James Blunt saved your life
2010-11-15 by Nick Butler EMERITUS | 84 Comments

In an astonishing interview with BBC Radio Five Live's John Pienaar, James Blunt has claimed to be partly responsible for preventing World War III.

The incident in question occurred in 1999, while Blunt was serving in Kosovo with NATO, as the lead officer of a troop that had been given direct orders to seize control of Pristina airfield. This task was complicated by the Russian army having the same idea and occupying the airfield first.

'We had 200 Russians lined up pointing their weapons at us aggressively. The direct command came in from general Wesley Clark to overpower them. Various words were used that seemed unusual to us. Words such as 'destroy' came down the radio.' Blunt, however, refused the order - and was supporting by his amusingly-named superior, General Sir Michael Jackson. Blunt remembered Jackson' words as 'I'm not going to have my soldiers be responsible for starting World War Three.' When Pienaar asked Blunt if he believed that WWIII was a possibility had he followed the initial order, Blunt's answer was a categorical yes, and he claimed that had Jackson not intervened, he would have been prepared to risk a court martial.

Reports that most people would rather have suffered through a war than ever heard his music are, as yet, unconfirmed.

I'd already heard this story before, and sure he might exaggerate the issue a bit (seeing as the Cold War was well and truly over by then and Russia would never have risked a war), but everyone is a bit harsh on him. He did a good thing *shrug* And he's proved elsewhere he's a genuinely nice guy and pretty funny too.

So his music is insanely soppy and crap (well, I actually like a bit of his first album but stfu), don't see how that affects the rest of it.

it's been said a few times on this thread, but the guy seems genuinely cool and funny if interviews/tv appearances etc. are to be believed. and this is a pretty awesome thing. he can hardly be accused of publicity-making if it's over a decade since the incident in question happened. frankly, had anyone else done this, people would have been congratulating them.

my ex was really into his first album (her "guilty pleasure"), and from what i heard of it, it was only "beautiful" that was actually insultingly bad. the rest was just so innoffensive and bland that i couldn't remember how a song went a few seconds after i'd heard it, but there's far worse out there.

Yeah, James Blunt is a great guy alright.

"Sir, I want to put my hand up in support of Lily Allen (Thunderer, Sept 16). She’s asking British musicians to galvanise over a serious crime: the death of a great British industry — our music business.

The world over, people are stealing music in its millions in the form of illegal file-sharing. It’s easy to do, and has become accepted by many, but people need to know that it is destroying people’s livelihoods and suffocating emerging British artists.

The music business is made up of thousands of jobbing musicians, producers, mixers and engineers creating and shaping popular music and culture, but illegal file-sharing is cutting off the income from their work. Without the revenue from established artists, record labels cannot fund emerging musicians. They’ll just re-master the Beatles albums again, because they can’t afford to put an amazing new band into a studio to record something that may surpass Sergeant Pepper.

At long last the Government is looking to legislate to protect the industry. Peter Mandelson is looking to engage the internet service providers who, in my opinion, handle stolen goods, and should take much more responsibility. How this legislation pans out, and if it goes through at all, is critical to the survival of the British music business; critical to thousands of jobs; and critical to our ability to nurture and develop great musicians and the songs and albums that we would hope to listen to in the future.

James Blunt
