kind of a misleading news title tbh. still pissed my dad saw them last year with Pavement and I didn't.
whaaaatttt? really unexpected news.
Yeah, i'd fix up the news title
Sonic Youth Future Uncertain maybe?
Digging: ASC - Imagine The Future
band hasn't been relevant for awhile. lame anyways... if this means a split
Digging: CZARFACE - Every Hero Needs a Villain
I'm too scared to read the article but I hope the title references Sonic Youth titling a new album 'quits'. PLEASE HIGHER POWERS MAKE IT SO
band hasn't been relevant for awhile? Excuse me? Sonic Youth will always be relevant. Just because you're replacing your tampons with your ratshit techno and fag rock, doesn't make Sonic Youth less relevant to the music industry. douche.
Jack and Meg White split years ago, doesn't change anything about the music. Sonic Youth will not be breaking up because of this. Who knows, maybe they'll enter a 4th decade with a 4th transition. They rarely disappoint.
hahahahaha butthurt fans are always the best
haven't been good in years
Digging: Denzel Curry - 32 Zel / Planet Shrooms
Always good for a laugh.
ratshit techno and fag rock
got me pinned, man
Saying Sonic Youth "isn't relevant" proves your ignorance to music. That's like saying 'The Cure isn't relevant" or "The Beatles aren't relevant." It's a pathetic statement, plus it undermines the second half of your post.
hey remember that album the beatles released last year wasnt it awesome aoty 4sure
Relevant to the current music scene.
Godamn ratshit techno
The Eternal was released in 2009. They're still actively touring. They've influenced bands like No Age, Deerhunter, and most of the lo fi, shoegaze, noise rock genres.
Saying that Eve 6 hasn't been relevant for some time would be an accurate statement, but a band still touring and producing albums, EPs, soundtracks, etc as being irrelevant, and influencing 50% of the genres people purchase these days, is an ignorant statement.
50%? That's a pretty big call, buddy.
the beatles are so influential. especially on black metal
Yeah good call, that's probably a bit of an overstatement. Maybe more like 15% now that I think about it. Still, they're relevant.
and some could consider "helter skelter" the birth of modern metal. I don't quite agree but it's been said. By some asshole.
The Beatles invented heavy metal, you fool.
hey whens the last time they released a good album
btw daydream nation is easily one of the worst albums ever
"the beatles are so influential. especially on black metal"
Yeah, I can really hear alot of Abbey Road in Vikingligr Veldi
theyre earlier releases will always be relevant and continue to influence people, but a lot of people dont even know sonic youth are still putting shit out. the newer releases hardly have any impact.
AsoTamaki, you misspelled "Kinks".
On topic, this really sucks. I've never had the chance to see them live, now it seems like I never will. :[
"The Beatles invented heavy metal, you fool."
on another note, tis a sad day for music
Well that's a subjective answer. As a fan of Sonic Youth I'd say 2009. The Eternal had some great songs on it - Antenna was one of their best of their career imo. A few songs were below their standards but at least 75% of the album was good.
Rather Ripped was solid, Incinerate is a great track, Do You Believe in Rapture, great track. Sonic Nurse is the last album Pitchfork awarded a BNM to, but RR appeared on their top 50 of 2006 I think. Some may say Murray Street which was 2002. The only time the band has faltered was late 90s/early 00s. Not much going on from 96-2001.
But Goo? Sister? Even Washing Machine? Underrated.
Yeah, as a fan.
A Thousand Leaves was the last thing that had any impact whatsoever. How many years has it been since Washing Machine?
"band hasn't been relevant for awhile? Excuse me? Sonic Youth will always be relevant. Just because you're replacing your tampons with your ratshit techno and fag rock, doesn't make Sonic Youth less relevant to the music industry. douche. "
never got into these guys really, ive been meaning to dl daydream nation though. i dont really like pavement though does that mean Ill probably not like Sonic Youth as well?
"The Beatles invented heavy metal, you fool"
I dunno...Helter Skelter was pretty br00tal for the 60's...
I don't like Pavement, but I love Sonic Youth. So you might like 'em. Give them a shot.
I'm going to get flamed but I agree with UhhKris. Band is massively overrated for one good album and they were nothing special.
Not liking a band =/= band being massively overrated.
You'd be surprised how many of your favorite bands are influenced one way or another by Sonic Youth...
Sad news btw.
Band is bland. Kinda indifferent about the misleading news.
was like the perfect couple
Sad news. :[
Sad day, I like this band quite a bit.
Wait till later
This gonna cause a Teen Age Riot
Digging: Arakain - Thrash The Trash
wow thats unexpected
one of the most consistent bands around. I dunno what everyone's on about them not being good since 20 years ago, Rather Ripped, Sonic Nurse and Murray St. are all excellent
fuck man, they're one of the only bands i ever wanted to see live.
this is not the end
No, it is not. Just because they'll no longer be performing in bed together, it doesn't mean they'll stop performing onstage. Relax.
Wow, Sonic Youth has been a band that's been around since I was born and that I've never bothered to listen to, like NOFX, and now they're calling it quits but unfortunately I doubt I'll be listening any time soon OH WAIT IT'S NOT THE BAND THAT'S BREAKING UP
Kim and Thurston separating is a far cry from "calling it quits."
their last few albums have been quite good in that predictable latter era SY kind of way, they've become too comfortable and homogenous with their sound but still
because this is sonic youth and there's more discussion about their influence and "importance" than the actual music it seems like a lot of people just blanket-dismiss their recent output because the general rock critic perception is that they no longer have their finger on the pulse of indie rock or whatever. forming your own opinions is too much work
their late career work is pretty f'in excellent though : (
their late career work is pretty f'in excellent though : (
yeah a lot of it is, my other comment wasn't supposed to sound too negative
murray street rules
Wait, band stopped redefining genres but still put out consistently great material? Well shit.... they totally went downhill
Where the fuck did it say that the band split up
Only Thurston and Kim split up
yeah fuck this article title
still, sonic youth is one of the best bands of all time and kim and thurston were like the ultimate rock couple so this is terrible awful news
yo let's keep bitching about how the title is unclear that'll change things.
i mean it has in the past, it got the misleading title of the weezer bassist shit changed
I posted this before passing out after taking the first ever joint in my life
ohhh and so sad, Sonic Youth were awesome
really hope they stay together as a band, i'd love to see them someday.
Same here, have yet to see them live : (
i'm more sad over thurston and kim breaking up than if sonic youth broke up
Hopefully this will be a positive change for the both of them and I really, really hope that this doesn't mean we'll never see another Sonic Youth album again. Some time off might be best, I just hope it isn't permanent.
Digging: The Homeless Gospel Choir - You Work So Hard Just to Be Like Everyone Else
yeah i heard about this. that's sad
they will still fuck
hey dickhead eve 6 are relevant
Thurston Moore's 2011 output is good
Who the hell are Eve 6?
Separation is going to be an awesome album!
Digging: Refused - Freedom
I wanna put my tender heart in a blender; watch it spin around to a beautiful oblivion.
REM, then this. Even if you don't like these bands you have to appreciate that if Sonic Youth were to end 2011 would have seen the demise of 2 bands people will look back on in 30/40 years and say "that mattered."
they're kinda like rush
they're kinda like rush
boring? contrived? fans are stupid?
Stfu someguest and how do you like our six point lead?
i don't know what to think
other than ron washington can boogie
And I thought this would be one of those bands, one of those relationships even, that would last until death.
You've still got the Lions (assuming you're a fan).
Of course. It's been a bad day for me - the Tigers season is ending and the University of Michigan got smoked by the green losers.
Ah. It's an interesting match-up tomorrow between the Lions and Niners. You think the Lions will remain undefeated? I for one think SF's blowout last week against TB was a fluke. They're good, but they're not that good. I do think Alex Smith will surprise some people though. Detroit on the other hand are a scary team. I'm a die-hard Packers fan, always have been, and that Detroit Lions team makes me nervous.
Kim is now single huh?! I wonder if she's interested in a 20-year old Loser (in a beautiful way!) ?
I mean she's still pretty hot !
"btw daydream nation is easily one of the worst albums ever"
Not only is this needlessly hyperbolic, it's wrong. Just wrong.
I am a very sad panda. DN is easily one of my favorite albums of all time.
Digging: Milton Nascimento and Lo Borges - Clube da Esquina
Splitting up that record collection will be a barrel of laughs
Ohh well, Haven't been intrest in them for a long time
COULDWINARABBIT IS GONNA TRY TO HAVE SEX WITH KIM GORDON HARD!!!!
but like if I don't this kinda sucks cause they're the best live band ever and holy shit do they make
lots good of music lots of the time and rarely make bad music most of the time.
Kim and Thurston are both available for Miles omg
man have you ever seen Thurston the man has spent the last 40 years of his life on hard drugs there is no way in shit he can get his dick up.
I mean kim has fared no better but if I was stoned enough I'd think she was 22 and hot.
I mean they have still done a shitload better than Kim Deal and Frank Black cause where they would spend the fight club money on meth to stay skinny the pixies clearly spent it all on hot pockets.
hahaha you are on fire
