Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard has given an update on the band's progress in recording their 10th studio album.
The axeman, who is currently promoting his new LP with his side project Brad, has said that the band are "not in a rush", but that they may only be "a song or two away" from finishing.
Speaking to Rolling Stone about the follow-up to 2009's 'Backspacer', Gossard said: "We've recorded some songs, and we're going to record and write some more. It might be that we're a song away or two, or it might be that we're going to record six or seven more songs.
"I think the main thing is that we're not in a rush and there’s no urgency to it. The most important thing is that we put something out that continues to expand our boundaries rather than trying to follow what we've done in the past. I think it's a good time to hopefully continue to experiment, and continue to shake it up."
He continued: "We want people to go 'Wow, that’s kind of weird for Pearl Jam,' and then 10 years later they can go, 'Oh, that’s my favorite period', which is always kind of what happens."
Asked if he could describe the songs for the band's new record, Gossard said that the album was "refreshingly cool" and that the band would make sure it didn't sound too polished.
He added: "It's just us in the studio screwing around, not taking it too seriously. I think that's one of the biggest problems in rock is people thinking too much, putting too much emphasis on getting things perfect or completely sorted out. Sometimes that sound of not having everything sorted out is kind of cool."
Pearl Jam will headline this year's Isle Of Wight Festival alongside Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen. The festival takes place from June 22–24 next summer.
Fuck yes! Sweet!
Cool, Backspacer grew on me
Really liked Backspacer, excited for this.
awesome. though i guess it won't be like Ten, i can't wait. if its atleast as good as backspacer i'm fine with it
btw PJ20 is a great documentary
Man, these guys just pump out albums and they're all pretty damn good. Awesome band!

"and that the band would make sure it didn't sound too polished. "
in other words, theyll make sure it sucks
@TAB- No dude. In other words, this sounds like a more 'grungy' Pearl Jam as opposed to the super polished pop rock album that was Backspacer. Don't get me wrong, Backspacer was great, but how the hell does "not too polished" and Pearl Jam sound out of place for you?
Pretty stoked for this. I just really want to see them live
Digging: Two Gallants - Two Gallants
i'll be looking foward to this. Love Pearl jam
Definitely one of the most consistent rock bands of their era, I can't honestly think of a single bad album they've ever released, so this should be good.
What's up with the retarded new users?
One of my favorites since 1993. Hopefully I can finally see them live. Would mean the world to me.
Not that big of a PJ fan, but definitely curious what 'experimental Pearl Jam' means.
They've always been experimental, and they'll certainly never attempt to make another Ten (that they would is an idiotic notion), and their sound is more or less the antithesis of "polished."
In terms of experimentation, I'm hoping for something in the same vein as "You Are" or "Sleight of Hand".
lol they aren't consistent at all
I bet you're one of the kids that hate good bands when they are successful.
They aren't telling much about the new album but I hope it'll be out soon.

"I bet you're one of the kids that hate good bands when they are successful."
heh heh you got him good job
man it's almost as if pearl jam aren't a really uninteresting, mediocre band that were never actually good
Backspacer was pretty good but hopefully they'll do better with this.
Digging: Nektar - Journey to the Centre of the Eye
The last album by these guys was Binaural which was quite uneven. Not really stoked for this.

Cool, always room on my shelves for some more Pearl Jam!
Pearl Jam is the best! Very hopeful for this, I've been a huge fan of all the albums.

pearl jam fucking rules. if you've never seen them live, do yourself a favor and go see em.
greg84...the last album by these guys was binaural???... yeah y2k was a quite a scare eh? but the millenium party made up for it! goodbye 90's!
saw pearl jam in september was probably the longest set of songs I have ever seen by one band... like 30ish... was fuckin awesome and they had mudhoney open for them! bad ass band
Great news. Backspacer was a disappointment and easily PJ’s weakest album. Any departure from that will be welcomed. Many of PJ’s more interesting songs (Sleight of Hand, Help Help, You Are, etc.) are of the experimental variety (experimental for PJ that is). I for one am really looking forward to hearing where they go with this. As Stone said, hopefully this release will be “kind of weird for Pearl Jam” and our “favorite period” of newer Pearl Jam music. I just hope the release comes sooner rather then later.
sweet, Backspacer was ok but i'm waiting for something better.
I can't wait...
I couldn't ever get into this band like I did Soundgarden or other bands from the 90's, but they have some really good singles.
