Stradivarius sells for $15M

A prized Stadivarius violin has broken the world record for the sale of a single musical instrument at auction in London.
The instrument, named the Lady Blunt after its original owner, sold for £9,800,000 (over $15,000,000), obliterating the previous world record of $3,900,000 for a Guarneri del Gesù violin set in 2007. The violin had been donated to the auction by the Nippon Music Foundation in order to raise money for the Japanese tsunami relief fund; the name of the successful bidder has not been revealed.
The Lady Blunt is a notorious instrument in classical circles, with only the Lady Tennant (a previous world record holder costing over $2,000,000) and the Messiah (currently found in the Ashmolean collection in Oxford and believed to be the only example never to have been played) rivalling it in fame among Stradivari violins.
