the songs stand out. Take a reunion like Death. His vox weren't anything extraordinary but his guitar was and that can be emulated alot easier than Dio's voice

A tribute band consists of musicians who weren't part of the band they are paying tribute to.

Hence, Last In Line are something else.

@ MetallicOpeth

but his guitar was and that can be emulated alot easier than Dio's voice

True.

Voivod's current guitarist Dan Mongrain does an excellent job in emulating the work of Piggy (R.I.P.)
