Phil Collins to Retire?

There's sad news in the air tonight: former Genesis drummer and long-time solo artist Phil Collins, 60, is planning on an unceremonious retirement from the music industry, citing health problems and his perception that he is overstaying his welcome.
In a recent article of FHM, Collins states that, contrary to Mike Tyson's opinion in The Hangover, he feels that people are "getting sick of [him]" and that it's "a good time to stop" because he feels out of place in the current music scene.
He added, "I look at the MTV Music Awards and I think, 'I can't be in the same business as this...' I don't think anyone's gonna miss me."
Physiologically, Collins has developed tinnitus and other forms of hearing problems, dislocated vertebrae, and nerve damage in his hands after performing for decades. He no longer can hold his drumsticks; instead, he has to tape them to his hands in order to play. He added, "I'm not worried about not being able to play the drums again; I'm more worried about being able to cut a loaf of bread safely or [build] things for my kids."
Collins, who's sold over 150 million records to date, apologizes for the wanting-to-strangle-him feeling people purportedly have when they hear and see him, stating that he didn't want people to grow to 'hate' him as they do. "It's better that I write myself out of the script entirely," he said.
In an exclusive chat with Sputnikmusic, Phil Collins chimed, "You'll Be In My Heart." Tarzan was unavailable for comment.

But he does seem a little mopey about the people hating him thing. If you're famous, people are going to hate you.

He's right that his time is over, but it's still kind of sad seeing him step aside like that. Good man and a great artist. I hope all goes well for him and that he'll overcome his health problems.

While yes, Phil Collins is kind of a joke at this point, anyone slamming the guy's cred is full of shit. He's been a world-class drummer since the 70's, a distinctive singer and despite his pop solo garbage, he pioneered a lot of recording techniques in the studio too (gated drum sound anyone?) and made fucking millions with his music... you can't hate on his grind.

Heard about his health problems, it is truly sad that he can't properly do what he's been doing his entire life. Obviously he was better as a drummer in Genesis than a vocalist, but both in the band's later and his own career ol' Phil made some pop classics. To use the common phrase: fuck the haters.
