I wish at bought this at the show I went to, but I really wanted Coyote and decided to wait on it. Trey Spruance make a guest appearance on the album. I thought that was interesting.

not sure i can get into this...saw them at the show in Boston, and it was difficult to digest..Kayo Dot seem to be getting less and less pleasantly melodic, and more dissonant, slow, and oppressive.

@xopethx

You were at the Boston show too! You didn't like it? I thought it was incredible. The only time I felt like sitting down was when they were playing Blue Lambency Downward, but the whole Coyote performance was great.

I noticed Toby didn't do the guitar solo during Wayfarer. After the song ended I thought something sounded different. But I've read interviews about how Choirs was mainly meant to be a studio album and how it posed a great challenge to the band when they decided to play it live.

choirs had dozens or even hundreds of layered tracks; virtually impossible to pull off with a band live.

whereas the rest of their godscography was recorded to be played live

This better be good. I agree that they have been getting more minimalistic, Choirs was truly the best.

which means they needed to take out anything remotely interesting? choirs of the eye, and pretty much everything maudlin did... was pure gold. now toby driver is just boring.

i'm surprised there are so many positive comments towards Kayo Dot after Coyote. Choirs was the only amazing thing this band has done, the rest has been average to shit.

^Disagree. Choirs is the most accessible and heavy, but their other albums are all rewarding IMO. Seeing The first 3 tracks off Coyote live at the Toronto date last night really helped me to appreciate it more. Drummer was off the heezy!

Also, EP interesting.

Disagree. Average in what context? Their musical ability? The way the songs are constructed? How is it average?

Why am I mad? I'm not mad. You're just not making any sense. You obviously don't like it, so there's no point trying to convince you any further that what you're saying has no validity. It's just your personal preferences.

You're right, it is just personal preference. What is it about this band's music post-Choirs that makes it above average for you?

FadedSun

That's a hard question to answer. Choirs is definitely my favorite of theirs, but I like how they venture into new territory on the other albums. I love the chorus sound on the bass in Coyote, and the drums, violin and horns are great in that album. Most people think Toby's vocals aren't that great on this album, but I find them haunting and fitting.

I just listened to Stained Glass and it's interesting. It's very...ambient. Lots of xylophone. Very relaxing. People that didn't like Coyote might like it.

Just listened to Stained Glass. Wow.... so sad when it ended. It creates such a beautiful soundscape that just ebbs and flows so peacefully. The composition is absolutely wonderful as well... Toby occasionally builds up the shimmering tones as if there might be a climax coming but then it naturally falls back into ambiance. It would be easy to call it anticlimactic but it feels so natural and organic and I honestly felt like I could just float around in the music as it carried me wherever it wanted to go.

Calling it ambient is a bit misleading... there is a lot going on all the time and there's constantly new sounds emerging and disappearing. Despite the beauty theres also quite eerie undertones that make it seem as though there's something darker lurking just underneath the sparkling surface. There's a few instances when it feels like the darkness is just about to break the surface and show itself but then sinks back down and dampens out. There's also a couple beautiful bass moments that are really satisfying melodically (which is an element that seems to have been missing from recent Kayo Dot material). I really hope this holds up to future listens, it seems strange to like a Kayo Dot piece so immediately... don't think that's ever happened for me.

Coyote is underrated. If any album is to be considered Kayo Dot's worst it has got to be Blue Lambency Downward.

i can agree with you on that. Coyote really demands a lot of its listener (more than im willing to
give) but it still had some really cool moments. Blue Lambency Downward was just sprawling and
underdeveloped.

Kubrick said a lot of what I was thinking while I was listening to Stained Glass. He describes the EP perfectly. It's very much like a soundscape. It kept me glued to my couch. Even though there wasn't any moment of climax, it was like I couldn't stop listening. It's almost mesmerizing.
