This is pretty great, title track is particularly awesome. Not anywhere as good as Fevers and Mirrors, though.

My theory is that the song Spiritual Machine (The People's Key) is about LeBron James and the city of Cleveland. Please read:

"The people's key
Ringing through arena seats
The black machine
Played it all from memory"

The people's key is Lebron James, the key to Cleveland's success as an NBA team and as a playoff contender. His actions and the reaction of the fans rings though the arena. The black machine is a television, not only allowing worldwide fans a glimpse at the last seven years with LeBron and Cleveland, but immortalizing it, making it known forever.

"A fever dream
Well, I'll come back eventually
To wade into the water
Another and another"

A fever dream is in this case clearly a reference to the the Miami heat, a nightmare for Cleveland, a dream team for the rest of the league. I'll come back eventually is a false reassurance to Cleveland that all will be okay, that playoff contention is still a possiblity even without LeBron. TO WADE INTO THE WATER! Dwayne Wade, Miami located right on the Atlantic ocean, this line is pretty self-explanatory. Another and another refer to Chris Bosh and Ilgaukskas, big acquisitions but ones overshadowed by the James/Wade alliance.

"We go
Form some kind of code
The bodies float
And form some kind of code
The bodies float
Someone's out to know"

Not really sure what this means in the context. It could be that the code is some sort of code or standard of conduct to which the league holds its players, which the Cav's owner Dan Gilbert feels Lebron has broken. The bodies float may be an exaggerated feeling of despair Cleveland fans have fallen into, strong enough to warrant drowning yourself over. Or maybe they feel LeBron has dumped them into the Cuyahoga River.

"Papa hobo
Don't hide your eyes
Mother mountain
Don't kill your unborn child
His day is coming
His day is coming"

This passage represents a means for Cleveland to find comfort among its grief, the hobo being a good symbol for the poverty that plagues the city of Cleveland, Mother mountain and her unborn child being the city and it's nurturing (and oftentimes smothering) ownership the city feels for its sports teams, reminding them that karma does exist, and that perhaps LeBron will receive his just desserts.

A question burns
Beneath the centuries of dirt

Will Cleveland ever win a championship?

"That voice you've heard
Well, every head's a different world
Well, mine's concerned
I boarded up the windows
A catatonic plateau
A backwards black-faced minstrel show"

The voice you've heard is the voice of the press, ESPN and other news stations, former players, current players and managers, everyone giving their two cents on the topic, and sometimes it needs to be shut out, you need to ignore it otherwise it will continue to eat at your mind, like schizophrenia, the voice in your head singing a tune of betrayal of a certain African American, travelling to another city and capturing the attention of all who behold him.

"So just let me go
The prisoner moans
Oh, just let me go
The prisoner moans
No one has to know"

This is fairly ambiguous. The prisoner, I believe, is Lebron, who felt trapped in Cleveland, knowing full well that is he stayed, he would be sentenced to life in that jail... without a ring. No one has to know is sort of an ironic statement, considering the entire nation knew in a one hour special. Perhaps this was Oberst's way of saying that LeBron's ego may have been large enough to actually believe that his departure was subtle.

"Eva Braun went to dye her hair
Little Hitler sighs in his giant's chair
And dreamed of nowhere
And dreamed of nowhere
And dreamed"

Hitler is analogy for Cav's owner Dan Gilbert, watching himself being crushed by enemies in both the East and the West, considers the suicides his reputation will no doubt face, the embarassment and public shame he has inevitable brought upon himself, Eva Braun being Cleveland, his beloved, whom he has dragged into this with hasty words and actions.

"The people's key
Ringing filling everything
The theme repeats
Thinner than the galaxy"

Just a transition of sorts, a reminder that all this talk of LeBron (The People's Key) and his antics have been talked about ad nauseum, repeating and repeating until they've been stretched far too thin.

"Impart to me
Your wisdom and eventually
I'll float into the ether
Another from another"

Just a plea, for anyone who is able to ignore the endless media coverage, the message board chatter, and the general gossip surrounding the NBA's latest development, to impart that knowledge onto Conor so that he may enjoy the haze of his marijuana high in peace.

"We grow
Form some kind of code
A flesh at bone
We form some kind of code
A flesh at bone
No, you're not alone"

One last comfort that Cavs has to remind themselves, that there was a code of honor that was supposedly breached, that these are times when bone meets flesh, tough times, bound to produce some sores because of their pressures, but reminding them that they must be flexible and stick together.

"History bows and it steps aside
In the jungle there's columns of purple light
We're starting over
We're starting over
We're starting
We're starting"

This line wraps up the song and where LeBron is at, trying to make history, realizing that in the jungle of the NBA, many expect the purple light (light is gold, so purple & gold) of the Lakers and Kobe, to be the last hurdle for Lebron's claim to history. The starting over is him wiping the slate clean, and trying to cause the memories of the Cleveland he left behind to just fade away. .

Also worth noting that the prisoner mentioned in the song could be Cleveland, locked out a championship by the People's Key (LeBron), left to rot in the slammer. "The ringing filling everything" a couple of lines down could be the slamming of this cell.
