Deftones to record this summer
2012-04-02 by Jeremy Bentham | 119 Replies | 3590 Views

Deftones front man Chino Moreno announced recently in an interview that the band are going into the studio to record their highly anticipated follow-up to 2010's Diamond Eyes. Nick Raskulinecz will return as producer.

The alternative metallers, who released their sixth studio album 'Diamond Eyes' in 2010, revealed over the weekend that they completed the writing stage of their new album on March 28 and that recording will begin on July 9. Nick Raskulinecz is once again confirmed to produce the album.

Speaking to Chilean website Latercera.com, the band's frontman Chino Moreno described their new album as "futuristic" and "more dynamic".

Asked about the band's seventh album, Moreno said: "I know everybody says this, but I believe this is the best record we’ve made. I’m very enthusiastic, because it sounds futuristic in comparison to our last one, so it feels like a step forward. The songs are very different from each other, not heavier or slower, but more dynamic, going towards several directions; it’s heavy, but beautiful."

With Chino's description, it sounds like they'll be embracing a lot more electronic influences in their music. I know they've always incorporated things like trip-hop, but I would be surprised if they didn't use a lot more of it this go around.

I'm guessing it'll either be pretty good with one or two gems, or epic throughout.

Diamond Eyes is right up there with White Pony as one of Deftones' best. I'm hoping for some kickass new tracks in the coming months and another big tour, but topping the BlackDiamondSkye tour with Alice in Chains and Mastodon will be pretty tough.

Still, can't help but get excited when new Deftones music is on the way.

Of course I expect a rash response to my post but lets not deny the downtuned, simplistic nature of a bunch of open power chords that is a staple of nu-metal. I'm just curious as to what all of you consider nu-metal? It's like "whoa, I don't like nu-metal cuz I might get shot down on Sputnik so the Deftones couldn't be nu-metal". They still have alot of Around the Fur and White Pony to them, it just feels like they've white-washed their aggression and I personally think it sucks.

As far as I understand it, the basic definition of nu-metal is just metal with some elements of grunge or hip hop. Nothing wrong with that. Just because a genre is mostly bad doesn't make every band of that genre bad. Also @ Diamond Eyes there's a difference between "overhyped" and "highly anticipated"

I don't know I figure there is way more to this band then just quote-on-quote "nu-metal riffs".This band has dynamics especially on Diamond Eyes where there is some atmospheric parts blended into the songs.Sure maybe they're not super prominent in the songs but they're still there and the guitars are doing a lot of interesting things as well.
